Document A Der Duft der Technik Wie Universitäten Schülerinnen für Naturwissenschaften begeistern wollen A B C Am Schwarzen Brett vor Hörsaal T3.02 der Universität Essen findet man viele politisch korrekte Endungen: IT-Spezialist/in gesucht, Mathematikstudent/in, Mitarbeiter/in in der Softwareentwicklung. Aber die garantierte Chancengleichheit gibt es nur auf dem Papier. Denn nur wenige Schülerinnen interessieren sich für ein Studium in Naturwissenschaften und Technik. Deshalb hat die Universität entschieden, ein wenig nachzuhelfen: Heute findet eine Vorlesung nur für Frauen statt. Männer müssen draußen bleiben. Der Anteil der Studentinnen in naturwissenschaftlichen und technischen Fächern an deutschen Hochschulen liegt bei etwa 15 Prozent. Mit Sommeruniversitäten für Frauen möchten deshalb Universitäten in Essen, Wuppertal, Bremen oder Berlin Oberstufenschülerinnen beweisen, dass naturwissenschaftliche und technische Studiengänge interessant sind. Die Studentenzahlen in Fächern wie Chemie, Mathematik oder Physik steigen zwar seit Mitte der neunziger Jahre wieder an aber nicht schnell genug. Da ist Werbung unbedingt notwendig, vor allem bei jungen Frauen. Die sind oft noch technikfern sozialisiert und glauben deshalb nicht, dass sie in einem Fach wie Physik bestehen können. Wenn sie das überhaupt versuchen wollen: Vielen erscheinen naturwissenschaftliche und technische Fächer sowieso uninteressant: zu abstrakt, zu trocken, zu wenig lebensnah. Berufsziel Managerin, das verspricht eine gute Karriere. Maschinenbaustudium dagegen klingt für viele noch immer nach Fabrikhalle und schweren Maschinen CONTINUED

3 GERMAN SYLLABUS C LANG0G03 and LANG1G13 Page 2 D E F In Essen besuchen die Schülerinnen während der Sommerferien eine Woche lang Vorlesungen und Praktika in klassischen Männerfächern wie Physik, Informatik und Maschinenbau, die auf ihr Vorwissen zugeschnitten sind. Dabei sollen sie vor allem einen Einblick in die Wissenschaft, aber auch in den Uni-Alltag allgemein bekommen. Die Hochschule hält diese so genannte Schnupperwoche für Frauen für so sinnvoll, dass sie sie bereits zum vierten Mal organisiert. Die Themenpalette ist vielfältig: Im Fachbereich Mathematik wird ein logistisches Problem behandelt, im Fachbereich Chemie analysieren die Schnupperstudentinnen ein Duftöl und in der Abteilung Maschinenwesen erfahren sie, warum es ohne Klimatechnik keine CDs und keine Computerchips geben würde. Die Schülerinnen, die an diesem Nachmittag im Hörsaal sitzen, haben sich für eine Veranstaltung mit dem Titel Entwerfen mit Computerprogrammen entschieden. Von Fachvokabular haben sie sich nicht abschrecken lassen. Solchen Kontakt mit der Praxis hat sich Kristin Steinicke von der Sommeruniversität gewünscht. Die 19-Jährige mit der Meg-Ryan-Frisur und dem rosa Trägertop hat sich schon für ihr zukünftiges Studienfach entschieden: Theater- und Veranstaltungstechnik an der Technischen Fachhochschule Berlin. Absolventen dieses Studiengangs sind später z.b. für die technische Seite des Bühnenbilds verantwortlich. In Kristins Wunschstudium gibt es viel Technik, besonders in den ersten Semestern. Was sie an dem Fach fasziniert, ist die Kombination von Kunst, Technik und Organisation G Der Studiengang ist eines der so genannten Bindestrich-Fächer. Diese interdisziplinären Studiengänge wie Medien-Informatik oder Umwelt-Technik sind bei Frauen wegen des gesellschaftlichen Bezuges beliebter. Vielleicht hat sich Kristin Steinicke auch für Theater- und Veranstaltungstechnik entschieden, weil ihr Vater Baumaschinist ist. Studien zeigen, dass Familienmitglieder Einflussfaktoren dafür sein können, dass sich ein Mädchen für ein technisches Studienfach entscheidet. Aber Kristin hat schon jetzt von der Diskussion um Frauen und Technik genug: Ich habe mir mein Fach nach meinen Neigungen ausgesucht, nicht nach meinem Geschlecht. Nur fünf Frauen waren beim Tag der offenen Tür der TFH Berlin unter den etwa 60 Interessenten für ihr zukünftiges Studienfach. Ich bin stolz darauf, dass ich eine von ihnen war H I Die 22-jährige Andrea Kahlen, die bei der Sommeruniversität Essen als Tutorin mitarbeitet, sieht die niedrige Frauenquote nicht so optimistisch. Sie studiert seit vier Semestern Physik. Ein klar gegliedertes Studium, solide Forschungsergebnisse: Das waren die Kriterien, nach denen sie ihr Fach auswählte - das Resultat ist ein Studium allein unter Männern. Was es tatsächlich heißt, täglich eine Ausnahme zu sein, werden die Schülerinnen erst im Studium wissen. Generell jedoch sind Schnupperwochen wohl eine gute Orientierungshilfe zwei Drittel der Teilnehmerinnen in Essen sagten in den vergangenen Jahren, dass die Sommeruniversität ihre Studienwahl beeinflusst hat. Ich habe jetzt einen ersten Eindruck, wie Uni-Veranstaltungen in technischen Fächern ablaufen, sagt Kristin. Die meisten Besucher von Schnupper-Sommerkursen finden, dass diese eine gute (6) bei der Wahl des Studiums sind.
