LIEBE FREUN R KUNST UND R ART.FAIR, Zum zehnten Mal zeigt die ART.FAIR im November 2012 Kunst aus Gegenwart und Moderne. Zehn Jahre sind ein langer Weg, auf dem sich das Gesicht der ART.FAIR in vielerlei Hinsicht gewandelt hat. Einige Stationen im Zeitraffer: Im Kölner Kunstherbst 2003 startet die ART.FAIR als Off-Show für aktuelle Kunst im rechtsrheinischen Palladium mit 56 internationalen Ausstellern und 10.000 Besuchern. Zweimal wechselt danach der Schauplatz: Nach den ersten beiden Ausgaben geht es 2005 in das EXPO-Gelände nördlich des Doms, und seit 2010 bespielen ART.FAIR und BLOOOM das historische Staatenhaus am Rheinpark gleich neben dem Messegelände. Jedes Mal bringt der veränderte Rahmen auch erweiterte Spielräume für neue Ideen. Heute begehen wir unser Jubiläum mit rund 85 Galerien aus 13 Ländern sowie etwa dreißig Teilnehmern der BLOOOM wir erwarten abermals mehr als 32.000 Besucher. Damit sind aber nur äußere Daten genannt. Die schrittweise Ex - pansion ist Konsequenz des Erfolgs unserer Aussteller und Ermutigung, auf unserem Weg weiterzugehen. Doch ist quantitatives Wachstum nicht das Entscheidende an diesen zehn Jahren. Vielmehr erwachsen die wichtigsten Veränderungen gerade aus dem, was die ART.FAIR zu dem macht, was sie ist: Neugier auf das, was Kunst heute ist. Einer Messe, deren Interesse den vielen Gesichtern der Kunst in der Gegenwart gilt, muss Stillstand somit wohl fremd sein. Was macht Kunst heute aus? Eine erste Veränderung betrifft den Ausschnitt, in dem sich Kunst auf der ART.FAIR zeigt. Gegründet wurde sie als Messe ausschließlich für Kunst aus den letzten Jahren. In ihr soll der Besucher seine eigene Gegenwart künstlerisch reflektiert finden. Lag dabei auch stets ein Schwerpunkt auf jun - gen Positionen, so stand doch seit Beginn die Aktualität der Werke im Vordergrund, nicht das Alter der Künstler. Die Arbeit von Künstlern verschiedener Generationen, von jungen und älteren, von bekannten und noch zu entdeckenden Künstlern, von Künstlern beim Aufbruch in Neuland, wie von Künstlern, die schon seit langem auf ihren vielfältigen Erkundungswegen den Raum der Kunst vermessen und sich in den zeitgenössischen Kanon eingetragen haben all das bestimmt das Bild der Kunst in der Gegenwart. Auch auf der ART.FAIR. Der Blick auf die Gegenwart führt jedoch auch über diese hinaus. Denn unübersehbar gewinnt in den letzten Jahren gerade für eine junge Künstlergeneration die Auseinandersetzung mit jenen Strömungen und Fragestellungen, Themen und Formfindungen, welche die Kunst»vor ihrer Zeit«maßgeblich bestimmte, zunehmend an Bedeutung. Auf diese Neuaneignung der Vergangenheit unter den Vorzeichen der Gegenwart reagiert die ART.FAIR, indem sie sich seit einigen Jahren konsequent der Moderne öffnet. Die qualitativen Referenzpunkte aktueller künstlerischer Arbeit in der Kunst des letzten Jahrhunderts sollen in einer Messe, deren Fokus auf der Kunst in der Gegenwart liegt, zu sehen sein. Aus der ART. FAIR 21 ist die ART.FAIR Messe für moderne und aktuelle Kunst geworden. Zur ART.FAIR gehört ein gewisser Style, eine unprätentiöse Atmosphäre, die auch vor Kunst höchster Qualität keine hohen Schwellen errichtet. Die ART.FAIR wollte vor zehn Jahren bewusst über den inner circle des etablierten Kunstmilieus hinaus der Kunst ein neues, auch jüngeres Publikum erschließen. Frische Kunst junger Künstler für eine nachwachsende Generation von Kunstenthu - si as ten und Sammlern. Dieses Ziel wurde erreicht. Längst ist die im ersten Jahr noch geltende Preisobergrenze von 5.000 Euro hin fällig, um Lust am Kunstkauf zu wecken und den Einstieg in ein Leben als Sammler zu ermöglichen auch Werke im fünf- bis sechsstelligen Eurobereich finden hier inzwischen ihre Käufer. Längst zieht die ART.FAIR als drittgrößte deutsche Kunstmesse ein fachlich versiertes und auch auf den anderen Schauplätzen des Kunst betriebs erfahrenes Publikum an. Doch sind unter den Sammlern, die Herbst für Herbst auf der ART.FAIR zusammenfinden, so manche, die hier in den letzten zehn Jahren zu moderaten Preisen ihr erstes Original werk erworben haben. Dass dies weiterhin möglich bleibt, auch das macht die ART.FAIR aus. Die doppelte Ausrichtung auf die nachwachsenden Ressourcen sowohl in der Kunst als auch beim Kunstpublikum dieser Geschich - te wollen wir weitere Kapitel hinzufügen. Zur ART.FAIR gehört das beharrliche Engagement für die aktuelle Kunstproduktion und deren Themen, für neue Medien und experimentelle Suchbewegungen der Kunst. 