Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 1 The Subjunctive (= Der Konjunktiv ) The subjunctive is a so-called "mood of the verb". (FYI: The two other moods of the verb are the "indicative" and the "imperative".) Some examples of the use of the subjunctive in English are: Would you pass me the butter, please? If only I were rich! (Alas, I am not!) If only I had more time! (Alas, I don't.) If I were a rich man/woman, I would... (Alas, I am not, and therefore I can't...) We could go to a concert tonight. He acts as if he were the greatest... (But he really isn't!) He said he would be here at five o'clock. We suggested he better go home soon. In contemporary German, the subjunctive is used for making (polite) requests/commands/suggestions, and expressing realizable wishes unrealizable wishes contrary-to-fact statements hypothetical situations/options als ob (as if)statements reporting of indirect speech/statements when the person relating someone else's statement wants to indicate that he/she doubts the veracity/truthfulness/accuracy of the reported speech/statement reporting of indirect speech/statements when the person relating someone else's statement wants to indicate that he or she is merely reporting what the other person said in a neutral way, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with the reported statement/opinion. (In other words, the uses of the subjunctive in German and English overlap to a certain degree, but there also are differences.) The German subjunctive essentially has two forms: Subjunctive I + Subjunctive II. (Konjunktiv I + Konjunktiv II ) The subjunctive II The subjuncive I is called that because it is derived from the so-called second form/stem of the verb: the simple past (indicative, active voice). is called that because it is derived from the so-called first form of the verb: the infinitive. Form I (infinitiv) Form II (simple past) Form III (past participle) spielen spielte gespielt bringen brachte gebracht haben hatte gehabt werden wurde geworden sein war gewesen gehen ging gegangen schwimmen schwamm geschwommen können konnte gekonnt One key feature of the subjunctive (I+II) is the tell-tale subjunctive e in the ending. The subjunctive endings are: ich...-e wir...-en du...-est ihr...-et Sie...-en Sie...-en er/sie/es...-e sie...-en
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 2 Subjunctive II The Subjunctive II in German comes in two tenses: the Present Tense and the Past Tense. Moreover, the Subjunctive II in German comes in two forms/variations: the formal subjunctive II form of the verb (mainly used in more formal written and oral speech) the so called würde alternative [structurally corresponds to Engl.: would + infinitive] (mainly used in polite requests and conversational/colloquial German, especially when it comes to the present tense subjunctive II of most full/action verbs; however, it is far less common/desirable to use for the würde alternative to the formal subjunctive II present tense of the verbs haben, sein, wissen, wünschen, the modals [and verbs that behave like them]. Also it is not all that desirable in the subjunctive II past tense of most any verb.) Formation of the Formal Subjunctive II Stem 1. Regular Weak verbs: the subjunctive II stem always is completely identical with the simple past stem. Infinitive Infinitive Stem Past Stem (= infinitive stem + t) = Subjunctive II Stem spielen spiel- spielt- spielthören hör- hör- hörtwohnen wohn- wohnt- wohnt- 2. Irregular Weak verbs [Note: this is a complete list]: the subjunctive II stem is based on the past stem, but adds an Umlaut to all simple-past stem vowel that can have one (a>ä, o>ö, u>ü). Infinitive Past Stem (= modified stem + t) Subjunctive II Stem haben hatt- hättbringen bracht- brächtdenken dacht- dächtnennen nannt- nännt- / nenntrennen rannt- rännt- / renntbrennen brannt- brännt-/ brenntkennen kannt- kännt- / kenntwissen wusst- [formerly: wußt-] wüsst- [wüßt-] werden wurd- [weak/strong hybrid: no t ] würd- 3. Strong verbs: the subjunctive II stem is based on the simple past stem, but adds an Umlaut to all simple-past stem vowels that can have an Umlaut (a>ä, o>ö, u>ü). Infinitive Past Stem (= modified stem [no t!!!]) Subjunctive II Stem werden wurd- würdsein war wärbieten bot bötbleiben blieb bliebeinladen lud ein lüd- ein fahren fuhr führschreiben schrieb schrieb-
