It shows which of the two items has more or less of that quality. DER SUPERLATIV VON ADJEKTIVEN UND ADVERBEN WAS IST DER SUPERLATIV: = The superlative Der Superlativ vergleicht drei oder mehr Sachen (durch ein Adjektiv oder ein Adverb) The superlative compares three or more things in terms of a quality (either by means of an adjective or an adverb). The superltive shows which of the three or more items has the most or least of that quality. Schauen wir Beispiele auf Englisch und auf Deutsch: Englisch: The Pizza from Edwardo s is good, the Pizza from Gioardano s is better. but the Pizza from Lou Malnatti s ist am besten. I like swimming,i like dancing more, and I like to read the most. (regular forms) Adjektiv/Adverb + er z.b. schnell + er = schneller 2) Ausnahme mit Adjektiven/Adverben mit einem Vokal (a, o, u) und nur eine Silbe (syllabel)... Adjektiv/Adverb + + er z.b. schwach + + er = schwächer 3) * Ausnahme mit Adjektiven/Adverben mit el oder er am Ende Adjektiv/Adverb (ohne den letzten e ) + er z.b. dunkel (- e ) + er = dunkeler = dunkler z.b. teuer (- e ) + er = teuerer = teurer (Note this exception exists due to the pronunciation with ere or ele. Therefore, this exception will not occur with the Superlative forms since the letter combination with the Superlative form is not the same.)

Remember when the two items have the same amount of the quality, the adjective or adverb does not change ist form. Look above at the example and you ll see that the adjective did not change (groß) Here the adjective/adverb follows the rules we have learned for the comparative (don t forget the exceptions and the irregular forms).
