7 Hamburg Quality of life in a waterside Metropolis Hamburg is also called the gate to the world. The city is the second biggest in Germany and has a lot to offer: impressive sights, a harbour mood and a multicultural atmosphere, an exciting history and interesting stories and so much more. Beside this Hamburg is also a very green city on the water is not just and of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Even the normally reticent citizens of the Hanseatic city have difficulty hiding their pride about "their" city. Dresden Saxony's baroque capital at the Elbe river The beautiful city at the Elbe river belongs through the wealth of its cultural and art treasures as well as its attractive situation to the prettiest cities of Europe. Dresden has been the residence of sovereigns and kings already since The most beautiful buildings of the baroque old town were created during the regency of August the Strong ( ), who was simultaneously also king of Poland. He was a great sponsor of the arts and enriched the saxon treasury with numerous precious objects. About 3000 works out of this collection are issued in the green vault. It is the largest art collection of this type in Europe. of the most famous buildings is also the Zwinger. In its architecture, the baroque building is modelled on a Roman amphitheater. Another highlight is the Semper Opera house, the Brühl's Terraces, numerous historic restaurants or the spectacular nature called Elbsandstandgebirge. Munich- the capital of Bavaria and a must-see for everyone who wants to get to know the south of Germany There is no place better to experience the typical Bavarian flair and the warm character of Bavarian s than Munich. Munich combines various stylistic periods into a stunning mix of historical and modern architecture. King Ludwig I influenced Munichs townscape with his pompous and generous architecture with broad avenues and the contrast between classicistic restraint and baroque profusion. Bold creativity and innovation have set new architectural accents all over the city. The world-renowned tent roof, the landmark of the Olympic Park, inspires spectators even four decades after its construction. The Allianz Arena is regarded Germany s most beautiful and thrilling soccer stadium. The recently opened BMW Welt is a milestone of dynamic architecture. The best of all? Try a real German Biergarten and you would like to stay forever. 7

An unbelievable number of sights can be seen, reflecting the mind-set and Zeitgeist of the city and at the same time the rich history and drama of the 20th century. From Friday evening until Sunday afternoon we will try to experience as much as possible of the unique atmosphere. Amongst other sites, we will visit the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie and see what remains of the Berlin Wall. On a Berlin-rally you will explore the city`s sights by yourself and also have some free time to do your Xmas-shopping on one of the beautiful Christmas markets. Depending on weather and the interests of the group we will go to one of the great Museums Berlin is famous for, explore Berlin by boat or go on a tour through the Berlin graffite art scene, for which the city is famous. MORE ABOUT OUR PLACEMENTS Sending your own child abroad can be a big step. In order to assure the natural parents that their child is in good hands with us, we pay special attention to the following points: 1. Careful selection and counselling of the host family We pay a personal visit to our host families and advise them on the student exchange in a two- to threehour conversation. During this visit, we take a look at their home, the surrounding neighbourhood and the local school. In the course of the conversation, we do not solely explain the exchange programme to the host family but we also gather impressions on whether the family is prepared to host an exchange 56

57 student. Experience has shown that in addition to hospitality and willingness, openness and flexibility are indispensable. If, for example, expectations of the exchange student are too high or we notice there are family difficulties, then we do not consider these families suitable hosts. It is also very important to us that the families trust us, so they contact us if difficulties arise. 2. Care of the host family and exchange student Two to three weeks after the arrival of the exchange student, we pay another visit to the family and get in contact with his supervising teacher. During the visit we have a joint conversation and afterwards talk to the student and the family individually. In case we detect any misunderstandings or problems, we help to find a solution. One example could be, that the family needs to set up clearer rules or they need to encourage their student to express his wishes. We will talk about expectations, perceptions and cultural aspects. In the end, it is these conversations and reflections that allow both parties to develop their intercultural skills. In the course of one semester we arrange three telephone appointments. This constant contact serves to show the student, that we re there for him. He should contact us at any time if he has any problems so that we can put him in touch with a member of staff that is familiar to him. If it is necessary, we will pay another visit to the family at any time to make sure that a solution to the problem is found. We can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Everyone is given the telephone number of our office as well as our mobile phone numbers. 3. It doesn t always have to work out Mostly, things are running smoothly and both parties benefit from the exchange. However, it can happen that despite a wonderful family and a highly motivated and open-minded student, one of the two of them is unhappy with the arrangement. Of course, we are trying to understand both parties and work together with them on finding a solution. But if, for example, the mutual trust has been violated or the chemistry is just not right, it is best to change host families. Naturally, we want the students to know that a host family is no hotel room that can be cancelled or easily exchanged. On the other hand, we don t want to enforce an unhappy stay and we are open to necessary changes of host families. Sometimes, the student only needs a second chance to show himself from his best side. And this chance should be given to him. 4. Regular reports from the beginning on Once we have found a family for the student, he will get a detailed placement letter. In this letter we will introduce the host family, the region and the school the student will visit. We want the student and the natural parents to know as exactly as possible where the journey is heading and to get an idea of the new environment. After the arrival of the student, we will visit the host family again. This visit will be documented in writing. Another detailed report will follow after the first half of the programme is over and at any time problems arise that could be of relevance to the natural parents. 5. Worries, problems and questions Worries, problems and questions are taken very seriously by us - no matter whether they come from students, natural parents of host families. We will use our years of expertise to counsel and advise as best we can. However, the most important thing is to listen to all parties. No one knows his child as well as its natural parents. Only the exchange student himself can let others know how he feels. The host family is best able to estimate how they perceive the child in the new surroundings. The same situation can be described very differently. We know there is no such thing as a right estimation and therefore try to take all sides and information into account when trying to find a solution. In order for this to work, good cooperation of all parties involved is necessary. * In favour of a more comfortable reading flow, we have only used the masculine. 57

