EDITORIAL BERLIN MUSIC WEEK BERLIN MUSIC WEEK, 3. 7. SEPT. 2014 Dear guests, Welcome to the 5th Berlin Music Week! We re looking forward to sharing with you this new and constantly evolving event, which has become an indispensable part of the Berlin music scene. We would like to thank you for wanting to be part of it and for taking an interest in our work, which has been made possible by our fantastic team within Germany and abroad. We can guarantee that you won t just have a huge amount of fun, you re sure to also take away lasting impressions and inspiration for your future work. In the true spirit of this city, we ve taken the soundtrack of the movie everything was better in the old days and tossed it in the bin. Instead, we set out to look for forgive the megalomania, it s part of it all the future of music. We found what we were looking for in the hundreds of artists who applied for the Berlin Music Week. They will be hitting our stages at the award shows, the showcase festival First We Take Berlin, and the Berlin Festival, as well as on trucks, rooftops or in the streets for the new First We Take the Streets. We also found the future of music in another kind of band the startup companies that are bringing change and innovation to the music industry, opening up new possibilities. After last year s successful premiere, we will be presenting the Music Start Up Corner 2014 featuring the best international business ideas. The Music Hack Day is going to create the kind of momentum that can be found somewhere between ingenuity and secret science. The new major players of the music industry will be part of it, as they share our aspiration to hack out new ideas during the Berlin Music Week. The future is also in the hands of the recorded industry, which has played a prominent and increasingly international role during the Indie Days at the Berlin Music Week. Despite the financial challenges faced in the last few years, the industry remains a motor of innovation, helping to encourage young artists, develop talent and create digital marketing channels. This is partly how our slogan Music Released came about after all, music has been, and continues to be, released. Plus, music is breaking away from its physical constraints, with all of the risks and opportunities that this process involves. This 5th Berlin Music Week is actually going to be the last of its kind. The project is to be handed over to the Musicboard Berlin for a new beginning. While it s easy to start feeling a sense of regret when it comes to difficult decisions like this one, it s important to remember that every end is a new beginning. We would like to wish the Berlin Music Week all the very best for the future, and wish you, our guests, a terrific time in Berlin! 4

EDITORIAL VUT INDIE DAYS VUT INDIE DAYS The VUT INDIE DAYS have already established themselves as Germany s essential event for recorded music. For three days, Postbahnhof Berlin will become a meeting place for the entire independent music industry offering great opportunities to connect with German and international independent companies. The VUT Indie Days are for the second time part of Berlin Music Week and encompass a broad range of events: Committees and plenums will be meeting internally under the heading PARLIAMENT on 3 September. The panels and presentations as part of the WORD! conference will cover relevant topics and current challenges for independents. Keynotes by internationally renowned speakers of the independent music industry are also part of the program as well as interactive parts like the matching sessions and workshops, which will bring together music companies. Additionally, VUT members will be part of the PRODUCT MARKET of Berlin Music Week and will present their products in the B2B section of Postbahnhof. The events are symbiotically linked with those of the other partners of Berlin Music Week; their planning was closely coordinated and all activities on 4 and 5 September 2014 in Postbahnhof are open without restrictions to all delegates. Last but certainly not least: After the successful premiere of the VIA! VUT INDIE AWARDS last year, VUT will once again celebrate independent artists and companies. On the evening of 5 September, the VIA! VUT INDIE AWARDS will be awarded in six categories based on quality and not on sales figures. Last year Otto Normal (Best Newcomer), Modeselektor (Best Experiment), DJ Koze (Best Album), City Slang (Best Label) and Kid Kopphausen (Best Act) won an award. If you want to know this year s winners, just come to the award show! 5

SERVICES PARKING Special parking rates in the o2 World car park. Berlin Music Week trade visitors can use the o2 World car park for 5 euros per day. This offer is valid from September 3-5 2014. To receive these special rates, a delegate badge must be shown when paying at the office at the main entrance of the car park. It is not necessary to use the pay stations. The car park office is open between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm, the car park is open 24 hours. For all other visitors, the normal rate applies (2 euros per hour, with a maximum of 30 euros daily). He will also talk about Merlin in general and illustrate the future developments in an everchanging market. Merlin clearly represents the most valuable basket of recorded music rights outside of the three major labels, reflecting a share in excess of 10% of the global and US digital music markets, with much higher shares in markets where English is not the first language, reflecting the importance of independent investment in domestic repertoire around the globe. Ein immer kleinteiliger Flickenteppich an Urteilen muss seit Jahren zusammenhalten, was die Digitalisierung vom guten, alten Urheberrecht übrig gelassen hat. Der Ruf nach Reformen ist groß, nicht nur wenn es um das Urheberrecht geht. Nach Jahren des Beobachtens aus der Deckung scheint der Gesetzgeber aufgewacht zu sein. Die Europäische Kommission hat 2014 eine Richtlinie erlassen und macht den Verwertungsgesellschaften neue Vorgaben. Demnächst wird ebenfalls von der Europäischen Kommission ein Weißbuch veröffentlicht, das den gesetzgeberischen Weg im Urheberrecht vorzeichnen wird. Die Bundesregierung will sich konkret mit dem Haftungsrahmen der Provider auseinandersetzen und ein Gesetz erarbeiten, das offene Rechtsfragen um die WLAN-Haftung abschließend beantworten soll. Zuletzt hat der Europäische Gerichtshof eine Reihe wegweisender Urteile gesprochen und weitere Orientierung geliefert. Nachdem in 2012 erstmals wieder eine Million Schallplatten in Deutschland abgesetzt wurden, steigerte sich die Anzahl in 2013 sogar auf 1,4 Millionen Stück. Das markiert den höchsten Stand seit 1992. Immer mehr Künstler bringen ihre neuen Songs auch auf Vinyl raus. Fans sehen in der Schallplatte nicht nur den Sammlerwert sondern verstehen sie als wertvolles Gesamtkunstwerk mit ihrem Cover und Artwork. Im Gegensatz zu einer CD ist eine Vinylscheibe zudem haltbarer und sicherer, subjektiv gesehen auch weicher und wärmer im Klang. ARTIST SUPPORT I In the past years, pop culture has received increased attention by public culture funding bodies. Many musicians today search for funding opportunities (public and private money) to finance their next album or tour, rather than relying entirely on the market. In some cases, e.g. Zoolabs or RBMA, private money flows into training or publicity for upcoming artists. In this panel, we bring together three innovative thinkers on artist support to share their visions and experiences on how best to go about helping musicians in the current economic and cultural settings. Is it about building and supporting infrastructures or providing equipment, do artists need training and mentoring, or should we establish musician residencies (as in the fine arts)? How do we allow for artists time to create great pop music low cost of living, increased entrepreneurial skills, a monthly stipend, or access to networks of collaborators? And do different forms of support make sense at different times in an artist s career? How can future artist support programmes be structured, and which gaps need to be addressed? This learningby-doing in a social environment as well as sharing and re-using of musical ideas happens outside of the existing boundaries. If this will bring more joy and a bigger individual fulfillment then listening to ready-made music, why should we buy or sell music in the future? This leads to a disruption of the music creation and selling business model. But making music with anything and connecting creativity to all these new sensors should be open to everybody. While MusicTechFest brings together the pioneers, an easy-to-use technology platform should enable every creative person to use technology and tools, in the future music fab labs. And what are the implications for music businesses and their success? Do we really need measures to increase diversity or are they redundant?
