Project description In 2014 the Future Cities Intensive Programme (IP) will enter the next phase - the second Central European city will be taken as a case study to be investigated. Ljubljana was chosen because of some common characteristics with the Italian case study namely: economic standstill, demographic change and need for comprehensive repair of unused industrial estates in the city. In the wake of euro crisis, stagnation of economy and lack of investment power, it is the dilapidated building stock of old factories in the city that require most pertinent address. Future Cities IP 2014 will investigate the agency of architectural artefact as catalysts to envision sustainable urban futures in economically weak and shrinking cities. By rethinking the connection between urban life, production and research we will investigate how to foster and support flexibility and assure sustainable urban development. Using the research by design -method, within the framework of the IP we will develop and test possible instruments in varying scales. More pertinently, we will investigate and give a suggestion how architecture can help to alleviate current condition and contribute to societies' demand for a sustainable urban transformation and change. Four universities from different regions in Central Europe are co-operating to develop this Erasmus Intensive Programme, bringing together academics, scholars, students and most importantly connecting them to local stakeholders like officials, planners, developers and civic community. As much as the first program which took place in Italy in 2013 this second international intensive workshop aims to enhance the exchange between 1- students and academics and 2- academics and local stakeholders. During the working weeks, we will form multidisciplinary teams where students will actively engage with professionals and local stakeholders alike through intense participatory framework that will help us shape viable alternatives to current urban and architectural practices and develop them into testable projects. The program will be merged in the curriculum. Student colleagues will join the teams in Ljubljana from their home universities by means of modern IT tools. As an overarching pedagogical goal, the hands-on experience of working with actual stakeholders gives students invaluable opportunity to see how complex and engaging urban projects in reality are and what it takes to make an academic concept a reality. In this combination cross-cultural teams plus practical relevance the project is unique. In addition, students will develop a range of skills from media literacy, analytical skills and professional methods which they can apply directly in their later academic or professional careers. The target groups likely to benefit from these intensive working weeks are students from the following disciplines: architecture, urban design, landscape architecture, planning, sociology. 2

Planned dissemination of project results In order to actively promote the project it will be published as a paper book and on the public project's website which is making use of the Web 2.0 interactive tools. The website contains an expandable archive and is connected to a blog system which will allow ongoing discussions about the results and further development of thoughts and activities. The blog will also support a constant communication in a network of students, academics, local players and community members of different countries. These online tools will be closely connected to the printed publications, presentations and exhibitions to reach new (also nonacademic) target groups and get additional people to the online archive and discussion system. 3

Project description Building on the 2011/2012 IPs, which investigated composition in its collaborative, social and aesthetic forms, the focus of the 2013 Erasmus IP Composition: Poetics and Procedure in Individual Performance concentrates on notions of structure (poetics) and making (composition) in individual and solo work, signature and authorship. The IP investigates how a notion of poetics as a way of structuring performance beyond conventional disciplinary modalities may be understood and applied in contemporary dance and performance practice. The IP enables the sharing of different perspectives on a) subjectivities of the artist in relation to contexts and other systems; b) methodologies of presentation in specific thematic and performative modes; c) compositional and procedural strategies and tactics in solo work. The IP continues to provide a framework for the interactive sharing and analysis of compositional, choreographic and dramaturgical approaches to performance. It investigates how such approaches differ from or complement each other; what kinds of pedagogical methods are employed in the making of performance and how procedural poetics contributes to both educational and professional practice. The main objective is to identify, assess and integrate into IP partners programs, innovative and generative approaches to composition which address notions of poetics and solo performance. The target group consists again of students and staff from the six partner MA programmes. The central activities of the IP are the sharing of procedural and developmental strategies for individual and solo work informed by a multidisciplinary poetics, as well as technical, contextual, theoretical or conceptual systems in composition; interdisciplinary and practiceled approaches to compositional research through workshops including: poetics, interaction and interpassivity in solo work; conditioning decisions and poetics as knowledge; and self as the other: strategies and tactics of social-political intentions in solo work. Keynote lectures on the inter-relation of poetics and composition; student driven colloquia on performance theoretical questions; and the sharing of performance work inside the IP and collective attendances at public presentations of work. The learning outcomes of the IP support the capacity of individual students to utilise a range of compositional tools and strategies in relation to solo or self authored work; engage with broader context of the notion of the terms composition and poetics per se; and communicate and cooperate with artists and practitioners from other disciplines and approaches. Planned dissemination of project results The expected outputs include student presentations of work; documentation through web media; sharing of concepts and structures for workshops dealing with questions of composition and solo or individual performance. The IP website remains located at < 7