2005 war die New Yorker DiVA DIGITAL & VIO ART FAIR Gast der ART.FAIR. Junge Projekte bildender Künstler, aber auch aus Musik, Tanz, Performance, Urban Art, Light Art oder Mode hatten stets ihren Platz, zunächst außerhalb des regulären Galerieprogramms. 2010 dann bekamen diese grenzübergreifenden Projekte mit der BLOOOM the converging art show. eine eigenständige Plattform unter dem Dach der ART.FAIR. Als international erste Messe zum Thema Konvergenz widmet sich die BLOOOM relevanten, genuin künstlerischen Entwicklungen und bietet die Möglichkeit, Grenzbereiche der Kunst zu erleben. Bereiche, die teilweise erst durch neueste technische Entwicklungen, besonders der elektronischen und digitalen Medien, erschlossen wurden. Die Veränderungen von Sehgewohnheiten und Wahrnehmungsmustern sind also klassische Themen der zeitgenössischen Kunst: Wenn die»äußere«realität sich als imprägniert von technisch erzeugten und reproduzierten Bilderfluten präsentiert, eine Welt als Ensemble einander durchdringender Bildwelten, dann kann die Frage nach dem künstlerischen Bild nicht mehr nur im Rekurs auf kunstimmanente Bildtraditionen beantwortet werden. Diese kontinuierlichen Transformationen und die damit verbundene künstlerische Auseinandersetzung ist eingebettet in unsere Lebenswelt. Das bedeutet, auch Kunst muss ständig neue Wege suchen und Grenzen überschreiten. Hier setzt die BLOOOM an: Sie will diesen hybriden Formen künstlerischer Weltaneignung eine Plattform bieten und sie dabei begleiten, wenn sie unter den Bedingungen einer dynamisierten und ikonisch aufgeladenen Ge - genwart ihre Selbstbestimmung klassisch formuliert: ihre Autonomie vollziehen. Mit der BLOOOM verbindet sich die Förderung des künstlerischen Nachwuchses in einer Form, die ohne die Unterstützung unseres Sponsors WARSTEINER nicht möglich wäre. Zum dritten Mal prä - miert der BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER innovative und interdisziplinäre Projekte junger Künstler aus allen Gattungen und Medien. Unter mehr als 800 Bewerbungen aus 29 Nationen auf sechs Kontinenten wählte eine Fachjury zehn Finalisten aus, deren Arbeiten in einer Sonderausstellung auf der BLOOOM zu sehen sind. Erstmalig bot zudem im Mai 2012 die BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER Tour, in Verbindung mit einer Ausstellung der Finalisten des Jahres 2011, in Köln, Hamburg und Berlin jungen Künstlern die Chance zu Coaching-Gesprächen. Was also erzählen die letzten zehn Jahre über der ART.FAIR? Was prägt ihr Profil? Das fortgesetzte Interesse am aktuellen state of art; daran, welche Themen und Techniken, Motive und Medien, Traditionen und Innovationen die Kunst in der Gegenwart bestimmen. Die Bevorzugung des großen Bogens, eines spannungsreichen Gegenübers von Alt und Neu statt eines homogenen Um - felds, in dem das Bewährte und das Experimentelle einander nicht begegneten. Das Fruchtbarmachen von Grenzen als Kontrast und überraschende Nachbarschaft. Und schließlich die Erfahrung, dass das kontinuierliche Befragen der Gegenwartskunst keine Antworten erlaubt, die ein für allemal gelten; dass Kontinuität sich hier darin bewährt, die Untersuchung der Gegenwart jedes Jahr aufs Neue zu beginnen. Insofern ist auch für uns, die Veranstalter der ART.FAIR, jedes Jahr ein neuer Anfang, der bei aller Freude am schon Gelungenen und Vertrauten ins Unerwartete führt. Zehn Jahre bedeuten für eine Kunstmesse, sich zehnmal neu zu definieren. Aber sie tut dies nie allein. Vielmehr ist es gerade das Zusammenwirken unseres ganzen Teams mit den Galerien, den Künstlern, das Aufnehmen unerwarteter Impulse und die Aufmerksamkeit für den Respons der Besucher, woraus der alljährliche Neustart erwächst. Jede Messe ist ein Gemeinschaftsprodukt, an dem viele beteiligt sind. Aufgabe einer Kunstmesse ist es, Situationen zu schaffen, in denen Kunst auf ein ebenso entdeckungsfreudiges wie kaufwilliges Publikum trifft. Verlauf und Ergebnis dieser Begegnung sind unabsehbar. Nichts versteht sich hier von selbst, schon gar nicht in der Kunst. Dass der doppelte Blick auf die Erwartungen des Publikums und auf den Eigensinn der Kunst nicht zum Schielen nach dem Risikolosen und vermeintlich Sicheren gerät, sondern offen bleibt für künftige Wendungen und Aufbrüche, dafür sorgen die Neugier und die Freude an der Kunst, die wir seit zehn Jahren mit unseren Ausstellern und mit unserem Publikum teilen. AR FRIENDS OF ART AND ART.FAIR, For the tenth time ART.FAIR presents modern and contemporary art in November 2012. Over the last ten years, the face of ART.FAIR has transformed it self in many ways. Some stops on our time line: In the