3 4 How to use your pass HOW TO USE YOUR PASS COMMENT UTILISER VOTRE LONDON PASS ANLEITUNG ZUM PASS GETTING STARTED Before you use your London Pass carefully check all the details. Your card is programmed to be activated from the first time it is used it will then be active for daytime use for the day or consecutive days shown on the card. For example, if you use a three day pass for the first time on a Monday, it will then be valid for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday only. It is NOT valid for 24 hour periods. When you are sure that the details are correct, you must sign and date the card in the space provided in order to validate it for use. Please note that using your London Pass for the special offers at Crest of London and the Original Sightseeing Bus Tour will activate the Pass. AT THE ATTRACTION When you get to the attraction the benefits of your London Pass become clear. Go to the admissions point bearing The London Pass signs or as detailed in the attractions pages. The attendant will record your pass and you will be shown straight through. You will not be required to pay an entry fee and you may avoid the queues. Opening times may change you are advised to check with the relevant attraction before you visit. Please ensure you check all the details about the attraction you wish to visit in the relevant section of this guidebook. Please note there is no re-admission to any attraction. Many of the sites that are included in the London Pass require groups to pre-book directly. Some sites do not accept the Pass for groups and others have booking charges. Groups may not receive queue skipping priority or be refused entrance if they have not pre-booked. We advise groups to contact individual attractions prior to travel to ensure conditions are met. Überprüfen Sie alle Angaben sorgfältig, bevor Sie Ihren London Pass zum ersten Mal benutzen. Ihre Karte wird bei der ersten Benutzung aktiviert und ist darauf tagsüber für den auf der Karte angegebenen Zeitraum gültig. Wenn Sie einen Dreitagespass beispielsweise erstmals am Montag benutzen, ist er nur für Montag, Dienstag und Mittwoch gültig. Überprüfen Sie sämtliche Angaben und unterschreiben und datieren Sie dann die Karte in dem vorgesehenen Feld erst dadurch wird die Karte gültig. NICHT für 24-Stunden-Zeiträume gültig. Wenn Sie sich sicher sind, dass die Angaben richtig sind, müssen Sie die Karte an der dafür vorgesehenen Stelle unterschreiben und mit einem Datum versehen, um sie für die Nutzung wirksam zu machen. Bitte beachten Sie, dass Ihr Ticket aktiviert wird, wenn Sie Ihr London-Ticket für das Sonderangebot bei Crest of London und für die originelle Besichtigungstour mit dem Bus nutzen. BEI DER ATTRAKTION Bei Ihrer Ankunft bei der Attraktion werden die Vorteile des London Pass sofort ersichtlich. Begeben Sie sich zu dem mit dem London Pass-Signet gekennzeichneten oder dem in der Beschreibung der Attraktion angegebenen Eingang. Der Pass wird elektronisch gelesen und der Eintritt ist frei. Sie brauchen keine Eintrittsgebühr zu zahlen und in manchen Fällen auch nicht anzustehen. Öffnungszeiten sind Änderungen unterworfen lassen Sie sich von der jeweiligen Attraktion vor einem Besuch die Öffnungszeiten bestätigen. Bitte überprüfen Sie alle Angaben zur Attraktion, die Sie besuchen möchten, im relevanten Abschnitt dieses Führers. 10 18 19 INTRODUCTION TO LONDON London is enormous in many ways its vast history and large size together can make it seem rather daunting! Break it into bite-size chunks however, and you have the best chance of seeing the very best the city has to offer. The West End is what most people consider to be central London. This area includes famous places such as Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Soho. Covent Garden is a brilliant area for boutique shopping and is renowned for its famous covered piazza. Soho is a buzzing area full of bars and restaurants and next to the world famous Leicester Square, where if you re lucky, you might catch sight of a movie star at a premiere! Bankside and South Bank merge into one making it one of the nicest places for a walk in central London. Stroll alongside the art installations of the Hayward Gallery, hear recitals at Royal Festival Hall, sample local delicacies at Borough Market or enjoy a beverage at the George Inn one of London s last surviving galleried coaching inns. If you feel like splashing out then head in the direction of Kensington & Knightsbridge as it s home to the world famous department store Harrods! But Kensington is also the location of some of the world s most renowned (and free!) museums the Victoria & Albert, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Westminster is an important area of London - it has been the seat of power for both the government and the monarchy and it is here you will find Downing Street, home to the Prime Minister, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Why not explore it further using our suggested walking route overleaf. Greenwich is a bit further out but deserves a day s exploration. Once a playground for kings and queens, with Henry VIII and his daughters Mary I and Elizabeth I born here, Greenwich is now a World Heritage Site. Home to Greenwich Mean Time the area is a breath of fresh air with a maritime feel unlike anywhere else in the city. There are many other areas to explore in London from Notting Hill with its movie connections and Camden with its canal and famous markets, to the City and the East End hip and trendy and full of cool bars and pop up shops. Check out the different areas below but don t be afraid to explore further there are many hidden gems just off the beaten track. SHOPS 1. Oxford Street The place for famous high street names like Marks & Spencer as well as the main department stores Selfridges, Debenhams and John Lewis. 