Technische Fachhochschule Berlin Green Chemistry - A Challenge for European Universities Project coordinator Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Rainer Senz Contact information Lütticher Straße Berlin Tel. +49 (0) Partner universities and contacts Gdansk University of Technology, Dr. Christian Jungnickel, (PL) University of Gdansk, Prof. Dr. Piotr Stepnowski, (PL) University of Lisbon, Prof. Dr. Maria Helena Garçia, (PT) University of Ljubljana, Dr. Andreja Zgajnar Gotvajn, (SI) University of Malta, Prof. Dr. Emmanuel Sinagra, (MT) Dublin City Univesity, Dr. Nicholas Gathergood, (EI) Project Website(s) Participating subject areas Level of study Funded persons Working language IP Location Duration of course Chemistry, Chemical and Process, Environmental Science Bachelor 35 students, 15 teachers English Malta 10 days Year of Initial application 2012/13 Envisaged project duration 2 years ERASMUS Grant 2013/ ,00 8

Project description The principles of Green Chemistry are a prerequisite for a sustainable future. Many universities have a number of courses covering environmental chemistry, and environmental science. However, these courses generally do not focus enough on the proactive aspects of Green Chemistry. The Green Chemistry IP course has the principal objective to immense and thereby transfer the philosophy of sustainable chemistry to students. Green Chemistry has been accepted as the only sustainable choice for our future chemical research. However, the problem is, that many of the standard course structures do not yet incorporate the new aspects of Green Chemistry in their curricula. The philosophy of green chemistry applies to all fields of chemistry including organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry as well as environmental chemistry and engineering. The direction of this course, however, is to focus on industrial application, but is open to any chemistry choice. The Green Chemistry IP aims to improve the volume and quality of multilateral cooperation between HEIs within Europe and especially the participating HEIs. This is enabled by the structure of the course, the participation of lecturers and the transnational cooperation among the institutes, which all will make a specialized contribution to the field of Green Chemistry. Furthermore the program aims to establish a collection of knowledge resources concerning the field of Green Chemistry, available for the participating and all HEIs in Europe working on this field. Apart from the industrial aspect, emphasis will be given to innovative fields like supramolecular chemistry and bioengineering. The target group of the course will be advanced BA students that are close to carrying out their bachelor practical work and thesis. The covered subjects will be chemistry, chemical and pharmaceutical engineering and environmental chemistry and engineering, which are offered by at least one of the participating HEIs. Each partner will select the students by a self-chosen method (leading students of the year, personal interview etc.) after a call for interested students to attend the program. The main activities include the intense cooperation between all institutes of the participating HEIs and their participation at appropriate events like meetings and conferences. The program is based on a long experience of international cooperation of all project partners and will commit further value to this. The initial content of the present proposal has been discussed and agreed upon by all participants. Planned dissemination of project results The expected results are to achieve a common understanding of the innovative field of Green Chemistry with all on-going aspects and problems. These should also find their way into the regular curriculum of the participating HEIs over time. Furthermore, it is expected that such modules are expanded to other topic related science institutes around Europe. The dissemination of the Erasmus programs in general and the IPs specifically into education, research and industry will also perform a huge contribution. 9

Project description Hosted by the Institute for European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), the intensive program TEACHING THE CRISIS attends to the present need at the European level to foster academic exchange and discussion about existing approaches to understanding the ongoing so-called debt and financial crisis in Europe. Emphasizing multidisciplinarity, the IP brings together students and teachers of anthropology, sociology, political science, philosophy and gender studies. The program promotes the exploration of the multifold intersections of these disciplines, allowing students together with lecturers to map out a productive interdisciplinary space for examining the conditions and dimensions of the current crisis with respect to cultural, geographical, political and social developments. Within this space the IP will enable critical exchange amongst the diverse participants of ideas and perspectives in and for Europe in a state of crisis. To this end, the IP aims at advancing the critical development of teaching and learning methods with regard to a European framework. Partner institutions have been selected to ensure a geographically balanced composition between the so-called crisis countries of Southern and Eastern Europe and their Northern European counterparts. Teaching participants have been invited based on a significant contribution to understanding the crisis and its European dimensions and commitment to multidisciplinary approaches. Each participating institution is responsible for selecting student participants of MA and Ph.D. level, based on a strong interest in the crisis and its European dimensions as well as in didactics and higher education. The IP can be fully integrated into the academic programs of all student participants (5 ECTS points). In addition to a one-day excursion examining sites of the crisis in Berlin, the primary activities of the IP include of lectures, seminars, ICT-based communication, workshops and working group sessions. A thematically relevant cultural program will be planned for evenings. Program methodology has been developed to support innovation in teaching and learning. A daily dynamization exercise will guarantee continuity and advancement with respect to collective knowledge production during the ten days. Furthermore, internet-based tools will enable communication and exchange before, during and after the IP. The open-source learning platform Moodle, which is integrated in to the HU website, provides an internal communications infrastructure, and an open-access, audiovisual-enabled blog to be embedded in the existing website TEACHING THE CRISIS ( will serve as the IP s public interface. The IP will allow students to collectively produce knowledge on the relationships of local realities of crisis, their relation to the European dimension and, through this process, a repertoire of approaches to and methodological considerations for studying social phenomena in transformation. In this way, students will develop the skills to translate and mediate realities of crisis across contexts and scales. The program furthermore provides students with the opportunity to grapple with diverse forms of knowledge production across disciplinary and geographic lines. A central goal of the IP is to develop international, interdisciplinary networks at both teaching and student levels, in which outcomes of the IP can be further explored through transnational research. The IP moreover intends to produce results for the broader public within and beyond academia. With lecturers consent, lectures will be livestreamed on the website TEACHING THE CRISIS. Finally, written versions of the IP contributions of lecturers and select students will appear in a final publication. A partnership with a scholarly journal is planned to this end. 19

Planned dissemination of project results The website TEACHING THE CRISIS ( is an open-access platform where both program and contact information can be found. In addition to the website, a blog will be set up on which reports and other materials can be made available to the public. This will include lectures made by the teaching faculty during the IP, given their permission, which can be streamed in audio or video form via the website. To further boost sustainability, a publication in the form of a theme issue of an academic journal will appear to which participants will contribute. Lectures of participating faculty as well as an article from one student participant in each thematic area will be included in the publication. Local media, including the HU publications Humboldt and Unaufgefordert, as well as local newspapers, the journal Die Zeit, and radio, will be informed of the intensive program TEACHING-THE-CRISIS. 20

Project description The international summer school "Broadcasting the Americas: Academic Reflections and Media Practice on Politics and Culture" is a joint project of eight European institutions of higher education. It is based on an innovative articulation of media practice and academic discussion. Based on the educational philosophy of a problem-based learning approach, students are introduced to academic reflections of current conflicts and are asked to formulate their own opinions in intercultural teams. In a second step, students themselves will act as transmitters of knowledge as they develop a radio-feature during the project based part of the summer school. As an additional bonus, their newly acquired practical media skills will be documented in the radio passport. The summer school contributes to the international exchange of students and teachers, as well as, on network building amongst partner institutions working in the emergent field of Hemispheric American Studies. By bringing together and merging the positions of lecturers and students in an environment outside their own university campus, the summer school creates multifaceted exchange of ideas, teaching styles, approaches to studying the Americas and perceptions on higher education. The summer school programme is divided into two complementary parts: in the morning, students choose from four innovative interdisciplinary seminars (Ethnicity & Identities; Caribbean History and Literature; Social Movements and Human Rights; Borderland Studies). These seminars are taught by a group of three teachers each, providing a unique atmosphere of team-teaching and co-tutelle. The teachers will open up insight into their research activities from the vantage points of culture, history, literature, politics and social anthropology. In the afternoon session, participants will first receive an introduction into media praxis and specific audio tools by professional media coaches, before engaging in a student radio project related to the subjects of the seminar in which they are enrolled. Teachers and media coaches will support and advice students continuously in their efforts. Thus, students will acquire valuable key competences such as skills in text and media analysis, communication in a foreign language, digital competence related to basic competences in science and technology. Skills as such are highly valued in international agencies, intercultural communication, public relations, and text- and media-based fields, all potential lines of employment for the participating students. The learning outcomes will be broadcasted by university radio stations and later be made available to the wider public via the host-website and other digital media channels. The target group of the summer school is 48 students from a broad variety of educational backgrounds from all study levels. 33 students will be sent from one of the eight IP partner universities and up to 15 places will be allocated to students from other partners interested in our cooperation in the field of the Americas. Students who successfully complete the summer school programme will obtain 5 ECTS Credits which will be recognized by their home universities. If their local study programme requires an academic seminar paper as expected examination result, students can obtain an additional 3 ECTS for a 15 pages assignment. 22

Planned dissemination of project results The primer, direct outcomes of this summer school are the radio broadcasts produced by the students. In a first instance, these will be presented on the final day of the summer school. A production including the radio features will be aired in cooperation with Radio Hertz 87.9, the local university radio station, the organization that will also issue the "Radio passports". Both the organizing institutions, as well as, the participating IP partners will look for other media partners willing to broadcast the programme in the months leading up to the summer school. To assure the long-term availability and of the student projects they will be inserted into the website of the Center for Inter-American Studies at Bielefeld University ( and are at the disposal of all partners and the general public (provided that the students agree with the publication of their work). Thus, the results of the summer school are aimed to serve as an inspiration for innovative learning arrangements that may be followed not only inside the participating institutions, but also for other for other transnational cooperation in education. The Academic Board appointed to coordinate the summer school will compose a report about the project, based on classroom discussion, outcomes and results of debates, personal statements of participating students and teachers, and observations made throughout the two-week period. This report will be made available on the referred website. The report will serve as a reference to summer school students, teaching staff and most importantly to the coordinators of the IP program at each participating university. Thus, the experience gained from organizing and carrying out such an international endeavour with an interdisciplinary program is shared with the people directly involved in the project, but also with the wider academic community. Multiplying effects or possible spin-offs: The summer school aims to be an international platform to link and possibly extend different European networks, which share a transregional approach towards the Americas. As such the results may not only lead towards future multilateral research initiatives, but also to the implementation of a curriculum for possible Double Degree Programmes, for instance, in Inter American Studies, which are currently envisioned between several partners. For Bielefeld University, the international summer school will be a unique possibility to advertise the venue as an open-minded and student-friendly institution and maybe inspire some students to return to Bielefeld for a longer stay by applying for example to individual Erasmus mobility programmes. Especially the successful Master program in Inter American Studies may profit from this event. It has been redesigned recently for a second accreditation period and is now even more open for international students, as the whole programme can be completed in English and Spanish. The program targets participants who are in the first phase of their academic career and are willing to pursue an innovative, interdisciplinary study course. More advanced students may be attracted by Bielefeld's unique postgraduate program. One of the possible spin-offs of this cooperation may be the introduction of an international PhD course including co-tutelle by experts from different partner universities. Of course, the possibility to advertise its study programmes does not only refer to the organizing institution. All participating partners may present themselves with their respective study programmes in the field of Inter-American, Latin American, or Anglo-American Studies. 23

Students have the opportunity to get to know members of the teaching staff from each participating university and have the opportunity to learn about the research topics pursued, before making up their mind about a possible further engagement with institutions of higher education active in this particular research field. 24

Project description The programme United in diversity? Bonds and burdens of the French-German-Polish ménage à trois focuses on cultural aspects of European integration, specifically on cultural differences between Germany, France and Poland and the question how these influence political conflicts and cooperation. The European Union s motto United in Diversity indicates a desire to deal with cultural differences without suppressing or abolishing them. In the current climate of crisis, however, differences are often presented as problems, rendering further integration difficult if not impossible. Therefore, the question arises whether the persistence of difference should be regarded as a failure or a success of the European project. The positive aspect of conflict as a motor of development and creative change should receive more attention. The problems and tensions arising from, on the one hand, cultural differences, and on the other hand, protests against excessive egalitarianism and harmonization, show that culture constitutes a highly political topic in Europe. The programme approaches these questions by focusing on selected fields of (potential) misunderstandings and different approaches between France, Germany and Poland: cultures of memory, politics of language, dealing with immigration, attitudes towards conservation and progress, and ideas of Europe. The programme is a Franco-German-Polish project which invites participation of interested students from different academic fields. It mainly targets MA and PhD students from the partner universities. Together with experts from the partner universities and external contributors, participants will work on diverse questions cutting across disciplinary lines from political sciences, history, cultural studies, comparative literature and religious studies. Students acquire the ability to see problems from various disciplinary and cultural perspectives, a deep understanding of commonalities and differences between Germany, France and Poland, as well as skills in handling multimedia and ICT equipment and communicating complex content to a broad audience. The programme is designed to engage students and young researchers, offering them opportunities for active participation and presentation of their own expertise. Individual presentations and a group project are integral parts of the programme. Input lectures and panel debates are followed by participant discussions. Furthermore, students will participate in a workshop on intercultural communication and visits to cultural and political institutions in the region, where they explore places and methods of intercultural encounters. They will also reflect on cultural diversity in their own cities, taking Bonn as an example: a thematic city tour and study visits provide the opportunity to connect theory with practice. Participants will put their intellectual reflections to paper in the form of an essay examination at the end of the programme. Moreover, they will produce different forms of output during the group projects, such as texts, pictures, audio programmes and videos. These will be made available on the website of the programme. After the end of the programme, a report with selected contributions from the essays, seminars, presentations and group projects will be produced and circulated in print and online. A further intended outcome of the programme is the development of a graduate programme in European cultural studies, currently planned at the Faculty of Arts at Bonn University, potentially in cooperation with the participating partner universities. This IP could be an important milestone within that development. 26
