Moreover, the present cantata is distinguished by the fact that it belongs among that group of cantatas which draws upon the newer hymns closely associated with the pietistical aria. 1 The text which frame the cantata, was written by Ahasverus Fritsch (1679); the earliest documentation of the melody is in the Darmstädter Gesangbuch of four-part closing chorale (movement 6), which lends the words of the Stollen (section a), a massive power which is restrained in the reprise of the Abgesang (section b), by means of the piano dynamic, which ob viously is due to the text, thus referring to the heartfelt introspective character (Alfred Dürr) of the opening chorus. Bach-Ausgabe, edited by Alfred Dörffel (foreword dated 1878). In the Neue Bach-Ausgabe (NBA) it was published in volume I/5 (1975/76), edited by Marianne Helms. Göttingen, June 2015 Translation: David Kosviner Frieder Rempp the melody is tossed continuously between the different instrumental groups. The motive of the hymn also dominates the instrumental interludes, as well as forming the counterpoint to the vocal parts, which likewise retain the instrumental prelude concludes this large scale movement: in this way Bach succeeded in transforming the love of Jesus which was atmospherically expressed in the text and melody of the hymn into a polyphonic setting. In the secco recitative which follows, the contralto continues with the theme of the earthly love of Jesus addressed in the example of this is the rising tritone interval on the word Schmerz (pain). The following da capo aria for tenor conby a three-part instrumental setting which not only anticipates the bitterness of life mentioned in the text by means of its chromatic characteristics, but also shapes the entire The second section is characterized by the contrast between the allegro melisma on the word toben (rage) and the promise of salvation, performed lento, in which the continuo concludes, as in the first section, with the four-measure motive of the beginning. In movement 4, once again a secco recitative, the bass invokes the victory over hell and death achieved with the dicting statements are striking: on the one hand, a ninth descending in third intervals for (kein) Höllenfeind kann mich verschlingen ([no] enemy from Hell can devour me), and on the other hand, a major scale descending in octaves for (ist der) Sieg schon zugedacht ([has the] victory already been awarded). Movement 5, a da capo aria, is a three-part setting in which the charming contrast between contrast expressed in the libretto between loneliness in the world and the constant presence of Jesus. An instrumenin rambling sixteenth notes is juxtaposed with the steady eighth-note pace of the continuo opens and concludes this movement. The inclusion of all of the instruments, as was customary, bestows a sonorous fullness to the unadorned 1 These are the cantatas Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben (BWV 8), Was frag ich nach der Welt (BWV 94), Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan (BWV 99), Mache dich, mein Geist, bereit (BWV 115) and Ich freue mich in dir (BWV 133). 4 Carus
