2 Question 1. The Unification of Germany [9 marks] a) On what date did East and West Germany achieve political unification? [1 mark] b) By what date had East and West Germany achieved economic unification? [1 mark] c) Land ownership was a significant barrier to establishing [manufacturing] plants in eastern Germany. ( Why were there so many disputes over land in eastern Germany post-unification? d) Why did most former East German factories close down after Unification took place? e) Name 2 branches of industry in former East Germany that were affected negatively by Unification. Industry in Germany today Write a few sentences, in which you: [6 marks] a) Name three branches of industry in Germany; b) Give an example of a city or region where each of the three industries is based, and c) Give an example of a company (i.e. the name of a company) that manufactures goods in each of the three industry branches. [10 marks] Write a paragraph in English (approximately words) about the do s and don ts of behaviour in a German business environment on the following points: making and keeping appointments guidelines for business dress forms of address in a business context (i.e. what to call someone when you talk to them) getting your point across (communication style) at meetings with German colleagues Page 2 of 6
3 Question 4. Read the text below carefully, and answer the questions in English. Please take note of the footnotes! [30 marks] Haribo I. Haribo ist ein deutscher Süßwarenhersteller mit Sitz im Bonner Stadtteil Kessenich. Gegründet hat ihn 1920 Hans Riegel. Die Unternehmensbezeichnung leitet sich aus den beiden ersten Buchstaben seines Vor- und Nachnamens sowie den ersten beiden Buchstaben des Standortes her (Hans Riegel Bonn). II. III. IV. Neben Haribo gehören auch die Marken Maoam, BärenSchmidt und Dulcia zum Unternehmen. Riegel hat die Firma am 13. Dezember 1920 in Bonn gegründet. Startkapital war nach Firmenangaben ein Sack Zucker. Die erste Fabrikationsstätte befand sich in einem Haus in der Bergstraße. Die Ausrüstung bestand aus einem Kupferkessel, einer Marmorplatte, einem gemauerten 1 Herd und einer Walze 2. Zwei Jahre nach der Firmengründung erfand Hans Riegel den Vorläufer von den Goldbären (damals Tanzbären ) begann Haribo mit der Herstellung von Lakritzprodukten. Anfang der 1930er Jahre entstanden die Vertriebsorganisation in Deutschland und der Hauptbau der neuen Fabrikationsanlage wurde in Kopenhagen zusammen mit den Geschäftspartnern Christian und Eckhof Hansen die Haribo Lakrids A/S Kopenhagen gegründet. V. Während des 2. Weltkrieges ging die Produktion nach Firmenangaben stark zurück, unter anderem wegen Rohstoffknappheit. VI. Nach Hans Riegels frühen Tod im März 1945 führte seine Frau die Firma, denn ihre Söhne waren dann noch in der Kriegsgefangenschaft. Als sie zurückkaman, übernahmen die Söhne die Leitung. 4 repräsentierte die Firma nach außen, während Paul Riegel die Forschung und Produktentwicklung leitete und so gut wie nie in der Öffentlichkeit auftrat. VII wurden die Goldbären in den USA eingeführt. Weitere Markteinführungen, u. a. in Frankreich, Norwegen, Spanien, Finnland und der Türkei, folgten. Heute hat Haribo etwa 6000 Mitarbeitern in fünf Betrieben in Deutschland und in 13 weiteren Betrieben durch ganz Europa. Haribo-Produkte werden in mehr als 100 Ländern vertrieben. Haribo stellt neben seinen bekannten Bären alle Arten von Fruchtgummis, Bonbons und Lakritzeerzeugnissen her. 1. How did the company Haribo get its name? [2 marks] 2.
