1 Deutsch Herbst 2010 Introductory German I MWF 7:30-8:40am Birgit Laramie Comenius C 409 laramieb@moravian.edu Phone: FL Department: Office Hours: Wednesday, 9:00-10:00am Course Description and Objectives German 100 is an introduction and practice of elements of language structures in the classroom through oral and written exercises as well as class participation and homework assignments. Reading, writing, listening and speaking the language will be taught and practiced throughout the course. This course provides students with a sound basis for learning German as it is spoken and written today. Students will have the opportunity to communicate in concrete situations, engage in basic conversations, master the basic features of the sound and writing systems and utilize a basic vocabulary. This course will also cover an introduction to contemporary life and culture in German speaking countries. Required texts for purchase Neue Horizonte. Introductory German, 7. Ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, Neue Horizonte. Introductory German, Student Activities Manual, 7. Ed. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, Additional materials will be provided by the instructor. Course requirements and Grading - grammar/vocabulary quizzes 30% - final exam 15% - group projects - 10% - homework assignments 20% - attendance/ active participation 25% Explanation of assignments: Grammar/Vocabulary Quizzes Vocabulary to be tested includes all assigned word lists from Neue Horizonte, as well as word lists provided by the instructor. Students will be required to use vocabulary in context on the quizzes rather than to translate or define words. Grammar to be tested includes all explanations found in Neue Horizonte and worksheets. Like vocabulary, grammar will also be tested for use in context. Projects The written project will be a two page assignment given at the beginning of the semester. The oral presentation will be a 10 minute group presentation at the end of the semester. Homework Written homework assignments are due at the beginning of the following class period. If you miss class (which you are highly discouraged from doing), it is your responsibility to obtain a copy of the homework assignment from the instructor, or from a classmate. For assignments in the workbook (WB), the procedure is as follows: Complete the assigned exercise(s). Then

2 refer to the answer key sent to you via . Use a pen with a different color and make the appropriate corrections to your work. Class attendance and participation Language-learning requires active class participation at all times! More than two unexcused absences will result in a lowering of your semester grade. Please notify me ahead of time if you know that you have to miss class. Plagiarism and cheating will be handled according to the Student Code outlined in the current Student Handbook and in the statement on Academic Honesty at Moravian College. Students who wish to request accommodations in this class for a disability should contact Mr. Joe Kempfer, Assistant Director of Learning Services for Disability Support, 1307 Main Street (extension 1510).
