Dr. Rahel Schomaker Wirtschaftspolitisches Seminar Current Developments in Germany and the European Union against the Backdrop of the Debt Crisis Syllabus Wintersemester 0/03 Wochenstunden: SWS ECTS Credits: 3 Workload: 75 SWS, 5 x = 30 SWS Präsenzzeit sowie 45 SWS Eigenstudium Vorlesungstermine: 7./8. and 4./5..0 Vorlesungsbeginn: Niveau: fortgeschrittenes Niveau Grundlagen: Current Developments in Germany and the European Union against the Backdrop of the Debt Crisis The financial and economic crisis, starting in 008/009, and not over by now, hit most of the European Countries, not least Germany, very hard. Severe struggles in the financial markets and the banking system, which could only partly be moated by the national governments, increasing unemployment rates and a raising public deficit are the obvious consequences of the crisis. Current developments in Greece and other (Southern) European countries show that the crisis is still evolving, rising new challenges not only for the countries in the EU, but also the European Union as a whole. In our seminar, we will discuss the consequences and legates of the crisis for Germany, selected European Countries (e.g. Greece) and the European Union as a whole. We will see in how far the crisis is un control, which mechanisms have been employed by the European Union and how they worked out. Furthermore, we will analyze what the role of the state is and which kind of economic and fiscal policy will be suitable to cope with the consequences of this crisis and if they will avoid or at least moate similar crises in the future.
