2 i/m/l/f Religion and Freedom of the Press in Conflict INTRODUCTION The Islam-critical cartoons about Prophet Muhammad that were published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten in 2005 (and many more that followed) created an outcry. The protests by Muslims resulting in more than 200 reported deaths made the conflict of freedom of religion and the freedom of the media subject to a worldwide debate that is still ongoing. However, the Muhammad controversy is part of a much bigger issue that the conference will address. It is about balancing the interest of the believers, the rights of the press that invoke freedom of speech, and the state s desire to contain religious conflict. The conference will address the highly relevant question of how to get the balance right in this triangle by looking at U.S., German and European law.

5 panelists Professor Marci A. Hamilton, M.A., J.D. (UPenn) holds the Paul R. Verkuil Chair in Public Law at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. She is one of the United States leading church/ state experts and specializes on the issue of whether religious practices that violate the law should be accommodated. She holds two master s degrees, one in philosophy (1982) and one in English (1984), from Penn State and a law degree (1988) from UPenn. A former law clerk for Justice Sandra Day O Connor at the US Supreme Court, she is the author of God vs. the Gavel: Religion and the Rule of Law (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2005), Fundamentalism, Politics, and the Law (Palgrave, 2011), and Justice Denied: What America Must Do to Protect Its Children (Cambridge Univ. Press, rev. 2012). She is a columnist of The Huffington Post on church/state issues and regularly appears on national TV, including The Today Show, Anderson Cooper, and Good Morning America.

6 panelists Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Dieter Grimm, LL.M. (Harvard) is a Professor of Law at Humboldt University of Berlin and a Visiting Professor of Law at Yale Law School. He is also a Permanent Fellow and former Director of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. From 1987 until 1999, he served as a Justice on the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany. An honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he holds law degrees from the University of Frankfurt (Dr. iur and Habilitation 1979) and a Master of Laws from Harvard (1965). He has published i.a. Conflicts Between General Laws and Religious Norms (Cardozo Law Rev. 30 [2009], ) and Nach dem Karikaturenstreit: Brauchen wir eine neue Balance zwischen Pressefreiheit und Religionsschutz? (Juristische Studiengesellschaft Karlsruhe, Jahresband 2007, S ).

(Harvard) is since 2004 a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg and has concluded his Habilitation at the University of Hamburg in He attended law school in Marburg (Dr. iur. 2003), as well as the London School of Economics and Harvard University (LL.M. 2004). Before being an interim professor at the University of Freiburg, he now holds an interim professorship at the University of Bonn. Rösler has an extensive list of publications to his credit (e.g. Caricatures and Satires in Art Law: The German Approach in Comparison with the U.S., England and the Human Rights Convention, European Human Rights Law Review 2008, ). He has founded the IMLF in 2008 together with Daniel Biene.
