KG PINE IN GEMANY Messerschmitt f 109 F/4 Messerschmitt f 109 F/4 Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss des Einmarsches in Polen, beschloss man im Frühjahr 1940 seitens des LM die Leistung der mittlerweile in die age gekommenen f 109 E Emil zu verbessern. Man beauftragte das Messerschmitt Konstruktionsteam in Augsburg damit, das esign nach neuesten Erkenntnissen und aerodynamischen Gesichtspunkten zu überarbeiten. Im Mittelpunkt hierfür stand die erwendung des neuen geplanten 601 E Motors welcher mit P eine weit verbesserte Leistungen versprach. er gesamte orderrumpf der als f 109 F Friedrich bezeichneten Maschine wurde umkonstruiert und stromlinienförmiger gestaltet. urch die erwendung einer wesentlich größeren Propellerhaube konnte ein nahtloser Übergang zum umpf geschaffen werden was wiederum der Eleganz der Maschine zugute kam. er Propeller wurde im urchmesser verringert und bekam breitere von M produzierte lätter mit höherem Wirkungsgrad die besonders in großen Höhen ihre volle Wirkung entfalteten. er Ladelufteinlauf erhielt einen kreisrunden Querschnitt für bestmöglichen taueffekt, die Flächenkühler blieben an ihren Positionen wurden aber verbreitert und zusätzlich zur Grenzschichtabsaugung mitbenutzt. as Hauptfahrwerk erhielt eine neue eifengröße von 650x150 mm und das porn- ad konnte nun hydraulisch eingezogen werden. ie bis dahin verstrebten Höhenflossen wurden als freitragendes eil ausgelegt, während die pindel zur Höhenflossentrimmung verkleidet wurde. ie ragflächen bekamen runde Endkappen, welche die pannweite vergrößerte und die Flügelfläche leicht erhöhten. Zudem kamen statt der gewohnten palt-querruder nunmehr Frise-Querruder zum Einsatz und die paltlandeklappen der Emil wurden durch Wölbungsklappen ersetzt. Zusätzlich optimierte man die Abläufe in der Fertigung, so dass die Produktionszeit von austunden für die f 109 E auf tunden bei der f 109 F verringert werden konnte. Ab ezember 1940 begann man bei Messerschmitt in egensburg und in den Wiener-Neustädter-Flugzeugwerken (WNF) mit der Fertigung der f 109 F-1. Im Januar 1941 erfolgte die Auslieferung der ersten erienmaschinen an die Jagdgeschwader JG, JG 6 und JG 51. Nach mehreren schweren nfällen und der erstärkung des inneren Aufbaus des Leitwerks in kürzester Zeit nach ruppeneinführung hatten mehrere Maschinen ihre Leitwerke auf Grund von Materialermüdung durch starke ibration verloren erreichte die f 109 in den Augen vieler ihrer Piloten den Zenit ihrer Leistungsfähigkeit. pätere ersionen verfügten zwar über stärkere Motoren, eine bessere ewaffnung und eine höhere Flugmasse, doch die ausgewogene Abstimmung zwischen Zelle und Motor verliehen der Friedrich die besten Flug- und teuereigenschaften aller f 109 arianten. ie Maschine wurde erfolgreich von 1941 bis 1943 auf allen Kriegsschauplätzen eingesetzte, besonders in Frankreich, Afrika und in ussland sollten ihre hervorragenden Flugeigenschaften zur Wirkung kommen. ie erienfertigung der f 109 F begann im ezember 1940 und endete im Mai 194. Insgesamt wurden über Exemplare der folgenden offiziellen ersionen in erie gebaut: f 109 F-0: 19 orserienmaschinen für die Erprobung der F-erie. f 109 F-1: erienfertigung ab Januar 1941 mit aimler-enz 601 N (1.175 P 100 ktan), zusätzlich war die F-1 mit einem M A Propeller ausgestattet. ie Maschine besaß zwei 7,9 mm MG 17 und eine 0 mm MG FF/M Motorkanone. on dieser ariante wurden etwa 50 Exemplare gebaut. f 109 F-: Großserie ab April 1941 ebenfalls mit aimler-enz 601 N und der technischen Ausrüstung der F-1, lediglich die Motorkanone MG FF/M wurde durch das moderne Mauser MG 151 mit einem Kaliber von 15 mm ersetzt. Zusätzlich erhielt die Maschine die Möglichkeit einen 300 l fassenden Zusatztank oder einer 50 kg prengbombe unter dem umpf an einem EC 500 mitzuführen. ie Ausführung f 109 F-/rop war mit einem andfilter im Ladeluftansaugstutzen und ropennotausrüstung für den Einsatz in Nordafrika entwickelt worden. ie f 109 F-/Z erhielt die GM-1 Einspritzanlage für istickstoffmonoxid (Lachgas) zur kurzzeitigen teigerung der Motorleistung von bis zu 0%. Mehr als Maschinen wurden der ruppe übergeben. f 109 F-3: Grundsätzlich entsprachen die F-3 in der technischen Ausrüstung der f 109 F- ersion, jedoch ausgerüstet mit dem aimler-enz 601 E (1.350 P 87 ktan) und M A Propeller. Aufgrund der wenig überzeugenden Feuerkraft des MG 151/15 wurden die wenigen gebauten F-3 auf F-4 tandard hochgerüstet und erhielten das MG 151/0 als Motorkanone. Es wurden nur etwa 0 Exemplare produziert. f 109 F-4: ie Musterprüfung erfolgte im Mai 1941 in echlin mit erienfertigung beginnend ab Juni Hauptunterschied zur F- war die serienmäßige Ausstattung der Maschine mit aimler-enz 601 E und rehzahlautomatik für die M-Luftschraube M A. Als Motorkanone wurde erstmals das 0 mm MG 151/0 M mit Motorlagerung Mol 151/1 verwendet, die weitere technische Ausrüstung entsprach der f 109 F-. ie Ausführungen F-4/1 und waren als Jagdbomber unter dem umpf mit ombenträgern versehen. ie 1 stattete man mit einem EC 50 0 für eine 50 kg prengbombe aus, während die über einen EC 50 für vier 50 kg prengbomben verfügte. ie F-4/3 bezeichnete die ariante mit abwerfbarem 300 l Zusatztank und Ladedruckluft-enzinförderung. ie