Cologne art autumn 2003 ART.FAIR started as an off-show for contemporary art at the Palladium on the east bank of the Rhine with 56 international exhibitors and 10,000 visitors. Since then the venue has changed twice: After the first two years, the fair relo cat ed to the EXPO site north of the Dome in 2005, and since 2010, ART.FAIR and BLOOOM have been based at the historical Staatenhaus am Rheinpark right next to the fair grounds. Each new sett ing has created more space for new ideas. Today we are celebrating our anniversary with some 85 galleries from 13 countries as well as about 30 participants from BLOOOM and we expect more than 32,000 visitors again. But those numbers are only external facts. The gradual expansion is the consequence of the success of our exhibitors and an encouragement to continue on our present course. Besides, quantitative growth is not the bottom line of the last ten years. Instead, the most essential change has grown out of what makes ART.FAIR what it is: the curiosity about what art is, nowadays. Hence, to a fair, which is interested in the many facets of contemporary art, stagnancy is not an option. What is art today? The first point concerns the focus, in which art is presented at ART.FAIR. It was founded as a fair exclusively for art of the recent years in which the visitors should find their own presence reflected in an artistic way. There has always been an emphasis on young artists, yet, the timeliness of the works and not the age of the artist has been put in the focus since the beginning. The work of artists of different generations, from young and old, known and still undiscovered artists, to artists at the start of new frontiers and artists, who have already left a footprint in the manifold space of contemporary art for a long time all that defines the picture of contemporary art. Also at the ART.FAIR. The perspective on the present, however, leads beyond it. Notably in recent years, a younger generation of artists have been dealing with those trends and issues, topics and form-findings which the»before their time«art has been significantly defined. ART.FAIR responds to this re-adoption of the past under the sign of the present by consequently opening up to modern art. The qualitative reference points of current artistic work in the art of the last century is aimed to be recognized in a fair where the focus is on contemporary art. ART.FAIR 21 has transformed into ART.FAIR Fair for modern and contemporary art. ART.FAIR represents a certain style in an unpretentious atmosphere, which does not stop at art of the highest quality. Ten years ago, ART.FAIR aimed to specifically open up art to a younger audience far beyond the inner circle of the established art milieu. Fresh art by young artists for a younger generation of art enthusiasts and collectors. This ambition has been fulfilled. Price limits of 5,000 EUR in the first year, in order to raise the desire to purchase art and allow an easier entry into the life of a collector, are now obsolete by now works in a five- to six-figure euro range find their buyers as well. Today ART.FAIR is the third largest German art fair and as such attracts a versed and in the broad art scene experienced audience. Still, some of the collectors, who come together for ART.FAIR each autumn, have purchased their first original work at moderate prices in the last ten years. That this will still be possible is also characteristic of ART.FAIR. The dual focus on renewable resources, both in art and among the art audience that is the story we want to add further chapters to. ART.FAIR is known for its persistent commitment to the current art production and its themes, to new media and experimental search movements. In 2005, the New Yorker DiVA DIGI- TAL & VIO ART FAIR performed at ART.FAIR. Young projects of visual artists, but also music, dance, performance art, urban art, light art and fashion have always had their place at the fair, initially outside the regular gallery program. In 2010, these cross-border projects then received an independent platform with BLOOOM the converging art show. under the umbrella of ART.FAIR. As the first international fair on the topic of convergence, BLOOOM is dedicated to relevant, genuinely artistic developments and offers the opportunity to experience the border areas and the edge of art. Areas that were partly only made possible through latest technical developments, especial - ly within the electronic and digital media. Thus, changes in the viewing habits and perceptual patterns are