English Matters Arbeitsheft zu Volkswirtschaftslehre Lernt gemeinsam handeln! von Heidrun Peters unter Mitarbeit der Verlagsredaktion
Preface Dear Student, You have decided to take part in bilingual classes in Economics because you know that English matters in a globalized world. You are lucky that your college offers these courses and you are among the first students working with the brand new English Matters, the English workbook exactly matching the German textbook Volkswirtschaftslehre Lernt gemeinsam handeln! You have found the only two matching books for bilingual classes in Economics in German and English. The aim of this workbook is to help improve your command of English in Economics. Once you have acquired a basic vocabulary in Economics you will notice that English texts about Factors of Production, The Circular Flow of Economic Activities, Markets and Prices, Money and Economic Objectives, Policies and Systems are quite easy to understand. Sometimes you might even prefer the English to the German texts. Less technical terms are used in English and the sentences are less complex. You have plenty of opportunities to learn this yourself when you are working with English Matters and Volkswirtschaftslehre Lernt gemeinsam handeln! In the beginning you (and your teacher) might prefer to study a certain topic first in German and then deepen your knowledge in English. Later on you might like to read the English introductory text first, for example the text about London Markets on page 49 relating to the topic Markets and Prices on page 161 in your German textbook. All texts in this workbook have been written by native speakers and are closely linked to the texts in the German textbook Volkswirtschaftslehre Lernt gemeinsam handeln! This icon in your German textbook tells you when to find a matching text or exercise in your English workbook. Next to this icon in your workbook you will find the relevant page and chapter of your German textbook. Apart from class discussions, team and group work, role plays and tasks for deepening your knowledge you are encouraged throughout the workbook to research further information on the Internet and to present your findings in many different ways. The mix of controlled exercises and more open-ended, creative tasks is designed not only to improve your English but also to encourage you to think about the topics covered in the German textbook as well as in the English workbook. Hopefully, your new workbook English Matters will not just be work but also fun. On the following pages you will learn a lot about your personal wants and needs as well as about means to satisfy them. You will find out why only 2 % of the total labour force works in basic production in the USA, but 23 % do so in Brazil and 81 % in Nepal. The workbook will also tell you how tourism supports the British economy and what market structure has to do with long distance runners. You might wonder what the dream of the Pharaoh has to do with business fluctuations and economic objectives and in how far this workbook can help you to deal with money a topic most important to you and me. Last but not least, you can enjoy working with English Matters autonomously even without the German textbook once you have acquired some knowledge in a monolingual German course in Economics. The topics and texts in this workbook are sequenced according to German curricula in Economics but they can be dealt with separately. They are an ideal supplement for courses in English at commercial colleges. Heidrun Peters, July 2013 33313 3