F-4/4 war wiederum ein Jabo, ausgestattet mit ostträger 4x4 für treubomben gegen weiche und ungepanzerte Ziele. ie Ausführung f 109 F-4/7 war als schwerer Jäger gedacht, ausgestattet mit zwei zusätzlichen MG 151/0 in Gondeln unter den ragflächen. ie ezeichnung F-4/8 beschrieb die feldmäßige mrüstung der f 109 F-4 als Aufklärer mit eihenbildgeräten und einer, auf zwei 7,9 mm MG 17 reduzierte, ewaffnung. ie f 109 F-4/Z verfügte wie die F-/Z über die GM-1 Einspritzanlage für istickstoffmonoxid, entsprach aber sonst dem tand der F-4. ie F-4/rop verfügte über einen andfilter vor dem Ladelufteinlass und über eine ropenausstattung für den Einsatz in tropischen und staubigen Gegenden wie Nordafrika und üdrussland. ie an der stfront eingesetzten f 109 F-4 erhielten darüber hinaus eine Kaltstartanlage der Fa. Hirth. Mit über Exemplaren stellt die F-4 die meist gebaute ariante der Friedrich dar. chon in der ersten Monaten nach Einführung der f 109 F beschwerte sich eine Anzahl von erfahrenen Piloten, darunter Adolf Galland und Walter esau, über die unzureichende ewaffnung der Friedrich. In ommer 1941 wurden einige F-4 mit MG 17 bzw. MG FF/M als Flügelbewaffnung ausgestattet und sollen die nicht offizielle ezeichnung F-6 erhalten haben. Mit einem dieser Exemplare gelang Adolf Galland am 18. It commissioned the Messerschmitt design team in Augsburg to - from an aerodynamic point of view - review the design using the latest knowledge and perceptions available. he focal point of this was to be the newly planned 601 E engine which promised more performance with its improved 1350bhp power output. he complete front fuselage of the f 109 F Friedrich was rebuilt and took on a more streamlined appearance. y using a larger diameter propeller spinner it was possible to produce an almost unbroken transition to the fuselage which at the same time helped to improve the aircraft's looks. he diameter of the propeller was reduced and wider more efficient M blades that were particularly effective at high altitude were fitted. he charge-air inlet became circular in cross section for the best possible compression effect, the wing radiators retained their position but were widened and used additionally for boundary layer suction. he main undercarriage received a new tyre size (650 x 150 mm) and the tail wheel could now be retracted hydraulically. he braced tailplane was now designed as a self supporting unit and the shaft for the elevator trim was encased. he wings were fitted with rounded tips which slightly increased the wingspan and the wing area. Additionally, instead of the usual slotted aileron - Frise ailerons were fitted and "Emil's" slotted flaps were replaced by plain flaps. Production processes were also optimised so that the 9000 hour production time for the f 109E could be reduced to 6000 hours for the f 109F. In ecember 1940 production of the f 109 F-1 began at Messerschmitt in egensburg and in ienna at the Wiener-Neustadt Flugzeugwerken (WNF). In January 1941 the first production aircraft were delivered to Fighter Wings JG, JG6 and JG51. After several major accidents and reinforcement of the internal structure of the tail (a short time after its introduction to service, several aircraft lost their tail-plains due to material fatigue and strong vibrations) the f 109 had in the eyes of many pilots reached the peak of its performance. Later versions did have more powerful engines, better weapons and a higher all-up-mass, but the balanced fine tuning between the airframe and engine bestowed "Frederick" with the best flight and control characteristics of all the f 109 variants. From 1941 to 1943 the aircraft was used successfully in all theatres of war, but it was in France, Africa and ussia that its superb flight characteristics were used to their best effect. Mass production of the f 109 F began in ecember 1940 and ceased in May 194. F-4/3 designated the variant with an auxiliary 300 litre droppable fuel tank and charge air pressure fuel delivery. he F-4/4 was in turn a fighter-bomber, equipped with a bomb-rack able to carry 4x4 cluster bombs units for use against soft and un-armoured targets. he F-4/7 f 109 version was conceived as a heavy fighter, equipped with two additional MG 151/0 in under-wing pods. he designation F-4/8 described the in theatre conversion of the f 109 F-4 to the reconnaissance role with a range of imaging devices and the armament reduced to two 7.9 mm MG 17 machine guns. As the F-/Z, the f 109 F-4/Z used the GM-1 dinitrogen monoxide injection system, but was otherwise similar to the F-4. he F-4/rop had a sand filter in front of the charge air inlet and tropical equipment for use in tropical and dusty regions such as North Africa and southern ussia. f 109 F-4's used on the Eastern Front also received a "Hirth" cold start unit. With over 1880 units, the F-4, was the most prolific variant of the "Frederick". In the first few months after the f 109 F was introduced to service, many experienced pilots - including Adolf Galland and Walter esau - were already complaining about the Friedrich's inadequate armament. In the summer of 1941, some F-4's were fitted with MG17 or MG FF/M machine guns in the wings. hey were unofficially designated F-6.