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 3 4. Modals [Note: this is a complete list]: the subjunctive II stem is based on the simple past stem, but adds an Umlaut to the simple-past stem vowel (a>ä, o>ö, u>ü) of those modals that have an Umlaut in the infinitive. Infinitive Past Stem (Note: no Umlaut ever!!!) Subjunctive II Stem dürfen durft- dürftkönnen konnt- könntmögen mocht- möchtmüssen musst- [formerly: mußt-] müsst- [formerly: müßt-] but: sollen sollt solltwollen wollt- wollt- Result of 1-4: In some cases, --the subjunctive II stem is completely identical with the past indicative stem; --the stem vowel takes an "Umlaut" in the subjunctive II present tense. Subjunctive II: Present Tense Formation: subjunctive II stem + subjunctive endings of the (see above) ich...-e wir -e n Formal du...-est ihr -e t Subjunctive II Sie...-en Sie -en Present Tense er...-e sie...-en sie...-e sie...-en es...-e sie...-en (Note: The subjunctive endings are identical with the indicative simple past endings of weak and irregular verbs.) 1. Regular Weak verbs: (machen) ich machte wir machten (would make/do) du machtest ihr machtet Sie machten Sie machten er/sie/es machte sie machten (hören) ich hörte wir hörten (would hear) du hörtest ihr hörtet Sie hörten Sie hörten er/sie/es hörte sie hörten (besuchen) ich besuchte wir besuchten (would visit) du besuchtest ihr besuchtet Sie besuchten Sie besuchten er/sie/es besuchte sie besuchten (Result: The subjunctive II present tense of regular weak verbs is thus completely identicalwith the past tense of these verbs. Don't fret, context usually makes it crystal clear what's what!)
The subjunctive II present tense of irregular weak verbs differs from the indicative simple past by way of the Umlaut. Rule: if the stem can have an Umlaut, it will! Also, for rennen + kennen +nennen ä and e. are interchangable.) 3. The subjunctive II present tense of strong verbs differs from the indicative simple past by way of some of the endings, as well as the Umlaut that is added to all stem vowels that can have one.)
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 5 4. Modals: (mögen) ich möchte wir möchten (would like) du möchtest ihr möchtet Sie möchten Sie möchten er/sie/es möchte sie möchten (können) ich könnte wir könnten (would like) du könntest ihr könntet Sie könnten Sie könnten er/sie/es könnte sie könnten (dürfen) ich dürfte wir dürften (would be allowed to) du dürftest ihr dürftet Sie dürften Sie dürften er/sie/es dürfte sie dürften (müssen) ich müsste wir müssten (would have to) du müsstest ihr müsstet Sie müssten Sie müssten er/sie/es müsste sie müssten (wollen) ich wollte wir wollten (would want to) du wolltest ihr wolltet Sie wollten Sie wollten er/sie/es wollte sie wollten (sollen) ich sollte wir sollten (should / ought to) du solltest ihr solltet Sie sollten Sie sollten er/sie/es sollte sie sollten (Result: The subjunctive II present tense of model differs from the indicative simple past only if the infinitive of the modal has an Umlaut; then the modal takes an Umlaut in the subjunctive II present tense.) Formation: subjunctive II of the so-called present tense würde alternative form of werden + infinitive to the formal Subjunctive II ich würde gehen Present Tense du würdest schlafen (mostly used in Sie würden es mögen conversational-type/ er/sie/es würde nach Europa fliegen wollen more colloquial/ wir würden essen everyday German) ihr würdet Musik hören Sie würden lesen sie würden mehr Deutsch sprechen
