PIA FRIES Pia Fries work is known for its dramatic impasto and sculpted surfaces that bristle with vibrant colors. She applies pigment often directly from the tube with brushes, rollers, presses, palette knifes and other instruments. The paint appears saturated, glossy and luscious, in rich, colorful masses as well as other layers that are thin and fluid. Much like an archaeologist, she also scrapes, cuts or scratches off areas of the thick surface to reveal the layers of paint beneath. The negative space designated by the white or unfinished areas of the panel or paper provides a compliment to the painted areas and acts as a structural element in its own right. Ultimately Fries interest lies in the movement in the picture, the process, and the energies that emerge. Pia Fries lives and works in Dusseldorf and Berlin, Germany. She is an MA student of Gerhard Richter, having attended his painting classes at the Kunstakademie Dusserldorf from 1980 to 1986. Fries has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, Germany (2010-2011) and Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Winterthur, Switzerland (2007). Her work has been included in group exhibitions, The Doubled Image at Kunstmuseum Solothurn, Switzerland (2013), Landscape Confection at Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, OH (2005), Beau Monde the SITE Santa Fe Biennial curated by Dave Hickey (2001), and Venice Biennale (1999). Fries work is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, NY; Kunstmuseum Bonn, Germany; and Kunsthaus Zurich, Switzerland, among others.
