1 GERMAN 101: ELEMENTARY GERMAN I THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL: SPRING 2015 SYLLABUS The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the syllabus: = Unit, theme, and module divisons in Auf geht s! textbook and the Interactive DVD WS = Wortschatz (vocabulary) Cad = Computer printouts (hand in your printout of those IA subunits listed in the syllabus) : = IA (Interactive DVD) & = Lernbuch (textbook) S = Seite (page) = Culture sheets as pdf documents (see Sakai; hand in your printout of those sheets) GE = Grammar explanations as pdf documents (see = Grammar worksheets as pdf documents (see Sakai; hand in your printout of those sheets) Lehrstoff = material Hausaufgaben = homework Mündliche Prüfung = oral exam Organization of Auf geht s! Units in the textbook and on the Interactive DVD (IA) are organized around cultural themes that beginning speakers of German will encounter when they travel to Germany and German-speaking countries or interact with people speaking German. Therefore, our textbook is not a grammar primer. Chapter units are subdivided into four subunits. Although the entire textbook focuses on cultural vocabulary, cultural context, and cultural interactions, it is not possible to learn German successfully without consciously learning about how the language is put together correctly. All along the way, we will reflect on grammar points that are necessary for speaking German accurately in context. Grammar explanations (in the textbook and on the IA) and nightly downloadable grammar homework are highlighted in grey under the homework column. Approach to written homework: Prior to every class, you should first complete the activities on the IA and then those in the textbook. Make sure that you do your homework in the textbook in writing. Your instructor will check your written homework every day prior to or during class time. Once you re finished with the IA and the textbook, turn to the grammar explanations and any other homework for that day. Note: The entry next to each date shows the material (Lehrstoff) to be covered on that day in class and the homework (Hausaufgaben) to be completed before class that day. Grammar: If you wish to look at an alternate website for grammar explanations, we recommend the following website from the German Department at Dartmouth College, NH:
