3 ii ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to reconstruct the evolution of the Pleistocene hydrothermal system on the volcanic island of Milos (Aegean Island Arc, Greece), whose activity led to the formation of large bentonite, kaolinite, sulfides, and barite deposits on the eastern part of the island. This liquid-dominated hydrothermal system is called the Trogalas-Aggeria- Voudia (TAV) System. At present, the hydrothermal activity has shifted towards the southeastern coast of the island, where hot springs, hot ground, and fumaroles occur. Volcanism on Milos developed, over a basement consisting of metamorphic rocks and sedimentary units, from middle Pliocene to upper Pleistocene. The explosive eruptions which produced the Phyriplaka tuff-ring and the related lava-flows are the most recent sign of volcanic activity taking place approximately 90'000 years BP. This event was accompanied by huge hydrothermal explosions, as witnessed by the hydrothermal craters and hydroclastic deposits which cover a large portion of eastern Milos. As it is visible in the Phylacopi-Pollonia area, the Pleistocene unaltered volcanic sequence within eastern Milos is characterized mainly by tuffites, pillow lavas/breccias, and hyaloclastites which occur within depressions around dacitic lava domes. The Pillow lavas, breccias, and hyaloclastites (Pillow Lava Hyaloclastite Formation, PLHF) are regarded as the most suitable bentonite protoliths. Furthermore, completely bentonized pillow lavas and hyaloclastites are almost completely preserved in the mine of Aggeria. The general chemical characteristics of the PLHF are andesitic to latitic with close similarities to low-ti shoshonites. The average bulk chemical composition follows the high-k calcalcaline trend (wt.%: Si02: 58-60, Ti02: , Al203: 17-18, FeO+Fe203: , MnO: , MgO: , CaO: , Na20: 2.7-3, K20: , P205: ; in ppm: Ba: , Sr: , Rb: 50-70, Y: 5-10, Ni: 5-15). The latitic-andesitic composition of the PLHF, together with a NW-SE and a E- W striking fault systems, are the most important factors controlling the formation of bentonite. The bentonites generally show the mineral paragenesis Camontmorillonite, cristobalite (quartz and/or opal), sanidine, and calcite. Kaolinite, plagioclase, and sulfides can occur as accessories. Leaching at T=150 ±20 C of the more hygromagmatophile elements such as Ca, Na, K, Ba, Sr, Rb, and LREE from the porous and glassy PLHF, were

4 Ill necessary to achieve ideal smectite composition. The average isotopic composition of the acid chloride-sulfate fluids which were responsible for the bentonitization are estimed to have been of 8 O=+6.0±1.5%o and 8D=-41±2%o. The strongly negative 8D values suggest a mixed seawater (evolved and fresh)- meteoric water derived fluid. Alteration products showing the mineral paragenesis kaolinite-alunite-quartzgypsum (i.e. the kaolinite-alunite zone) are always found on the upper part of the system and are, therefore, interpreted to be of secondary origin. Their formation occurred at T=110 ±10 C and was favoured by the occurrence of rhyolitic tephra and by the action of acid sulfate fluids. Furthermore, widespread silicification occurred within the southeastern part of the island. Clay alteration and silicification were followed by mineralization around the Kavos-Pilonissi area, which shows the paragenesis quartz-barite-disseminated sulfides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite). Microthermometric measurements and stable isotopes analytics on quartz and barite have stressed the importance of mixing processes and boiling during mineralization. The mineralizing fluids were probably boiling, as pointed out by fluid quartz inclusions. and barite: inclusions in the same Th values were obtained from L-rich and V-rich These mainly Na-Ca-CI fluids of salinity S<5wt.%eq.NaCI result from mixing of a relatively high saline brine of marine origin from a deep reservoir (salinity up to10wt.%eq.naci, depth probably>1'000 m) diluted with hydrothermal fluids from a more surficial reservoir (S<1.5wt.%eq.NaCI, depth: m) and meteoric waters. A fluid trend from relatively high salinity pseudosecondary inclusions to moderately saline inclusions ( i.e. mineralizing fluids) and low salinity secondary inclusions of meteoric origin is proposed. Oxygen isotopes on quartz are consistent with Th data (homogenization temperatures) and indicate, for the quartz-barite zone, a formation temperature of T=220 ±15 C, and fluids with 818O=+3.0±1.5%o.