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 6 Uses: 1. Polite requests: Würden Sie die Tür zumachen, bitte? [[Machten Sie die Tür zu, bitte?]] (Would you close the door, please?) Bitte, dürfte ich mal kurz stören? (Might I interrupt/bother you for a moment, please?) [[Bitte, würde ich mal kurz stören dürfen?]] Könntest du mir, bitte, helfen? [[Würdest du mir, bitte, helfen können.]] (Could you help me, please?) Note: in the case of polite requests in the subjunctive II, the würde - alternative is much preferred, except when it comes to requests involving modals; then the subjunctive II present tense form proper is both much more common/usual and much more desirable. 2. Unrealizable wishes: Wenn + grammatical subject + nur + + conjugated verb in the formal subjunctive II. Wenn er nur Deutsch spräche. (If only he spoke/would speak German.) Wenn ich jetzt nur Musik hören könnte. (If only I could listen to music now.) Ich wünschte (nur) + coordinated / subordinate clause in the subjunctive II. Ich wünschte nur, er spräche Deutsch. (I only wish he spoke / would speak German.) Ich wünschte nur, dass er Deutsch spräche. (I only wish that he spoke / would speak German.) Watch out for the position of the conjugated verb in the above structure! Coordinated main clause: conjugated verb in 2nd position; Subordinate/dependent clause: conjugated verb at the very end. And now with the so-called "würde alternative" (mostly in the spoken/conversational German): Wenn er nur Deutsch sprechen würde. (If only he would speak German.) Wenn ich jetzt nur Musik hören könnte. (If only I could listen to music now.) [Unusual, but possible: Wenn ich jetzt nur Musik würde hören können. ] Ich wünschte nur, er würde Deutsch sprechen. (I only wish he would speak German.) Ich wünschte nur, dass er Deutsch sprechen würde. (I only wish that he would speak German.)
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 7 Ich wünschte nur, er würde öfter Deutsch sprechen können. (colloquial / almost odd) (I only wish he could / would be able to speak German more often.) [Highly unusual, but possible: Ich wünschte nur, dass er öfter Deutsch würde sprechen können. (I only wish that he could / would be able to speak German more often.) Note/Important: in all bracketted, i.e. "unusual" examples above and below, watch out for the position of the conjugated verb and the double infinitives. Note especially: conjugated verb at the very end before the double infinitive structure at the very, very end of the subordinate/dependent clause!!! For the very reason of this difficult word order rule -- many linguistically less educated native speakers are clueless about it -- the formal subjunctive II / the subjunctive II proper --rather than the würde alternative -- tends to be preferred in subordinate clauses/structures involving modals and other verbs taking a straight infinitive without zu )!!!] 3. Contrary-to-fact conditional sentences: Wenn ich ein reicher Mann wäre, (dann/so) würde ich nicht arbeiten. (oral/conversational) Wenn ich ein reicher Mann wäre, (dann/so) arbeitete ich nicht. (written/formal) (If I were a rich man, then I would not work.) Wenn ich eine reiche Frau wäre, (dann/so) müsste ich nicht arbeiten. (written/formal/oral/conversational) (If I were a rich woman, then I would not have to work.) Wenn ich eine reiche Frau wäre, dann würde ich nicht arbeiten müssen. (very colloquial; almost odd) Wenn er so gut wie Pavarotti singen könnte, (dann/so) wäre er weltberühmt. [Wenn er so gut wie Pavarotti würde singen können, dann wäre er weltberühmt.] [[Note: It is theoretically possible, but stylistically inferior / not at all desirable to sport the würde-alternative in the wenn clause in German. Note: this holds doubly true when the "full" / meaning carrying verb is sein or haben. -Wenn ich ein reicher Mann sein würde, dann würde ich nicht arbeiten. (If I would be a rich man, then I would not work.) -Wenn ich eine reiche Frau sein würde, (dann) würde ich nicht arbeiten müssen. (If I would be a rich woman, then I would not have to work. [-Wenn er so gut wie Pavarotte würde singen können, dann würde er weltberühmt sein.] ]]
