1 SELF-STUDY DIARY (or Lerntagebuch) GER102 This diary has several aims: To show evidence of your independent work by using an electronic Portfolio (i.e. the Mahara e-portfolio) To motivate you to work regularly on your chosen website To help you keep a clear record of the work you accomplish To enable you to organize your independent study To enable you to look back at your self-study work and appreciate the progress made In the course of this semester, you will work on at least one of the following interactive German language websites: 1. Sprachzentrum Buenos Aires «Videos A1 / A2» : (incl online exercises to the videos) 2. BBC Languages German «Talk German»: (beginner level) watch via Narrowband options 3. Langenscheidt Verlag «Optimal A1» : sene/optimal/lernen/online_und_digital/online- Projekte_und_uebungen/Optimal_A1/9244 (online projects and exercises for Optimal A1) 4. Deutsche Welle «Deutsch Interaktiv» : (incl. beginner level) 5. Deutsche Welle «Mission Berlin» : (incl beginner level) 6. Deutsche Welle «Radio D» : (incl beginner level) 7. Deutsche Welle «Deutsch warum nicht» : (incl. beginner level) 8. Deutsche Welle «Audiotrainer» : (incl. beginner level) 9. Mein-Deutschbuch.de: (incl Youtube chanel)

2 Some of the links in these websites might be dead, but can still be found on the net (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). Use the information provided to do a new search and find the material you need to complete the exercises. IMPORTANT: We recommend that you work on 2 to 3 different websites ONLY. You can also decide to work on only one website if the website offers enough activities (this is the case of the Deutsche Welle websites, for example). So our advice is first to explore all the websites and decide on 2 or 3 you would like to work on most. Then, stick to your choice and get to work! Avoid jumping around and doing one or two exercises only on each website. Self-study requires self-discipline and perseverance. You have until Week 12 to work on the activities offered on the websites and to complete your diary. Explore all the links provided so that you can gradually familiarize yourself with the German language in its spoken, sung or written forms. 1. Please note that the point of this work is not to include copies of the exercises you do, but to reflect on their content or/and your self-study skills and/or your progress in German. 2. Also, this diary is not a race against time! You are expected to do some work on the website(s) a little and often and to do it thoroughly, NOT to rush through the activities proposed by the website(s)! You should work on this self-study project at least once a week. Twice would be better. Note that Mahara records the date of each piece of material you upload so that it is easy to see if you cram in your self-study work or not! AVOID CRAMMING as it will affect your mark negatively. 3. Your diary must clearly record: the dates at which you visit the website the exact exercises you do with comments on your learning experience You can write your comments both in German and English! Some German is expected. 4. Submit your diary as well as the final reflection sheet in Week 12.

You can also decide to work on only one website if the website offers enough activities (this is the case of the Deutsche Welle websites, for example).

3 TIPS: Design a study plan (How often will you work on your selfstudy project? When is the best time for you to work on this? Etc.). Find a partner with whom you can share frustrations, discoveries, ideas as well as discuss independent learning matters. Introduce your study buddy in your diary! Think about the presentation and the organization of your work (How to present your reflections, comments, ideas, etc.? How to be consistent in the presentation of your work? How to keep the reader interested? Etc.). All evidence will have to be presented on your Mahara eportfolio. You can access your Mahara e-portfolio from the CEAL s website at: Read the Marking Scheme before you start. Don t wait until Week 10 or 11 to begin! A framework for your self-study diary is provided below to help you organize your entries. VIEL SPASS!