5 iv ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Entwicklung vom pleistozanen hydrothermalen System auf der vulkanischen Insel Milos (Aegaischer Inselbogen, Griechenland) zu rekonstruieren. Die hydrothermale Aktivitat im sogenannten Trogalas-Aggeria- Voudia (TAV)-System fuhrte zur Bildung von zahlreichen Bentonit-, Kaolint-, Sulfid-, und Barytlagerstatten im Ostteil der Insel. Heutzutage hat sich die hydrothermale Aktivitat zur sudlichen Kuste bei Phyriplaka verschoben, auf der heisse Quellen, heisse Boden und Fumarolen noch vorhanden sind. Der Vulkanismus auf Milos entwickelte sich vom mittlerem Pliozan bis zum oberem Pleistozan. Die Vulkanite uberlagern ein Grundgebirge bestehend aus metamorphen Gesteinen und sedimentaren Einheiten. Die explosiven Eruptionen, die vor.ca 90'000 Jahre zur Bildung des Tuff-Rings von Phyriplaka fuhrten, und die assoziierten Lava-Ergusse sind das rezenteste Zeichen vulkanischer Aktivitat. Dieses vulkanische Ereignis war von gewaltigen hydrothermalen Explosionen begleitet, wie die zahlreichen hydrothermalen Krater und die machtigen hydroklastischen Ablagerungen belegen. im Ostteil Milos Die vulkanischen Produkte, wie in der unalterierten Zone von Phylacopi- Pollonia zu sehen ist, bestehen aus Tuffiten, Pillow Laven und dazitischen Lava Domen. Die Pillow Laven/-Brekzien und Hyaloklastite (Pillow Lava-Hyaloclastite Formation, PLHF) werden als die Ausganggesteine der Bentonite angesehen. Vollstandig bentonisierte Pillow Laven und Hyaloklastite sind im Steinbruch Aggeria zu beobachten. 6 V Auslaugung bei T=150 ±20 C der hygromagmatophilen Elementen Ca, Na, K, Ba, Sr, Rb und LREE aus der porosen und glasreichen PLHF war notig, ideale Smektitzusammensetzung um die zu erreichen. Die durchschnittliche isotopische Zusammensetzung der fur die Bentonitisierung verantwortlichen 18 sauren chlorid- und sulfathaltigen Fluide liegt bei 8 O=+6.0±1.5%o and 8D=-41±2%o. Der stark negative Trend der 8D Werte zeigt den Einfluss von einem gemischten Fluid aus einer Sole mariner Herkunft, frischem Meerwasser und meteorischem Wasser. Diese Na-Ca-CI Fluide mit S<5wt.%eq.NaCI sind das Resultat einer Mischung aus einem relativ hochsalinaren hydrothermalen Losung aus einem tiefgelegenen Reservoir (Tiefe>1'000 m, Salinitat bis zu 10wt.%eq.NaCI) von mariner Herkunft mit einem Fluid, das von einem oberflachennahen Reservoir (S<1.5wt.%eq.NaCI, Tiefe: m) stammt. Dieses Fluid konnte zusatzlich mit meteorischem Wasser verdunnt sein. Messungen von Sauerstffisotopen im Quarz stimmen mit den Homogenisierungstemperaturen Th uberein und zeigen, fur die Quarz-Baryt Zone, eine Bildungstemperatur Fluiden mit 8180 =+3.0±1.5%o. von T=220 ±15 C aus
