Sie besitzen je eine konkave und konvexe Oberfläche wodurch der relevante Abbildungsfehler, die sphärische Aberation, verringert wird. Insbesondere bei kurzen Brennweiten ist der erreichbare Fokusdurchmesser kleiner als bei einer entsprechenden Plankonvexlinse. Da die Linse häufig als Abschluss des Überdruckbereichs im Schneidkopf dient, ergeben sich Anforderungen an die benötigte Randdicke und an die daraus resultierende maximale Druckbelastung.
