D une manière spécifique, il doit résister au gel (ISO 10545/12), aux chocs thermiques (ISO 10545/9), à l attaque acide et basique (ISO 10545/13), posséder une valeur d absorption de l eau (ISO 10545/3) inférieure à 0,05%, offrir une résistance à la flexion (ISO 10545/4) égale ou supérieure à 58N/mm 2, présenter une valeur de volume de matériel enlevé égale ou inférieure à 115 mm 3 si soumis à l épreuve de résistance à l abrasion profonde (ISO 10545/6), ne pas être susceptible d être taché par des agents salissants alimentaires selon CTI-81-7 (Ceramic Tile Institute, USA). En général, toutes les caractéristiques techniques doivent être contrôlées sur la base de méthodes d épreuve vérifiées dans le respect de la norme ISO 9001. Les carreaux doivent donc être exempts de microcavités passantes et, s ils sont soumis à une très forte usure (correspondant au moins à une abrasion obtenue avec 6000 tours de machine d épreuve P.E.I.) ils devront conserver leurs caractéristiques de nettoyage facile et parfait de sorte qu il soit possible de nettoyer complètement des taches de feutre à encre (type Shachihata Artline HP).
