That's how we started, but being inexperienced and naïve, our first recording project fell short of expectations, and was never released. In 1988, Keith Johnson recorded this CD to be sold exclusively at St. Mary's Cathedral. Reference Recordings has now secured rights to issue it in a newly-remastrered HDCD edition with superior graphics and entirely new music notes. Hear some of the most spectacular organ music ever written, brilliantly played on a huge Ruffatti instrument in a superb acoustical environment - popular favorites and more than a few rarities. The late John Balka, one of the most exciting performers of his generation, was organist and Director of Music at St. Mary's Cathedral when this significant recording was made. He was invited to perform at conventions of both the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society. His achievements for musical programming and direction during the 1987 San Francisco visit of Pope John Paul II were highly acclaimed. Der Gitarrist spielt ganz eindeutig südamerikanische Rhythmen und man hört im die Erfahrung von jahrelangen Live-Auftritten an. Unterstützt wird für diese Studio-Aufnahme von einer Truppe von Profi-Musikern mit einem geradezu gespenstischen Gefühl für Timing. Vielleicht liegt das an der Präsenz von Altmeister Jim Brock an den Percussion-Instrumenten. Die Aufnahme entstand im Februar 2011 in den Reflection Sound Studios in Charlotte und Jim Brock war tatsächlich als Produzent beteiligt, während Reference Recordings sich um die Aufnahmetechnik in 24 Bit kümmerte. Galop Final Der Franzose Leo Delibes schrieb die beiden Opern Sylvia (1870) und Coppélia (1876) explizit für Ballettaufführungen mit einem kompletten symphonischen Orchester und beschritt damit Neuland für das damalige Verständnis von Ballettmusik. In Sylvia findet sich sogar bereits das bis heute in symphonischen Werken ungewöhnliche Saxophon. Leo Delibes Zeitgenosse Tchaikovsky kommentierte, dass er sich nie getraut hätte den Schwanensee zu schreiben, wäre ihm Sylvia bereits bekannt gewesen. Wie man dies bei einer Reference-Recordings-Aufnahme erwarten darf, ist sie opulent gelungen und Keith Johnson gibt dem Zuhörer das Gefühl, in der Mitte eines großen Konzertsaals zu sitzen. Eine akustische Illusion, die umso beeindruckender ist, da die Aufnahme bei Skywalker Sound im Studio und eben nicht in einem klassischen Konzertsaal entstand. HDCD RR 118 ENSEMBLE BAROQUE NOUVEAU Rameau: Pièces de clavecin en concerts KLASSIK Im Jahre 1741 veröffentlichte der Franzose Jean-Philippe Rameau fünf Konzerte für Cembalo in denen der den Begleitmusikern auf Violine, Flöte und Gamba deutlich mehr Freiraum gab, als es für ihre ursprünglich begleitende Rolle notwendig wäre. Für die Gamba ließ er sogar technisch unmögliche Noten einfließen. Eine Aufforderung an die Musiker in gemeinsamer Kommunikation mit dieser Herausforderung umzugehen. Die Truppe von Baroque Noeveau nimmt diese Herausforderung an. Passend zur damaligen Art Musik zu machen, in der die Musiker gemeinsam hinter dem Cembalo standen und alle aus der Partitur des Cembalisten lesen konnten, reicht ein Nicken, um eine Variation oder Improvisation vorzunehmen. Unter den glänzenden akustischen Bedingungen der Skywalker Studios in Kalifornien spielt das Quartett auf teilweise historischen Instrumenten. Der aus einer Mecklenburger Familie stammende Leon Bismark Beiderbecke (oder kurz Bix) war ein musikalischer Autodidakt und spielte bereits mit vier Jahren nach Gehör Klavier und wählte später das Kornett als Instrument der Wahl. Seine jahrelange Weigerung sich mit Noten zu befassen und die Ermangelung einer richtigen musikalischen Ausbildung führten zu sehr ungewöhnlichen Griffen an die Ventile des Instrumentes, die man heute als "False-Fingering" bezeichnet und für Seite 5

Kaum ein anderes Orchester könnte sich den Werken des australischen Musikers und Komponisten mit einer Vorliebe für alternative Instrumentierungen so eindrucksvoll widmen. 12 HDCD RR 120 REFERENCE RECORDINGS STERN, MICHAEL & KANSAS CITY SYMPHONY Britten's Orchestra Kammermusik Dies ist das zweite Werk welches "Prof." Johnson von der Kansas City Symphony aufnimmt und dieses Mal hat man sich mit dem Community of Christ Auditorium in Independence, Missouri einen spektakulären Ort für den gleichfalls spektakulären Klang des Orchesters ausgesucht. Drei Werke von Benjamin Britten stehen auf dem Programm und die Wahl viel auf drei sehr unterschiedliche Stücke des wohl bekanntesten britischen Komponisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. The Young Person's Guide to Orchestra wurde als Auftragswerk von Britten mit damals erst 31 Jahren geschrieben. Es sollte die Musik zu einem Dokumentarfilm sein, der die Instrumente eines modernen symphonischen Orchesters vorstellt. Britten bearbeitete hiefür ein Thema von Henry Purcell aus dem Jahr Sowohl im Film als auch in den ersten Orchesteraufführungen gab es noch einen Sprecher, der jedoch mit zunehmender Popularität des Werkes heute nicht mehr auftritt. Das Thema wird zuerst vom gesamten Orchester gespielt und dann in 13 Variationen durch die einzelnen Orchestersegmente interpretiert bevor wieder das gesamte Orchester spielt.
