I was wondering if you could give your expert opinion on a pressed glass bottle offered on Ebay. The seller claims it was made in England for the Islamic market. It has all these marvelous colors. I would be iterated but don't know enough about glass to make an informed decision. SG: Hello Jaap, the most important information is the impressed Registration Number 208578 which proves that this bottle was made in England 1893. But I could not find this registration number, the year 1893 is correct. The maker is not in the lists, possibly the number was not registered for glass but for a trader / exporter of this glass. The bottle is blown in a form with compressed air (not with the power of a lung) with glass in the colour of amber, the design is sharply made and at last painted - this was not done with particular care. I do think that this design was not inspired by Islamic examples and the form is not special for hookahs like such bottles made in France by Portieux about 1900 as narguiles. or carabasses Look for the picture of a catalouge of Portieux from 1894 with carabasses... The crude painting could have been made by an owner - not in the glass work. When I compare porcelain from Turkey the painting is better than anywhere in Europe at that time and I think that it was the same with Persia or Morocco... this bottle was probably painted by one of its possessors in England, this bottle was never in the orient and the pattern and these colours are not typical for the orient! look for Abb. 2001-05/556, Musterbuch Portieux 1894, Planche 219, Articles divers, Narguilés [Wasserpfeifen], Carabasses All lists of Registration numbers for glass makers in the year 1893 have gaps between 208112, Schindler & Co, 208367, Matthew Turnbull, 208600, Saunders & Shepherd, and 208658, Saunders & Shepherd!
