Sie setzt sich zusammen aus Bereichen der Entwicklungspsychologie, der klinischen Psychologie, der Neurophysiologie, der Neuroanatomie und den kognitiven Neurowissenschaften (Mrakotsky, 2007). Ursprünglich orientierte sie sich an Modellen der so genannten brainbahaviourrelationship (BBR) (Mrakotsky, 2007), welche vor allem auf Lokalisationsansätzen über adulte Hirnfunktionen basieren. Diese Ansätze erhielten ihre Daten wiederum aus Läsionsstudien an erwachsenen Gehirnen, welche auf das Kindesalter, aufgrund der erhöhten Plastizität des Gehirns, nicht anwendbar sind. Aber auch neuere Untersuchungen der Hirnfunktionen im Kindesalter, waren meist statischer Natur. Man orientierte sich noch überwiegend an statischen Lokalisationstheorien, anstatt an dynamischen Systemtheorien. Der Entwicklungskontext wurde also in der Vergangenheit aus den Neurowissenschaften noch weitestgehend ausgeklammert.
