È l'ultimo capolavoro postumo del compositore Giacomo Meyerbeer, in scena per la prima volta all'opéra di Parigi nel 1865. Sabato 23 novembre 2013 alle ore 18.00 L'Africaine inaugurerà la Stagione lirica 2013-2014 del Teatro La Fenice. Un nuovo allestimento, con la direzione musicale dello specialista del repertorio francese Emmanuel Villaume, a più di cent anni dall ultima rappresentazione in Fenice, nel febbraio 1892. La regia dell impegnativo lavoro sarà affidata a Leo Muscato, vincitore del Premio Abbiati 2012, con le scene di Massimo Checchetto, i costumi di Carlos Tieppo e le luci di Alessandro Verazzi. L'anteprima di sabato 23 novembre verrà trasmessa in diretta da Rai Radio 3 e in differita dal circuito Euroradio. Meyerbeer, a leading figure on the European opera scene, lived in Italy between 1815 and 1824 and later became one of the great names of the grand opéra in Paris. The work is an exotic narration of the life of the explorer Vasco de Gama and his love for the slave-queen Sélika and Inès, the daughter of admiral Don Diego. From Lisbon in the late 1400s to the vicissitudes of a journey at sea towards the Cape of Good Hope, to the shipwreck on a beach of Madagascar, amidst a whirlwind of deception, jealousy and subterfuge: it is love that dictates the actions of the characters and their fate.
