1 2. Wochenbericht SO259 (INDEX 2017) Eine arbeitsreiche erste Woche mit Fokus auf unseren Umweltarbeiten liegt hinter uns. Bereits in Anfahrt in das deutsche Lizenzgebiet konnten wir an drei ozeanographischen Stationen die Wassersäule bis in Tiefen von 5100 m mittels CTD- Rosette vermessen und beproben. Der komplexe Aufbau und die Aufeinanderfolge unterschiedlicher Wassermassen mit sehr unterschiedlichen Charakteristika u.a. in Temperatur, Dichte, Salinität, Sauerstoffgehalt und Strömungsverhalten beeinflussen die ozeanographischen Verhältnisse im Lizenzgebiet nachhaltig und die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sind für Umweltverträglichkeitsbetrachtungen zwingend erforderlich. Südwärts fließendes, sauerstoffarmes Wasser aus dem Arabischen Meer wird in Richtung des Arbeitsgebietes zunehmend durch nordwärts fließendes und kaltes Mittleres Antarktisches Tiefenwasser zwischengeschichtet. Dies liefert Rückschlüsse für die sehr komplexen und wechselhaften Strömungsverhältnisse im Lizenzgebiet. Seit Donnerstag befinden wir uns im Arbeitsgebiet und haben unsere Ermittlung von Umweltbasisdaten mit Schwerelotkernen (bis 8,70 m Sedimentkern), Multicorer, CTD- Rosette und Wärmestrommessungen aufgenommen. Erste Untersuchungen zur Biodiversität und zur Variabilität der Sedimentation wurden durchgeführt. Unter anderem haben wir zur Untersuchung der planktonischen Lebensformen erstmals unser neues mobiles Rasterelektronenmikroskop eingesetzt. Rasterelektronenmikroskopische Aufnahmen eines Copepoda (Ruderfußkrebs, Kauapparat, links) und eines Ostracoda (Muschelkrebs, rechts) aus ozeanographischen CTD-Stationen im Umfeld des Lizenzgebietes (HIROX SH4000-M).

Wochenbericht SO259 (INDEX 2017) Gestern und heute wurden zwei Sedimentfallen mit Strömungsmessern erfolgreich geborgen, die seit der letzten Ausfahrt Ende vergangenen Jahres in den Lizenzclustern 1 und 3 im Monatszyklus Sedimentpartikel aus der Wassersäule aufgefangen und die Strömungsrichtungen aufgezeichnet haben. In Cluster 1 wurde in 500m Höhe über dem Meeresboden erneut eine Sedimentfalle für die Dauer eines Jahres verankert. Ausbringen einer Sedimentfalle zur Bestimmung der bodennahen Sinkstoffe in Cluster 1 des deutschen Lizenzgebietes. Die oberflächennahen Sedimente im Bereich der Fallen wurden mittels Multicorer beprobt. Auch die petrologischen Arbeiten zur Ermittlung von Magmenkammerprozessen und Magmendifferentiation als wichtige Faktoren

3 2. Wochenbericht SO259 (INDEX 2017) lagerstättenbildender Prozesse wurden mit dem erstmaligen Einsatz eines Vulkanitstoßrohres der Universität Erlangen sehr erfolgreich fortgesetzt. In einer Reihe von abendlichen Vorträgen hat ein Teil der Fahrtteilnehmer sich und ihre jeweiligen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten vorgestellt. Nach eher unruhigem Beginn zeigt sich das Wetter seit zwei Tagen nun von seiner besseren Seite. Alle Fahrtteilnehmer sind mit großem Engagement in die Arbeiten eingebunden und das Interesse an den einzelnen Geräten und Stationen ist sehr groß. 4 2nd Weekly Report SO259 (INDEX 2017) We finished an intense first week with a general focus on our environmental baseline studies. During the transit into the German license area, we studied and sampled the water column during three oceanographic stations with the CTD rosette down to 5,100 m water depth. The complex structure and the stacking of different water masses with quite different characteristics, e.g. in temperature, density, salinity, oxygen concentrations and current directions largely influence the oceanographic conditions in the license area and the results of our studies are necessary for any future environmental impact plans. Southward moving, oxygen-depleted water from the Arabian Sea undulates and intercalates in the direction of the working area with northward flowing cold Medium Antarctic Deep Water. The modelling allows new evidences for the complex and variable currents in the license area. Since Thursday, we work in the license area and started the collection of environmental baseline data with gravity corer (up to 8,70m core length), multicorer, CTD rosette and heat flow probe. First studies of the biodiversity and the variation of the sedimentation process were carried out. Among other measurements, we used our new mobile scanning electron microscope for the first time for the identification of planktonic animals. Yesterday and today, we recovered two sediment trap moorings with current meters successfully. The traps collected sediment particles from the water column in a monthly

5 2nd Weekly Report SO259 (INDEX 2017) routine in the license clusters 1 and 3 since the last exploration cruise end of last year. Current directions close to the seafloor are recorded as well. In Cluster 1 we deployed again a new multiannual sediment trap mooring 500m above the seafloor. Deployment of a sediment trap for the measurements of particle fluxes close to the seafloor in cluster 1 of the German license area. The surface sediments in the area of the sediment trap installation were sampled with the multicorer. The petrological sampling for the study of magma chamber processes and magma differentiation as an important aspect in the formation of massive sulfide deposits were continued successfully during this cruise with the first deployments of a wax corer from the University of Erlangen. A series of evening talks by a number of cruise participants introduced the scientific work to the other participants. Following a rather windy start of the cruise, the weather

All participants join the workings and tasks with great engagement and enthusiasm, and the interest in the different marine observation and sampling tools and stations is consistently high.
