Übung 3: Compound Nouns German compound nouns (a combination of two or more) can sometimes be quite long. However, when you take apart a compound noun you can easily figure out the meaning of the complete word, since it is the sum of its parts. Use the example below to figure out what these compound words mean in English. First, break the word down to its German simple noun components, then give the English translation of the simple nouns. Finally put these altogether to make an English translation of the larger word and list the article of the compound noun. Beispiel: Stadtautobahnbrücke German components: Stadt, Auto, Bahn, Brücke English components: city, car, path, bridge English translation: city highway bridge Article: die Hint: the last noun in a compound determines the article (die Stadtautobahnbrücke = die Brücke), most of the simple nouns can be found in your glossary 1. 3 Übung 4: The Command Form There are basically three command forms, the familiar singular and the plural forms (du, ihr), and the formal or polite command form of both singular and plural (Sie). a) The familiar singular or du command form is constructed by eliminating the st or t from the du-form and by maintaining the stem. du-form Command du-form Command Beispiele: geh(st) Geh! (go!) schreib(st) Schreib! (write!) iss(t) Iss! (eat!) lies(t) Lies! (read!) b) The familiar plural or ihr command form is used when you address more than one person and is identical to the ihr form for regular verbs: Beispiel: Macht die Hausaufgaben, Katrin und Willi! c) The polite or Sie command is formed by inverting subject and verb. Beispiele: Rufen Sie uns später an, Herr Werner! Sprechen Sie Deutsch, bitte! The verb sein (to be): always the exception The command forms of the verb to be are as follows: sei (familiar singular), seid (familiar plural) and seien (polite). Beispiele: Gertrude, sei geduldig! Gertrude, be patient! Joachim und Anne, seid pünktlich! Joachim und Anne, be punctual! Herr K is discussing a field trip that he is planning with his students.
