2nd Year German Study Notes Adjectives have three forms: positive, comparatives, and superlatives. This book is big. That book is bigger. The atlas is the biggest. A quarter is small. A nickel is smaller. A penny is the smallest. Johann ist groß. Fritz ist größer. Otto ist am größten. Ulla ist alt. Jutta ist älter. Inge ist am ältesten. To inflect an adjective into its comparative form, we usually umlaut the vowel, and add an er suffix; if there are two or more vowels in the adjective, the umlaut will occur to the one closest to the end. If two vowels are immediately next to each other, then the first one will take the umlaut. A few rare exceptions will become comparatives without any umlaut. Remember that only the vowels a, o, and u can take umlaut. alt älter groß größer klein kleiner jung jünger neu neuer breit breiter To make a superlative, we add the umlaut if possible, and the suffix este or ste. In rare cases, the suffix te will be used, usually if the adjective already ends with s or ß. alt älteste größ größte klein kleinste jung jüngste neu neuste breit breiteste Superlatives are often used in the idiomatic construction which corresponds to the English he is the oldest or she is the smartest and in such cases, the superlative is preceded by am and the suffix n is used: Er ist am ältesten. Sie ist am größten. Sie ist am klügsten. Er ist am kleinsten. Some adjectives are irregular: Das Buch ist gut. Das Buch ist besser. Das Buch ist am besten. Ich trinke viel. Ich trinke mehr. Ich trinke am meisten. Ich mache das gern. Du machst das lieber. Er macht es am liebsten. DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 1
For those of you who want to get technical, yes, the above examples might be seen as adverbs instead of adjectives. But the basic idea is still the same. The adverb gern is the usual way to express that you like to do something: Ich esse gern Pizza. Er spielt gern Fußball. Wir lesen gern Comic-Hefte. To express that you would rather do one thing than another, the adverb lieber is used: Ich esse lieber Wurst. Er spielt lieber Tischtennis. Wir lesen lieber Zeitungen. To say that a certain activity is your most favorite, use the adverbial phrase am liebsten: Ich esse am liebsten Käse. Er spielt am liebsten Schach. Wir lesen am liebsten einen Roman. Reflexive verbs, in German and in English, add a second pronoun, in order to indicate that the subject is doing the action for or to itself: I m going to buy myself a new car. He sees himself in the mirror. She loves herself! She hates herself! Ich kaufe mir eine neue CD. Er sieht sich im Spiegel. In German, there are two types of reflexives: accusative and dative. Accusative reflexives are used when the reflexive pronoun is the direct object. Dative reflexives are used when the reflexive pronoun is the indirect object. Often, DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 2
German reflexives don t make sense to English speakers. For example, in German, reflexive constructions are often used in order to avoid placing a possessive in front of a body part: Ich wasche mir die Hände. = I wash my hands. = I wash the hand to myself. Ich putze mir die Zähne. = I brush my teeth. = I brush the teeth to myself. It will take a lot of thinking and studying to understand how the German language uses reflexive constructions. Any noun or pronoun will transform into the accusative case when it is used as a direct object. A direct object is the word or phrase in the sentence that gets something done to do it the subject of the sentence does something to the direct object: Der Käse ist gelb. Ich esse den Käse. Der Bleistift liegt auf dem Tisch. Ich kaufe den Bleistift. Ich wohne in Ann Arbor. Mein Vater liebt mich. Wir spielen in der Mannschaft. Die Leute in dem Stadion sehen uns. Nouns and pronouns change into the dative case when they are used as indirect objects: Mein Vater hat Geburtstag. Ich gebe meinem Vater ein Geschenk. Mein Freund wohnt in Köln. Ich schreibe meinem Freund einen Brief. Er verkauft die CD. Ich gebe ihm das Geld. Ich bekomme einen Brief. Otto hat mir den Brief geschrieben. In addition to being used for direct and indirect objects, the accusative case and the dative case are also used with different groups of prepositions. There are four types of preposition: those which always take the accusative, those which always take the dative, those which always take the genitive, and the those which vary between accusative and dative. One of the verb forms we use to talk about the past is called the preterit it is also sometimes called the narrative past or the imperfect or sometimes simply DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 3