73 OUR CITY TOUR ON SATURDAY At first we will see the Frauenkirche and Neumarkt Square. The Frauenkirche is Dresden's most famous symbol. This monumental Protestant church was bombed to ruins in 1945, then left as a war monument for more than 40 years and rebuilt starting from the 1990s. On the surrounding Neumarkt square, the typical Baroque gabled houses were rebuilt section by section and by forming the old town once again, they are the pride and joy of the citizens of Dresden. The Fürstenzug, or Procession of Princes, a 101-metre mural tiled with Meissen porcelain, links the Neumarkt and the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace is one of the most impressive pieces of architecture in Dresden. This Renaissance building was constructed in the 15th century as a new center of power for the Saxon electoral princes and kings. Today, it is a museum complex for a state art collection. If you want see famous paintings and beautiful treasure collections, you will have a chance to go inside on Sunday. Today, we will continue to the Sanctissimae Trinitatis Cathedral - Saxony's largest ecclesiastical building. aubiko e.v., address: Stückenstraße 74, D Hamburg, phone: +49 (0) , mobile: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) , info@aubiko.de, website: 73

74 OUR CITY TOUR ON SATURDAY One of Dresde s most famous buildings is the Semper Opera House and we will, of course, pass it on our tour. The Semper Opera House is considered one of the world's loveliest and is the residence and main venue for Dresden's Saxon State Orchestra. Right next to it is the most significant building of the late Baroque period - the Zwinger. It is a composite work of art combining architecture, sculpture and painting and hosts the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments and the Porcelain Collection. Behind the Zwinger and Semper Opera is The Brühl's Terrace. The most architecturally beautiful section of the Elbe's banks in Dresden was laid out between 1739 and 1748 as Count Brühl's private pleasure gardens, and is known as the Balco y of Europe. From the terrace, you can access the Art Academy, Dresden Fortress and the Albertinum. At the end of our tour, we will meet Augustus the Strong the king responsible for Dresde s unique opulence of architecture, art and culture. The golden statue shows Augustus as powerfully as he wanted to be seen and is called the Golde Horse a. After this very impressive inside view of history, we will explain what the Blue Wo der of Dresden is. You will also hear about the flood, the meaning of the Elbe river and about the current political developments in Dresden that raise a lot of attention in Germany and abroad. Afterwards, we will have time in the afternoon for shopping and the Christmas market. aubiko e.v., address: Stückenstraße 74, D Hamburg, phone: +49 (0) , mobile: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) , info@aubiko.de, website: 74

75 OUR CITY TOUR ON SUNDAY On Sunday, you may choose between spending more time at the Christmas market or you can join us in a visit to one of the museums. You can choose between the Old Masters Picture Gallery with Raphael s isti e Mado a or the former royal treasure collection, the Green Vault. We also highly recommend the Hygiene Museum and its very special exhibitions about the Hu a Adve ture. While being in Dresden, we will tell you more about those options, so you can decide where you would prefer to go after our tour on Saturday. The departure from Dresden depends on your train or bus schedule. We hope that it is possible to arrange a departure for 2 main groups at pm and 2.00 pm. aubiko e.v., address: Stückenstraße 74, D Hamburg, phone: +49 (0) , mobile: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) , info@aubiko.de, website: 75