2. Regent Street Flagship stores for big names like Apple, Burberry and Timberland. Just off Regent Street you will find the luxury store Liberty. 3. Set beside other famous sights including Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. Just around the corner is the distinctive striped Westminster Cathedral home of the Roman Catholic Church in the UK. Don t forget to take in views across the river too! 2. St James s Park The ideal place to stop for a drink or snack in the lovely park café, aptly named Inn the Park! 3. Buckingham Palace The official residence of the Queen of England, Buckingham Palace sits at the end of The Mall on the edge of St. James s Park. Look out for the Royal Standard flag if it s raised then the Queen is at home! Don t miss the Changing of the Guard ceremony at daily (subject to change). 4. St James Palace Built between 1531 and 1536, St. James s Palace was a residence of kings and queens of England for over 300 years. It remains the official residence of the Sovereign, although, since the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837, the Sovereign has lived at Buckingham Palace. The palace was built by Henry VIII and has been the site of many notable historic occasions. Henry VIII s second wife, Anne Boleyn, stayed there the night after her coronation and Elizabeth I was resident during the threat posed by the Spanish Armada. THE WESTMINSTER WALK 5. Piccadilly Home to the famous Royal Academy of Arts and Fortnum & Mason, this wealthy street is also home to many stores and historic arcades lined with speciality shops and restaurants. Burlington Arcade is the most famous and opened in It is the longest covered shopping street in Britain and is protected by the Beadles liveried guards wearing traditional Edwardian frock coats and top hats. Feel free to stop by and test their London knowledge as you browse! 6. Trafalgar Square In the centre of the Square stands Nelson s Column, at 170 feet tall which was erected to commemorate Admiral Nelson. Buildings surrounding the Square include South Africa House, Canada House, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and St Martin-in-the-Fields Church. 7. Whitehall & 10 Downing Street Whitehall leads back to your starting point at Parliament Square but there are many things to see before you finish! The first main building on this walk along Whitehall is Banqueting House, on your left. It was built in 1622 and is the only remaining part of the Palace of Whitehall. On your right just after Banqueting House, is Horse Guards which is a great location for some holiday snaps! Further down on your right behind a heavily guarded gate, Downing Street is the official prime ministerial residence and Number 10 has been the official residence for the position since 1732.

14 26 27 DISCOVER THE CITY The City might be London s financial hotspot where many important deals happen on a daily basis, but it is also filled with some of London s most historic sites. Take some time out to explore this fascinating area. 1. The Monument The Monument stands as a memorial to the Great Fire of London which started in It was designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in It is the tallest single stone column in the world and contains a spiral staircase leading to a viewing platform from which you can see some remarkable views of the city. 2. Leadenhall Market An unexpectedly opulent undercover market hidden behind the businesslike exterior of Gracechurch Street, the market is a beautiful Victorian structure filled with interesting shops and restaurants. 3. Mansion House / The Bank of England Mansion House is a combination of palace, town hall and law court complete with its own lock-up. Its prime role is the official residence of the City s Lord Mayor, who holds office for a one year term. The Bank of England was established in 1694 to raise money for war and moved to its present location in It is commonly known as The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street. 4. The Guildhall The Guildhall has been used as a town hall for several hundred years, and is still the ceremonial and administrative centre of the City of London and its Corporation. St Mary le Bow Bow bells are probably the most famous in the world and for many hundreds of years have been woven into the folklore of the City of London. In 1392 Dick Whittington heard Bow bells call him back to London to become Lord Mayor. Nowadays, to be born within the sound of Bow bells is the sign of a true Londoner or Cockney.
