5 In ENGLISH number refers to the designation of a word as singular or plural. A noun that refers to one person or thing is singular, such as child, book; a noun that refers to more than one person or thing is plural, such as children or books. IN English the plural can be formed in several ways: a. add s, -es, or ies to the noun: books, dishes, cities, b. change the spelling: man men, goose geese c. change nothing: fish fish, deer deer IN GERMAN German has many different ways to form plurals. Look at these examples: Heft Hefte Buch Bücher Kuli Kulis Schultasche Schultaschen Kalender Kalender (same form) Since you cannot predict the plural form of a new noun you learn, you should always memorize the gender and the plural form of German nouns (or look in your Notizbuch). Here are some common ways to form German plural nouns.
