Albert & Börge Pett aus Nord-Sumatra, Indonesien William Cavestro & Olaf Gruss Summary: A new species from northern Sumatra is described as Paphiopedilum rohmanii Cavestro & O. Gruss. It is a member of the section Barbata and closely related to Paph. tonsum. Einführung Dieses Jahr wurden einige neue Arten der Gattung Paphiopedilum aus Indonesien einschließlich Java, Sumatra und Sulawesi beschrieben. Im März 2017 beschrieb einer der Autoren zusammen N. Bougourd Paph. agusii, eine neue Art aus dem Zentrum Javas (Cavestro, 2017). Aus der Provinz Aceh im Norden Sumatras wurden erst kürzlich 4 neue Arten beschrieben. Eine der Arten, als Paph. dodyanum benannt, gehört zur Sektion Cochlopetalum (Cavestro, 2017). Die anderen drei Arten, Paph. lunatum, Paph. bungebelangi und Paph. zulhermanianum Cavestro, sind Teil der Sektion Barbata V.A. Albert & Börge Pett. Sie wurden von D. Metusala (2017) und W. Cavestro (2017) beschrieben. In diesem Artikel soll eine weitere neue Art der Gattung Paphiopedilum vorgestellt und offiziell als Paphiopedilum rohmanii beschrieben werden. Der Name bezieht sich auf den Namen des Entdeckers dieser neuen Art, Rohman Ikhwan. Die Art gehört ebenfalls zur Sektion Barbata. Sie stammt nach unseren Informationen aus dem Norden Sumatras, der Provinz Aceh Tengah. Dieses neue Paphiopedilum hat eine weiße Fahne, die hell purpurn überhaucht ist und braun-purpurne Adern hat. Die Petalen sind mehr oder minder herabgebogen, grün geadert und hellbraun gefleckt. Die hellbraune Lippe ist braun geadert. Das weißgrundige halbmondförmige Staminodium ist in der Mitte grün netzartig geadert. Diese Kennzeichen unterscheiden sie von allen anderen Arten der Sektion Barbata (Kraenzlin) V.A. Albert & Börge Pett. Auf Sumatra umfasst diese Sektion Paph. barbatum (Lindl.) Pfitzer, Paph. bullenianum (Rchb.f.) Pfitzer, Paph. javanicum (Reinw. ex. Lindley) Pfitzer, Paph. superbiens (Rchb.f.) Stein, Paph. tonsum (Rchb.f.) Stein und zudem die neuen, gerade entdeckten Paphiopedilum-Arten Paph. bungebelangi Metusala, Paph. lunatum Metusala und P. zulhermanianum Cavestro. Keine dieser Arten ist dem neuen Paph. rohmanii ähnlich. Die genaue Untersuchung zeigt, dass die am nächsten verwandte Art das Paph. tonsum ist. Zudem zeigt auch das Paph. barbatum eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit. Diagnose Paphiopedilum rohmanii Cavestro & O. Gruss, sp.nov. Paphiopedilo tonso (Rchb.f.) Stein simile sed petalis deflexis, recurvatis ad apicem et maculatioribus, staminodio lunato (non subreniformi) et in centro viridi-reticulato differt. Paphiopedilum rohmanii Cavestro & O. Benk, Lembang, West Java, Indonesia. W. Cavestro, s.n. (Holotype: ANDA). Paphiopedilum rohmanii Cavestro & O. Gruss, sp.nov. resembles Paphiopedilum tonsum (Rchb.f.) Stein but differs in deflexed, twisted at apex, more mottled brown petals, a staminode lunate (not subreniform) and green reticulated in the middle. Paphiopedilum rohmanii Cavestro & O. Gruss, sp.nov. ist dem Paphiopedilum tonsum (Rchb.f.) Stein, ähnlich, unterscheidet sich aber durch die herabgebogenen Petalen, welche zur Spitze hin verdreht sind, durch die stärker braun gefleckten Petalen und das halbmondförmige (nicht nierenförmige), im Zentrum grün netzförmig geaderte Staminodium. Etymologie: Benannt nach Rohman Ikhwan, dem Besitzer der Gärtnerei Rohman Orchids in Aceh, Sumatra (Indonesien). 3

Ow Paphiopedilum rohmanii am Standort, Staminodium Paphiopedilum rohmanii am Standort 4 Beschreibung Eine terrestrisch wachsende Pflanze mit einem, zwei oder mehr Trieben. Blätter 4 5, schmal länglich bis länglich elliptisch, stumpf oder dreizähnig an der Spitze, cm lang und 2,5 2,8 cm breit, grün, grün geädert und dunkelgrün marmoriert. Infloreszenz einblütig; Blütenstand cm lang, purpurn und feinflaumig behaart; Brakteen oval-elliptisch, stumpf, 1 1,3 cm lang, grün, purpurn gefleckt. Blüten 9 11 cm im Durchmessser; dorsales Sepalum (Fahne) weiß, purpurn eingefärbt, zur Spitze weiß, braun purpurn geädert; Synsepalum weiß, purpurn geädert; Petalen weiß, grün eingefärbt in der Mitte und am oberen Rand, grün bis grünpurpurn gestreift, hellbraun gefleckt; Seitenlappen der Lippe blassrosa bis hellbraun, Mittellappen (Schuh) blassbraun und braun geädert, zur Spitze hin blassgrün; Staminodium blassgrün und grün netzartig geädert im Zentrum. Dorsales Sepalum (Fahne) breit oval, Ränder gewellt und bewimpert, 4,5 cm lang und 4,5 breit. Synsepalum elliptisch oval, konkav, stumpf, 3 cm lang und 1,6 cm breit. Petalen mehr oder weniger herabgebogen, elliptisch läng - lich, stumpf, zur Spitze hin verdreht, bewimpert, 5 5,5 cm lang und 1,7 2 cm breit. Lippe sackförmig, sich