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 8 Note/Important: changes of word order are necessary, if the "wenn" is dropped, if the main clause and the subordinate clause appear in a different order/sequence (i.e. if the main clause precedes the subordinate clause) or if one asks a question: Wäre ich reich, (so/dann) würde ich nicht arbeiten. (Were I rich, I would not work.) Wäre ich reich, (so/dann)arbeitete ich nicht. (Were I rich, I would not work.) [[Würde ich reich sein, (so/dann) würde ich nicht arbeiten.]] Wäre ich reich, (so/dann)müsste ich nicht arbeiten. (Were I rich, I would not have to work.) [[Würde ich reich sein, (so) würde ich nicht arbeiten müssen.]] Ich würde nicht arbeiten, wenn ich reich wäre. Ich arbeitete nicht, wenn ich reich wäre. Würdest du arbeiten, wenn du reich wärest? Arbeitest du, wenn du reich wärest? (I would not work if I were rich.) (Would you work if you were rich?) Müsstest du arbeiten, wenn du reich wärest? [Würdest du arbeiten müssen, wenn du reich wärest?] (Would you have to work if you you were rich?) 4. Hypothetical statements / options: (Kontext: Wenn ich nur zu Hause wäre!) Dann könnte ich Musik hören. (Then I could listen to music.) Dann würde ich Musik hören können. (Kontext: Wenn ich nur mehr Zeit hätte!) Dann lernte ich besser Deutsch sprechen. (formal/written) Dann würde ich besser Deutsch sprechen lernen. (conversational/oral) (Then I would learn to speak German better.) (Kontext/Frage:,,Was sollen wir heute Abend unternehmen?") Wir könnten heute Abend ins Kino gehen. (We could go to the movies this evening.) Ich möchte heute Abend ins Kino gehen. (I would like to go to the movies tonight.) Wie wäre es damit, wenn wir heute Abend ins Kino gingen? (more formal) Wie wär's, wenn wir heute Abend ins Kino gehen würden? (rather conversational) (How about going to the movies tonight?)
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 9 5. "Als ob" statements: Er tut, als ob er der beste Fußballspieler der Welt wäre. (He acts as if he were/was the best soccer player in the world.) Du tust, als ob du viel Geld hättest. [[Du tust, als ob du viel Geld haben würdest.]] Wir tun, als ob wir singen könnten. [Wir tun, als ob wir würden singen können.] Ich tu', als ob ich singen würde. Ich tue, als ob ich sänge. (conversational/colloquial/oral) (formal/written) NOTE: als ob introduces subordinate/dependent clauses!!! Therefore, it requires subordinate/dependent-clause word order. Watch the position of the conjugated verb!!! 6. In contemparary standard German, the formal Subjunctive II is also used in more formaltype written and oral texts when reporting someone else's statements and wanting to make clear that one does not agree with the statement one is reporting. In other words, it is used when the "reporter" wants to make clear that he/she is not merely reporting neutrally what someone else said/wrote, but rather that he/she has serious issues with the varacity/accuracy of what the other person(s) said/wrote. Herr H. sagte, er läse gern. (Aber das stimmt nicht!) Sie dachte, die Hubers hätten viel Geld. (Aber das stimmt nicht!) Er sagte, der Zug käme um Uhr an. (Aber das stimmt nicht!) [Note: The würde alternative really does not apply to this particular use of the subjunctive II present tense as it seems reserved for quoting direct speech that is already in the subjunctive mood.]
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 10 Subjunctive II: Past Tense While the indicative mood has three tenses to express the past (present perfect, past, past perfect), the subjunctive has only one. Formation: 1. Full Verbs and Modals without an Additional Verb/Infinitive of formal Subjunctive II Subjunctive II present tense form of Past Tense haben + past participle oder sein + past participle ich hätte gehabt du hättest gelernt Sie hätten geschlafen er,sie,es hätte geschrieben wir hätten gesehen ihr hättet euch vorgestellt Sie hätten eingekauft sie hätten geschlafen ich wäre gewesen du wärest gerannt Sie wären angekommen er,sie,es wäre gegangen wir wären gelaufen ihr wäret gekommen Sie wären gelaufen sie wären eingeschlafen (Remember: All verbs of motion with direction and without a direct object, as well as verbs that express an existential state of being or change from one existential state of being into an other one, construct any compound past tense with the appropriate conjugated forms of sein. That includes the formal subjunctive II past tense, as well as the present perfect indicative and the past perfect indicative. All other verbs, and that includes the modals, use the appropriate conjugated forms of haben as "auxiliary" for the formation of these compound past tenses.
