When you attempt to launch ACT! by Sage or ACT by Sage Premium for the first time you receive one the following error messages: "Could not connect to the SQL Server Instance." or "Failed to open a connection to the database." This can result if, during the installation of ACT!, the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition was not installed completely and/or the SQL ACT7 instance was not created. You must uninstall any part of the SQL Server that may have installed, and then run the SQLInstall.exe file. You will find this file on your ACT! CD. Important Note: If you run the SQLInstall.exe file when the ACT7 instance is present you will receive the following message: "SQL Installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." This file is designed to install the SQL Server 2005 and create the ACT7 instance when one does not exist and should ONLY be run in that situation. There is NO need to remove ACT!. The purpose of the SQLInstall.exe file is to complete your installation without needing to uninstall and reinstall ACT! To identify if this is your issue, verify if the ACT7 instance was created. Use the following steps: 1. Ensure that the ACT7 instance was not created by reviewing the Windows Services panel for the SQL Server (ACT7) listing. a. Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears. b. Type services.msc in the Open field, and then click OK. The Services panel launches.

2 c. If SQL SERVER (ACT7) is present, this is not your issue; otherwise continue. 2. Remove any SQL Server component that may have been installed. Use the following steps: Note: Not all components may be present. a. Open the Windows Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs. b. Locate and click if present MSXML 6.0 Parser, and then click the Remove button. The the following Add or Remove Programs dialog box appears. c. Click Yes. The following MSXML 6.0 Parser dialog box appears.

3 d. Click Yes. The following MSXML 6.0 Parser progress indicator appears e. You are returned to the Add or Remove Programs panel when completed. f. Repeat steps two through five for the following components listed in the Add or Remove Programs panel: Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) Microsoft SQL Server Native Client Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer g. Locate and click Microsoft SQL Server 2005 if present, and then click Remove. The following Uninstaller Error message appears. h. Click Yes. The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 listing is removed from the Add or Remove Program panel. Close the Add or Remove Programs panel. 3. Delete the Microsoft SQL Server folder from your computer: a. Launch Windows Explorer (or open My Computer). b. Locate and delete the Microsoft SQL Server folder from the Program Files folder. c. Close Windows Explorer (or My Computer). 4. Run the SQLInstall.exe file Note: The following information is provided as a convenience. Sage Software, Small Business Division, does not provide support for Microsoft Products. For more information on this topic go to Microsoft.com. 1. Insert your ACT! installation CD. When the installation menu appears, click Browse CD. 2. Double-click the Dependencies folder from your ACT! CD and click SQLInstall.exe. The following Disclaimer message box appears.

4 3. Review the Disclaimer and then click OK. The following Warning message box appears. 4. Ensure all the listed components are removed from the Add or Remove Programs panel, and then click OK. The following browser dialog box appears. 5. If needed, browse to the location of the ACT! installation files or the ACT! program CD, locate the Dependencies folder, and then click Continue. The following Extracting Files message box appears:

5 6. When the extraction is completed, the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup - Installing Prerequisites dialog box appears. 7. When completed, click Install. The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup - System Configuration Check - Scanning message box briefly appears.

6 8. When completed, the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup - System Configuration Check dialog box appears.

7 9. If any of the Action items have a failed Status the installation will stop. You will find more information on the failure in the Message column. The SQL Express install is complete message box appears.

8 10. Note the location of the your backed up and this installation log files. Enable the Check here to view the log file if you would like to look at the log file now, otherwise click OK to close this message box. 11. Launch ACT!.
