It involves the analysis of linguistic means (cohesive devices) employed to link sentences to form textual units, as well as the study of texts in terms of their communicative functions, that is, the purposes and goals the texts serve. Historical text linguistics investigates the relation between the linguistic forms used and the communicative functions of texts from earlier stages of the English language, with a special focus on changes in forms and/or functions occurring across time. Theories relating to specific aspects of these interface relations will be introduced, bringing a wide range of phenomena within the scope of a general discussion of the organization of the grammar. We shall focus, in particular, on the way in which arguments for alternative views of the interface relations are constructed, the theoretical consequences of these views, and the controversies which surround them Non-Standard English in Literature Fr , 107 Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek, B IV (3/310), nicht am The class will give a general introduction to the concept of a standard in language, to variation in and varieties of English, to changing attitudes towards linguistic varietes, and to methods of and reasons for exploiting them in literature. The course covers a broad selection of topics, ranging from fundamental methodological issues to specific ideas and theories. For each topic, the analysis of a short introductory text will form the basis for the discussion. The issue of essay-writing in linguistics will also be addressed in the course of the semester, using model questions and answers relating to the topics discussed. K. B a u e r In this course we will focus on language across two modalities: the auditory-vocal modality of spoken languages and the visual-gestural modality of signed languages. We will discuss various important linguistic issues of phonology, morphology, syntax and some characteristics of grammaticalization processes. Besides the intriguing parallels between spoken and signed languages, we will also address the issue of the modality-specificity Reading Early Modern English Poetry Di , 107 Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek, B VI (3/314) K. G a t h e r This course provides a linguistic, genre-based introduction to Early Modern English poetry (ca ). On the one hand, we will deal with linguistic aspects such as pronunciation, spelling, morphology, and syntax, and have a look at metre and rhyme. On the other hand, we will try to answer the question whether Early Modern English poetry can be seen as a child of its times, i.e. whether it correlates with historic events such as the renaissance or the reformation. Are specific poetic genres linked to certain extra-linguistic incidents? Regular and active participation are mandatory in order to obtain a Teilnahme- or Leistungsnachweis. For a LN you must pass a written test at the end of term. Seite 10

Teilnehmer: 50 Mi , 107 Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek, B I (4/405) Many features and constructions of English grammar turn out to be much more "plausible" if they are seen in the context of their historical development. This applies above all to the more recent developments in English grammar, whose rise may be traced back to the Early Modern English or to the Modern English periods (e.g. do -support, aspectual forms, participle and gerund constructions). In this seminar we will look at selected topics of English grammar both with a synchronic and a diachronic perspective. Against this background questions of (contemporary) grammatical change in progress will also be addressed. T. K o h n e n Wichtiger Hinweis: Dieses Seminar wird durch meine Vorlesung "English Syntax" ergänzt, deren Besuch dringend empfohlen wird. Wichtige Informationen zu synchronen und diachronen Aspekten der englischen Syntax, die im Seminar nur kurz angesprochen werden können, werden in der Vorlesung ausführlich dargelegt Language and Psychology 2 SWS; Hauptseminar; Max. Teilnehmer: 50 Mi , 103 Philosophikum, S 93 In this course, students will have the opportunity to learn about the intersection between language and psychological health and dysfunction. The course will provide information on some of the latest research which has been gathered on not only the linguistic manifestation of various psychological disorders, but also the ways in which language can be used to either improve or maintain individual and group mental health. Students in this course will be required to complete several short written assignments, pass a final examination, and write a final term paper. Regular, active participation is also required Onomastics 2 SWS; Hauptseminar; Max. Teilnehmer: 50 Di , 103 Philosophikum, S 93 One of the most frequently forgotten but nevertheless most fascinating areas of linguistic research involves onomastics, the study of names and naming. In this class, students will be introduced to the many different areas of modern onomastic research and the accompanying theories regarding the diachronic and synchronic processes which combine to determine the names people devise to label their perceptual experience. Students will be expected to conduct their own original pieces of research. Students in this course will be required to complete several short written assignments, pass a final examination, and write a final term paper. However, many studies claim that L2 learners have difficulties in comprehending idioms and therefore avoid their production. The aim of this course is to improve this situation by integrating linguistic insight from the field of idiom research into foreign language teaching materials. We will start by surveying the description and explanation of idioms in linguistic studies. Then we will analyze the didactic implications of these studies and focus on L2 teaching aspects of idioms. After an examination of idiom treatment in textbooks used in the classroom, we will develop our own teaching materials on idioms. Regular attendance and active participation are mandatory to obtain a Teilnahmenachweis (details t.b.a.). A detailed bibliography will be provided in the first session. B. A b e l Issues in Morphology Di , 100 Hauptgebäude, Hörsaal VIIa The course will focus on three issues that are currently discussed in morphological research: a) borderlines, b) interfaces and c) representations. The first topic deals with questions like What is a word? or How do we distinguish between derivation, compounding and inflection? The second topic will focus on the interface between morphology and phonology. We will discuss the idea of lexical strata, selectional restrictions of individual affixes and the parsability of affixes. The third topic raises questions about the representation of complex words in the mental lexicon. Are they stored as complete units or are they decomposed into individual constituents? After a survey of the issues in question, each student will have the opportunity to deal with one aspect in more detail, depending on his/her interest. Regular attendance and active participation are mandatory to obtain a Teilnahmenachweis (details t.b.a.). A detailed bibliography will be provided in the first session B. A b e l Language Disorders Di , 105 Hörsaalgebäude, Hörsaal D (ET/4) In this class, students will have the chance to learn about some of the leading disorders affecting the production and/or comprehension of language. Towards this end, students will study some of the most modern research which has been conducted on the documented manifestations and suspected causes of linguistic dysfunctions among both children and adults. In addition, students will learn about many of the therapeutic interventions which have been developed to help sufferers of these language disorders both inside and outside of the classroom environment. Students in this course will be required to complete several short written assignments. Active, regular participation is required as well Late Middle English and Early Modern English Letters Mo , 100 Hauptgebäude, Hörsaal V Private letters are among the last vernacular text types developing in the history of the English language. This seminar will focus on the most important linguistic aspects of this genre and its historical and cultural background, placing special emphasis on private correspondence from the 16 th and 17 th centuries. Typical examples and extracts will be read in class. In addition, this seminar will deal with the essential parts of Early Modern English grammar and lexis. In this regard, it aims at students who want to brush up their knowledge of Early Modern English (e.g. as a preparation for Staatsexamen ). A master copy of the texts which will be read in class will be made available at the beginning of the course Universal Grammar Fr , 103 Philosophikum, S 89 I. L a v e r s u c h T. K o h n e n K. 13 In this course, we examine in what ways languages differ from each other with regard to their syntactic and morphological organization. Research on cross-linguistic variation has been conducted from two distinct methodological perspectives, that of the "Comparativist" school associated with Greenberg, and that of the "Principles and Parameters" approach within the framework of Transformational Grammar. We shall survey topics which have figured prominently in both approaches, and consider to what extent each of the methodologies permits the formulation of possible universals and how the facts of language variation are to be accounted for. The discussion will involve examination of data from a wide range of languages, but will also include reference to specific contrasts between English and German.