the past all different names for the same thing! It is different than the perfect form, which we also use to talk about the past: Preterit: Perfect: Preterit: Perfect: Preterit: Perfect: Preterit: Perfect: I ate a hamburger. I have eaten a hamburger. We wrote a letter. We have written a letter. Ich aß eine Wurst. Ich habe eine Wurst gegessen. Wir spielten Fußball. Wir haben Fußball gespielt. To form the preterit of a regular verb, like spielen, simply add the appropriate suffixes: ich spielte du spieltest er spielte wir spielten ihr spieltet sie spielten Note that the preterit of a regular verb is very similar to the present tense; you will need to watch very carefully to tell the difference. An irregular verb, like trinken, will often change the vowel in the preterit, and use a slightly different set of suffixes: ich trank du trankst er trankt wir tranken ihr trankt sie tranken The modal verbs müssen, können, sollen, wollen, dürfen, etc. have their own preterit forms: ich durfte du durftest er durfte wir durften ihr durftet sie durften DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 4
There are several ways to turn verbs into nouns; these can be called gerunds and the first way to form them is to simply capitalize the infinitive form of the verb and treat it as a neuter noun: Er spielt Fußball. Das Spielen macht Spaß! Sie tanzt gern. Ich finde das Tanzen gut. Wir singen zusammen. Das Singen ist laut. These forms are often used with prepositions: Beim Spielen braucht man einen Ball. Beim Lesen kann man auch trinken. Zum Kochen brauche ich einen Ofen. Zum Tanzen brauche ich Musik. The genitive case has two uses: to show possession or with certain prepositions. Das Auto meines Vaters ist blau. Die Mannschaft unserer Schule gewinnt oft! Die Nase des Hundes ist naß. Note the word order: My dad s car = the car of my dad Our school s team = the team of our school The dog s nose = the nose of the dog Certain prepositions will govern the genitive case; that means that the nouns coming after these prepositions will be in the genitive form. Wegen des Wetters gibt es kein Tennisspiel heute. Trotz des Preises kaufe ich die CD. Während des Filmes schläft er. Other preposition taking the genitive are: anstatt, statt, innerhalb, außerhalb, oberhalb, unterhalb, behufs, anläßlich, jenseits, diesseits. DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 5
The word dies-, welch-, solch-, manch-, jed-, and jen- will take endings to agree with case, number, and gender: Dieses Auto ist kaputt! Dieser Computer ist neu. Mit diesem Computer kann ich gut arbeiten. Welche Mannschaft gewinnt? In welcher Mannschaft spielst du? Jeden Tag gehe ich in die Schule. Jede Stunde schreibt der Lehrer eine Liste auf. The definite article can be used without the noun. If no nouns stands after the definite article, it can be a pronoun ( he, she, it, they, them ), or it can be a demonstrative pronoun ( this one, that one, these, those ): Hier gibt es viele CDs. Die hier gefällt mir. Ich mag den Film. Den finde ich echt gut. Wo ist Otto? Der kommt gleich. Die Leute sind nett. Mit denen spiele ich oft Schach. Meine Eltern haben Geburtstag. Ich gebe denen ein neues Buch. When forming questions, most prepositions can be combined with the prefixes woor wor- to form interogratives ( question words ) to begin the sentences: worin = in what? wofür = for what? worauf = on top of what? woraus = out of what? Womit hat er den Ball geschlagen? Worüber habt ihr gesprochen? The English who and whom are rendered as wer, wen, and wem in German; whose is wessen. The accusative direct object is wen, and the dative indirect object is wem; the prepositions will also use wen and wem. DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 6
