Access code for Premium Website for Neue Horizonte, 8th Edition for additional exercises and learning tools (online) Additional handouts on various aspects of culture as well as grammar and functional expressions. Classes: We meet four times a week: MTRF. Regular attendance is mandatory. More than 3 absences will automatically affect your final grade. Audio program: Regular daily work with the audio program for short periods of time (15-20 minutes) is strongly suggested. You can access the audio material on our Stellar site. You can also download the audio files onto your home computer (or IPad, etc.). Please use a "Lab Timesheet" to keep track of your work with the Lab Manual. It is purely designed to monitor the time you spend listening to the exercises and texts as well as the time you spend recording your own voice. It will not be graded, so please be honest. The "DL- Recorder" as well as the "Audacity sound editor" are free software programs designed to help you to

2 record your own voice. You can then compare your own recording with the recordings from the Lab Manual and Workbook and correct your accent (vowels, umlaut etc.). You will record an assigned dialogue from each chapter and collect these dialogues in your Dropbox folder. Your Dropbox folder will be set up by your instructor and it will track your progress throughout the semester. Homework: Minimum of 8 hours per week. This includes daily practice with the audio program. It is crucial that you work regularly with the audio program in order to practice listening to your own recorded voice in comparison with the voices of the native speakers. The written exercises in the Student Activities Manual (SAM) are to be completed and corrected with the answer keys in another color pen. The SAM will be collected four times during the semester. All homework assignments, including audio files in Dropbox, SAM and compositions, must be handed in ON THE DAY IT IS DUE to be credited towards your grade. All written homework is to be typed: double- spaced with 1- inch margins. Grading: Grades will be determined as follows: In- class participation and homework: four tests: vocabulary quizzes and compositions: There will be no final exam. 40% 30% 30% Enrollment Policy: Enrollment is limited to 18 for pedagogical reasons. Preference will be given to pre- registered students, including pre- registered undergraduates who were cut from the same class the previous semester due to the enrollment cap. Please note that you have to attend the first day of class to maintain your preference level. In case of over- enrollment, preference will be given in the following order: declared majors, declared minors, declared concentrators, pre- registered students of 21F.076J, sophomores, juniors, freshmen, seniors, and graduate students.