84 WELCOME TO PRAGUE! During its one thousand years of existence, the city grew from a small settlement to a multicultural capital of the modern European state Czech Republic. Prague is also known as the City of Gold because the evening sun gives its rooftops a golden glow. The turbulent history of the city included three centuries under the Habsburg monarchy, six years of Nazi occupation and four decades of communism. Despite all the historical changes, Prague has maintained its charm and beautiful architecture and has now become a tourist magnet. Today, the city is not only a literal textbook of styles throughout the centuries but it also has a very lively, cosmopolitan side, just waiting to be explored... Photo by DAVID ILIFF. 96 TRANSPORT TO AND FROM MUNICH ( / ) We will all meet on the 26th of June at pm at Munich Central Station or at the ZOB (Bus Station). This depends on your arrival, whether you are coming by bus or train. One of our employees will be there at 8.00 pm in case some students arrive earlier. Please let us know your exact arrival details in Munich as soon as possible. We also need your current mobile phone number! Also make sure that your mobile is charged during the journey. Our bus will leave Munich at pm and we are travelling overnight so we hope that you can sleep in the bus. Around am on the 27th of June we will arrive in Budapest. On the 1st of July at pm we will travel to Munich via bus. We arrive there on the 2nd of July around am. Please book your connecting journeys and inform us about them. One of our employees will take all the students that are leaving until am to their respective bus or train. Why is there no flight to and from Munich? Before students can register for the trip, they have to discuss their participation with their host family, their parents and their school. Based on our experience, this takes so long that there is not much time left before the trip starts. On many occasions, we hoped that students would register in time so we could book tickets for them. Since flight tickets are non-transferrable and expensive, we can only book them after receiving your confirmation as well as full name, date of birth etc. Taking the bus is more flexible and we can take those students that decide to join the trip more spontaneously. Is the transport from the host family to Munich and back included in the price? No. Since all exchange students arrive from different places, the journey to Munich is organized by the students and host families themselves. If there are problems or questions, we are always available and will try to search for an affordable and acceptable solution together. aubiko e.v., address: Stückenstraße 74, D Hamburg, phone: +49 (0) , mobile: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) , info@aubiko.de, website:

97 HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN THE TRIP? 1. Please fill out the registration form very carefully. You will need the signature of your parents and host family. The registration form contains important information, which we need because you are underage. That is why it is a bit longer than a normal online booking on the internet. You can find the form here: 2. After we have received the money, you will be sent a confirmation of participation. 3. You will receive an exact agenda of the trip and all the relevant information (what should I pack? etc.) This information is sent to you and your host family. Should the information not reach you, please contact the aubiko office in Hamburg. 4. Please plan and book your journey to and from Munich and send us your arrival and departure details. 5. Save the aubiko emergency number and check if you have sent us your correct mobile phone number. aubiko e.v., address: Stückenstraße 74, D Hamburg, phone: +49 (0) , mobile: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) , info@aubiko.de, website:

119 WELCOME TO BUDAPEST The capital of Hungary is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites with two impressive sights: The banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle, which is one of the most romantic parts of the city. The historical district is 800 years old, but the beautiful medieval monuments are perfectly preserved. The Danube separates the cosmopolitan city Budapest into two parts: the hilly Buda and the flat Pest. Important landmarks of the city are the Castle Hill with the former Royal Palace or the rocky Gellért Hill with the Statue of Liberty and the Citadel. The city is also famous for its spas that have a history of over 2000 years! Tuesday 27th June On Tuesday after breakfast, we will continue our journey from Vienna to Budapest. After our arrival, we will check into our accommodations in the city centre. Afterwards, we will eat lunch together and walk around Budapest to take in all the wonderful sights and get a first impression of the places. There will be time afterwards to relax and prepare for the next days. aubiko e.v., address: Stückenstraße 74, D Hamburg, phone: +49 (0) , mobile: +49 (0) fax: +49 (0) , info@aubiko.de, website: 119

All German courses are taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers of German as a foreign language. We have a maximum of 15 participants per group. Besides the German language we also focus on understanding the local culture. Integration is very important to us. Our German courses are communication-oriented and the teaching is focused on the course participants. Our language course partner is called UNS university service. It is one of the biggest language institutes in northern Germany and it is focused on preparing students from all over the world for their study in Germany. Both are located in the city centre of Hamburg. 126

127 UNIVERSITY PREP COURSE YOUR KEY TO STUDY SUCCESSFULLY IN GERMANY! Location: Hamburg and Kiel You can choose to book the course in Hamburg or Kiel. Hamburg is the second biggest city in Germany and Kiel is more familial. What you choose is up to you and we can highly recommend both. Hamburg is famous for the quality of life in a waterside Metropolis. It is also called the gate to the world. The city is the second biggest in Germany and has a lot to offer: impressive sights, a harbour mood, a multicultural atmosphere, an exciting history, interesting stories and so much more. Beside this, Hamburg is also a very green city at the water and therefore one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. Even the usually reticent citizens of the Hanseatic city have difficulty hiding their pride in their city. Kiel has a long shipbuilding and naval tradition but today it is characterized by its vibrant student scene, laid-back lifestyle and urban flair. You can sense this atmosphere from the city s beautiful setting at the Kiel Fjord, its modern and spacious city center and Dänische Straße, a street of late-19th century buildings full of maritime charm in the heart of Kiel. 127

128 UNIVERSITY PREP COURSE YOUR KEY TO STUDY SUCCESSFULLY IN GERMANY! Intensive Language Course (all levels) as well as Preparation and Guidance for the university entrance exam TestDaF What is TestDaF? TestDaF is a German language test for foreign students who plan to study in Germany or who require recognized certification of their language skills. How much time do I need to pass the TestDaF? It all depends on your level of German. After our written and oral entry tests, we will tell you which level you are at. For each level you need about 6 weeks. After each level you will take a test. If you are a beginner you need about 9-12 months. It is possible to manage all levels in 9 months, but it is more convenient if you plan in more time. We also strongly recommend the 12 months course for beginners, because you need time to explore Germany, to apply for a seat at a University and to make friends. 128