Wer hat den Film gesehen? Wen hast du im Kino gesehen? Wer hat dir das Geld gegeben? Wem hast du meine CD gegeben? Wem hast du einen Brief geschrieben? Wen liebst du? Wer liebt dich? Mit wem hast du Schach gespielt? Ohne wen habt ihr Karten gespielt? Neben wem saß er im Stadion? Für wen ist dieses Geschenk? When an adjective precedes a noun, it will take endings. The endings on the adjective agree with the noun in case, number, and gender. The endings will also vary, depending on whether a definite article, an indefinite article, or no article precedes the adjective: Der alte Mann hat ein neues Buch. Ein alter Mann hat das neue Buch. In dem neuen Buch gibt es ein schönes Bild. In dem schönen Bild steht eine schöne Blume. Heißer Kaffee ist schwarz. Der heiße Kaffee ist schwarz. Ein heißer Kaffee ist schwarz. Note also that the endings on adjectives will vary and be determined by whether they follow a possessive (my, your, his, her, our, their = mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, etc.), and whether they follow a demonstrative (this, that, which, every = dieser, jener, welcher, jeder, etc.). Adjectives can be used as nouns. When this happens, they will retain the ending they would have as if they were followed by the implied but unstated noun: Ich mag das rote Auto. = Ich mag das Rote. Er trinkt den weißen Wein. = Er trinkt den Weißen. Sie spielt Karten mit dem alten Mann. = Sie spielt mit dem Alten. DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 7
Adjectives after the words nichts, etwas, and viel will usually take the ending es: Ich sehe nichts Neues. Er hat nichts Wertvolles. Hast du etwas Gutes gekauft? Meine Mutter hat etwas Leckeres für mich! Ich habe viel Schlechtes erlebt. Der Laden hat viel Schönes. There are a number of quantity words such as viele, wenige, einige, andere, ein paar and all numbers (zwei, drei...). If these quantity words are followed by adjectives, then the adjective endings are the same as if they followed a form of the demonstrative dieser: Ich habe viele schöne Briefmarken. Er hat sechs neue CDs. Bring mir ein paar neue Zeitschriften! Pronouns following (or otherwise associated with) prepositions can be reduced to the prefix da which is then attached to the preposition. If the preposition begins with a vowel, then the prefix is changed to dar Er spielt mit dem Schläger. = Er spielt damit. Wir sprechen über das Ding. = Wir sprechen darüber. Sie fährt schnell durch den Tunnel. = Sie fährt schnell dadurch. Ich schlafe in dem Zimmer. = Ich schlafe darin. The plusquamperfekt (or pluperfect ) mirrors the English version of the same form, in which the auxiliary verb is put into the preterit instead of the present. Study the examples: DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 8
I had eaten the bread. I have eaten the bread. I ate the bread. I eat the bread. He had played soccer. He has played soccer. He played soccer. He plays soccer. Ich hatte das Brot gegessen. Ich habe das Brot gegessen. Ich aß das Brot. Ich esse das Brot. Er hatte Fußball gespielt. Er hat Fußball gespielt. Er spielte Fußball. Er spielt Fußball. The suffix hin indicates motion away from location of the writer; the suffix her indicates motion toward the writer: Wohin gehst du? Woher kommst du? Where are you going? From where are you arriving? Mein Onkel wohnt in Berlin. Meine Tante wohnt auch dort. Gestern sind sie dorther gekommen. Morgen fahren sie dorthin. Meine Oma wohnt in Leipzig. Mein Opa wohnt auch da. Gestern kamen sie daher. Morgen fahren sie wieder dahin. Some verbs take a direct object in the dative; normally, direct objects are accusative, but these verbs are exceptions. Er hilft mir, und ich helfe ihm. He helps me, and I help him. Die neue Musik gefällt mir. Gefällt sie dir? The new music pleases me. Does it please you? Conjunctions join two clauses to form a complex sentence; subordinating conjunctions move the verb to the end of the clause that immediately follows them. Coordinating conjunctions leave the word order in the two clauses in its normal DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 9
form: Subordinating: Ich habe keine Zeit, weil ich kein Geld habe. Weil ich kein Geld habe, habe ich keine Zeit. Coordinating: Ich habe keine Zeit, und ich habe keine Geld. Common subordinating conjunctions include: als, ehe, bis, damit, daß, ob, obwohl, obgleich, weil. Common coordinating conjunctions include: aber, oder, und, sondern. DA2 Grammar Notes Seite 10
