5 Wood fl ooring / laminate underlayment The underlay makes all the difference! Parquet and laminate fl oorings are very popular. They give homes a cosy, homey atmosphere. They can be installed by hand and by DIY hobbyists with ease thanks to the click system. But to ensure proper installation, allowing you to enjoy your fl oor for as long as possible, suitable underlayment are very important. The SELIT range covers a wide variety of underlayment, fi ne-tuned to the specifi c conditions beneath the fl oor and to the specifi c requirements that the fl oor needs to meet. Various quality and price grades are offered. All SELIT underlayment are particularly easy to handle to the benefi t of DIY hobbyists. The 'easy' range of technologies, easy lay, easy click and easy cut, provide for a simple and fast installation of underlayment, fast joining of individual sections and perfect fi tting. They have since their introduction become an established standard in the market place. The necessity of an underlay and the offi cial rules relating to laminate underlayment in force since the end of 2013 will be explained on the following pages. 6 Wood fl ooring / laminate underlayment Expert tips for product selection New standards for evaluating quality Following years of preparation in numerous working groups at the European level (CEN) and within the EPLF, the offi cial rules governing laminate underlayment were published for the fi rst time ever at the end of SELIT was one of the collaborators on these standardisation efforts and was instrumental in putting requirements in place for laminate fl ooring underlayment which will have a very signifi cant impact on fl oor construction overall. Why is laminate underlayment necessary? A laminate fl oor can only function if the underlay functions as a part of the fl ooring system as a whole. The underlay represents the connection between the laminate fl oor and the substrate, and should function in the following ways: Ensure professional installation This includes evening out unevenness and creating a level installation surface so that a fl oating fl oor can be installed properly. Protect the fl oor over time The requirements are aimed at protecting the fl oor from daily wear and tear like falling objects and walking, as well as at shielding the fl oor from rising residual building moisture or damp. Improve the properties of the fl oor In addition to reducing the noise from impact and walking, the underlay also adds heat insulation and walking comfort. What sets of rules exist? Until recently, there were no technical rules that described or standardised laminate underlayment. While some countries have statutory requirements (such as the Ü sign; certifi cation by construction supervision), they only apply to fi re behaviour and emissions rather than setting out performance parameters. By the end of 2013 two applicable sets of rules were established that represent the state of the art: The CEN/TS technical specifi cations This offi cial document of the European Committee addresses all relevant criteria for laminate underlayment and defi nes appropriate binding testing methods to meet these criteria. They are aimed at ensuring that product properties are tested according to a uniform set of criteria. The document may also represent a preliminary step toward the expected European product standard. EPLF technical bulletin The EPLF technical bulletin is based on CEN/TS 16354, supplementing the European document. In addition to the key requirements that a laminate underlay must meet, the bulletin contains explanatory notes and makes specifi c recommendations for technical data. It therefore defi nes minimum requirements that a laminate underlay should meet, but also provides recommendations for higher Associate member requirements. 6

7 Wood fl ooring / laminate underlayment The EPLF technical bulletin details a number of requirements necessary for a laminate underlay. Below is a summary of these points. For every point, you will fi nd a graphic at the bottom that compares the EPLF requirements with the values that several SELIT products already meet. 1. Protecting the floor 2. Improving living comfort unevenness (PC) To protect the fl oor mechanically and prevent local separations, it must be possible to even out small, isolated bumps. Otherwise, the fl oor may be damaged, particularly in transition areas. Impact sound insulation (IS) When the sound of footsteps is transmitted to the room immediately below, the result is generally known as impact sound. This can be achieved with an additional vapour barrier or with an appropriately equipped laminate underlay. Reflected walking sound insulation (RWS) Refl ected walking sounds heard in the same room are called footfall noise. The fact that such sounds are relatively loud in the case of laminate fl oors is due to the fl oor itself. Underlayment can have a noticeable sound reduction impact on this. 0 m No protection 75 m Minimum EPLF requirement All SELIT products Because the testing standard is still being developed, there is no generally recognised test for this; thus, unfortunately, we have no recommendations either. Loud Quiet loading and usage (DL 25, CC, CS) Daily use exposes fl oors and thus also underlayment to heavy wear. This is why laminate underlayment must be able to stand up to longterm loads (CC/furniture), dynamic loads (DL 25 / walking) and temporary loads (CS), over their entire useful life. This is the only way in which the fl oor and particularly its connection system can be protected over the long term. That is why the type of laminate underlay used plays a particularly important role, along with the quality of the fl ooring itself. An underlay can signifi cantly improve the heat insulation properties and improve home comfort by increasing the surface temperature. It provides reliable insulation and enables the fl ooring temperature to be increased by as much as 4 C. It is capable of compensating for unevenness of around 0,5 mm. TRITTEX 2 mm does not fulfi l the minimum requirements of EPLF and MMFA, therefore we do not recommend the product for laminate fl oors, but it can be used as an underlay for less frequented wood fl oorings x 25 m 25 m² 4 rolls TRITTEX In seldomly used rooms! A variety of themes, structures and colours are available at retail. The vinyl panels, also known as LVT fl ooring (luxury vinyl tiles), can be installed, like laminate, very easily thanks to the click--in-place mechanism. This makes the LVT Flooring particularly interesting for DIY hobbyists, especially, because they can be used in damp rooms and on existing fl ooring. However, due to the fact that the vinyl panels are thinner and more fl exible than laminate and the click system is more sensitive, the selection of the right underlay is all the more important. 35 Trading information Certified quality Internal product testing Technical products such as an underlay must be subjected to different tests for quality assurance and product development purposes. SELIT products are tested both prior to market launch and throughout the course of the product lifecycle with respect to all criteria relevant to the market place. All acoustic and mechanical tests are performed in the 500 m² SELIT testing laboratory specially established for this purpose. These testing methods are applied to develop new products and optimise existing ones. Mechanical tests e.g. compression strength, dynamic load etc. Acoustic tests e.g. impact sound reduction and refl ected walking sound reduction Building material tests e.g. reaction to fi re and absorption of water In addition to its work in its own laboratory, SELIT also contributes to the technical working groups of the associations EPLF, MMFA, NALFA and RFCI.