classic themes of contemporary art: if the»external«reality pre - sents itself as being impregnated by technically produced and reproduced stream of images, a world as an ensemble of interpenetrating worlds of images, then the question of what an artistic image is, cannot only be answered with recourse to the artimmanent traditional pictures. This continuous transformation and the connected artistic examination of it, is in turn embedded in our world. Consequently art must permanently seek new directions and cross borders. This is BLOOOM s approach: to offer a platform for these hybrid forms of artistic adoption of the world and to accompany them when they, under the conditions of a dynamic and iconically loaded up presence, reach their selfdetermination classically called their autonomy. BLOOOM s commitment to promote young artists would not be possible without the support of our sponsor WARSTEINER. For the third time the BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER grants innovative and interdisciplinary projects by young artists from all genres and media. Among more than 800 applications from 29 countries and six continents, an expert jury chose ten finalists, whose works will be on display in a special exhibition at BLOOOM. In addition, for the first time in May 2012, the BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER Tour showed the work of the 2011 finalists in exhibitions in Cologne, Hamburg and Berlin while additionally giving young artists the chance to attend coaching lessons. So what do the last ten years of ART.FAIR tell us? What shapes its profile? The continued interest in the current state of art, from determining themes and techniques, motives and media, traditions and innovations of the present day art. The preference for the big range, the exciting opposite of old and new, instead of a homogeneous environment in which the established and the experimental do not meet each other. A fruitful border as a contrast and surprisingly close proximity. And finally the experience that the continuous questioning of contemporary art does not allow answers to apply to all; that continuity grows out of the new investigation of the present each year. In this respect, even to us, the organizers of ART.FAIR, every year is a new beginning, which despite from all the joy of the past success and confidence leads to the unexpected. Ten years mean ten new times for an art fair to define itself. But it can not do so only by itself. Rather, it is precisely the collaboration of our entire team with the galleries, the artists, capturing unexpected impulses and the attention of the response of the visitors, from which the annual reboot grows. Each fair is a joint product, where many are involved. The mission of an art fair is to create situations where art meets an audience that is equally full of joyful discovery and a willingness to buy. The progress and outcome of this encounter are incalculable. Nothing is predictable, especially not with art. That the double-sided view onto the expectations of the audience on the one hand and the obstinacy of the art on the other, does not lead to being cross-eyed on either the risk or the supposedly security of art, but remains open for future twists and rises, it is secured by the curiosity and joy of art, which we have been sharing with our exhibitors and our audience for ten years. It is a huge constructivist globe, 6-metres in diameter, made from 100 recycled satellite dishes painted in different colors. Video portraits and news broadcasts are projected onto many of these satellite dishes, including one video filmed live at the fair by Martí, in which she will interview visitors, artists, gallery owners and other protagonists.»this creates a dynamic network of transmissions, expressing a variety of inner beliefs, political thought, fears, love and hope, using imagery, words and music,«says Martí.»It is about crossing frontiers to record how we truly feel. The models I have filmed in my videos include a cabaret singer from Paris, a Rome-based Australian curator, a Dutch actress, a museum director from Jordan, a Swedish psychiatrist, an Iraqi artist and a Spanish prisoner. They each tell their own stories about where they see themselves in the world of today. It is not important what language they speak, it is the way how they express themselves with honesty. Martí transfers visual imagery onto industrial objects purposely designed to be anonymous and monochrome. She gives new life to massproduced symbols of communication.