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 11 Formation (unlike the würde alternative in the subjunctive II present tense, of the so-called this past form of the würde alternative is used würde alternative relatively rarely, because it is rather problematic/cumbersome for the with regard to word order, especially when it comes to subordinate Subjunctive II clause word order and/or modals. Past Tense 1. Full Verbs and Modals without an Additional Verb/Infinitive Subjunctive II present tense form of werden + past infinitive (= past participle + haben/sein) ich würde gelernt haben du würdest gespielt haben Sie würden geschlafen haben er,sie,es hätte geschrieben wir würden gesehen habe ihr würdet euch vorgestellt haben Sie würden eingekauft haben sie würden geschlafen haben ich würde gerannt sein du würdest gewesen sein Sie würden angekommen sein er,sie,es wäre gegangen sein wir würden gelaufen sein ihr würdet gekommen sein Sie würden tanzen gegangen sein sie würden eingeschlafen sein ich würde es gesollt haben du würdest es gemusst haben Sie würden es gekonnt haben es/sie/es würde es gemocht haben wir würden es gesollt haben ihr würdet es gedurft haben Sie würden es gekonnt haben sie würden es gewollt haben (Remember: All verbs of motion with direction and without a direct object, as well as verbs that express an existential state of being or change from one existential state of being into an other one, construct the compound past tenses, as well as the compound past infinitive with sein. The other verbs, and that includes the modals, use the appropriate forms of haben as "auxiliary" for the formation of the compound past tense forms. ) 2. Modals with an Additional Verb/Infinitive Subjunctive II present tense form of werden + tripple or quadruple infinitive (= first haben, then the infinitive(s) of the full verb, then the infinitive of the modal) ich würde haben schlafen sollen du würdest haben schreiben müssen Sie würden haben schwimmen gehen können er/sie/es würde etwas haben essen mögen wir würden haben rennen sollen ihr würdet haben anrufen dürfen Sie würden haben tanzen gehen können sie würden etwas haben trinken wollen
Beate T. Engel-Doyle (Version vom März 2009) 12 Uses: [The würde alternative for the past subjunctive II is far too / extremely cumbersome to use!!! This goes especially for structures involving modals with an additional verb/infinitives.] 1. Unrealizable wishes in the past Wenn ich damals nur schon besser Deutsch gesprochen hätte! [Wenn ich damals nur schon besser Deutsch gesprochen haben würde.] Wenn ich nur schon besser Deutsch hätte sprechen können. [Wenn ich nur schon besser Deutsch würde haben sprechen können.] 2. Hypothetical statements in the past (Context: Wenn du in New York gewesen wärest!) Dann hättest du die Freiheitsstatue gesehen. [Dann würdest du die Freiheitsstatue gesehen haben.} Dann hättest du die Freiheitsstatue sehen können. [Dann würdest du die Freiheitsstatue haben sehen können.] 3. Contrary-to-fact sentences in the past Wenn Sie in New York gewesen wären, hätten Sie eine Broadway Show sehen können. [Wenn Sie in New York gewesen sein würden, würden Sie eine Broadway Show haben sehen können.] Wärest du gekommen, wenn ich dich eingeladen hätte? [Würdest du gekommen sein, wenn ich dich eingeladen haben würde.] 4. "als-ob" statements (as if) Er tat, als ob er der beste Fußballspieler der Welt gewesen wäre. [[Er tat, als ob er der beste Fußballspieler der Welt gewesen sein würde.]] 5. In contemparary standard German, the formal Subjunctive II past tense is also used in more formal-type written and oral texts when reporting someone else's statements about the past and wanting to make clear that one does not agree with the statement one is reporting. In other words, it is used when the "reporter" wants to make clear that he/she is not merely reporting neutrally what someone else said/wrote, but rather that he/she has serious issues with / doubts about the varacity/accuracy of what the other person(s) said/wrote. Er sagte, er wäre um Uhr nach Hause gekommen. (Aber das stimmt nicht! Er ist erst um Mitternacht nach Hause gekommen.) Sie sagte, sie hätte nicht viel eingekauft. (Aber das stimmt nicht! Sie hat ein ganzes Auto voll von Dingen gekauft.) [Note: The würde alternative does not apply to this last use of the past subjunctive II.]