zur Spitze hin verjüngend, 4,4 4,8 cm lang und 2 2,5 cm breit; Seitenlappen einwärts geschlagen. Staminodium halbmondförmig, 10 mm lang und 7 mm breit, mit 2 apikalen seitlichen kurzen Zähnen, welche etwas nach innen gebogen und stumpf sind. Durch ihre Blüte und die nach unten gebogenen Petalen erinnert diese neue Art augenscheinlich an Paph. callosum (Rchb.f.) Stein, das in Kambodscha, Thailand und Laos vorkommt. Bei den Arten von Sumatra erinnert das Paph. rohmanii an Paph. barbatum und Paph. tonsum. Paph. barbatum wurde auf der Malayischen Halbinsel gefunden, Paph. tonsum im Norden und im Zentrum von Sumatra. Diese zwei Arten sind zwar räumlich näher zu Paph. rohmanii, aber die Blüte von Paph. barbatum unterscheidet sich doch recht deutlich. Paph. barbatum hat nur etwas herabgebogene Petalen ohne braune Punkte und eine braunpurpurne Lippe, welche deutlich dunkler ist als die von Paph. rohmanii ist. Das Staminodium von Paph. barbatum ist halbmondförmig und im Zentrum deutlich weniger geädert. Paph. tonsum hat deutlich horizontal abstehende Petalen. Die Flecken auf den Petalen sind deutlich weniger. Das Staminodium ist fast nierenförmig und nicht grün geädert, während das von Paph. rohmanii halbmondförmig und im Zentrum grün netzartig geädert ist. Diese Unterschiede zeigen, dass das Paph. rohmanii tatsächlich eine von Paph. barbatum und Paph. tonsum klar abgrenzbare Art ist. In den kommenden Jahren wird es interessant sein, noch mehr über diese neue Art zu erfahren, ihre Variabilität, ihren Standort und die Standortbedingungen sowie ihre Stellung innerhalb der Sektion Barbata. Albert & Börge Pett from northern Sumatra, Indonesia William Cavestro & Olaf Gruss Introduction This year, new Paphiopedilum have been discovered in Indonesia, including Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi. In March 2017, we described with N. Bougourd P. agusii, a new species from the center of Java (Cavestro, 2017). Four new species from the province of Aceh in Sumatra have just been described. One, named P. dodyanum, belongs to the Cochlopetalum section (Cavestro, 2017). The other three species, P. lunatum, P. bungebelangi and P. zulhermanianum Cavestro, are part of the Section Barbata V.A. Albert & Börge Pett. They have been described by Metusala (2017) and Cavestro (2017). In this publication we present a new Paphiopedilum named Paphiopedilum rohmanii. Its name refers to the name of the discoverer, Rohman Ikhwan. It also belongs to the Barbata section but according to our information, it originates from the north of Sumatra in the province (Regency) of Aceh Tengah. This Paphiopedilum has a white dorsal sepal tinged with light purple and brown-purple veined, petals deflexed, green veined and spotted with light brown, a light brown lip veined with brown, a lunate staminode white and green reticulated in the middle. These characteristics are somewhat different from the species of the section Barbata (Kraenzlin) V.A. Albert & Börge Pett. In Sumatra this section includes P. barbatum (Lindl.) Pfitzer, P. bullenianum (Rchb.f.) Pfitzer, P. javanicum (Reinw. ex. Lindley) Pfitzer, P. superbiens (Rchb.f.) Stein, P. tonsum (Rchb.f.) Stein and also the recently discovered Paphiopedilum: P. bungebelangi Metusala, P. lunatum Metusala and P. zulhermanianum Cavestro. P. bungebelangi and P. lunatum grow in the province of Aceh, P. 6 zulhermanianum is from Western Sumatra. None of these newly described species resembles P. rohmanii. On examining the flower, the closest species is P. tonsum. However, there is also a lesser resemblance to P. barbatum. Diagnosis Paphiopedilum rohmanii Cavestro & O. Gruss sp.nov. Leaves 4 5, narrowly oblong to oblong-elliptic, obtuse or tridenticulate at apex, cm long and cm wide, green, green veined and dark green mottled. Inflorescence one flowered; peduncle cm long, purple and finely pubescent; bracts ovate-elliptic, obtuse, cm long, green spotted with purple. Flowers 9 11 cm across; dorsal sepal white and purple tinged, white in apical part, brown-purple veined; synsepal white and purple veined; petals white, green tinged in the middle and the upper margin, green to green-purple striated, spotted with light brown; side-lobes of labellum pale rose to light brown, mid-lobe pale brown and brown veined, pale green in apical part; staminode pale green and green reticulated in the middle. Dorsal sepal broadly ovate, margins undulate and ciliate, 4.5 cm long and 4.5 wide. Synsepal elliptic-ovate, concave, obtuse, 3 cm long and 1.6 cm wide. Petals more or less deflexed, elliptic-oblong, obtuse, twisted at apex, ciliate, cm long and cm wide. Labellum saccate, narrowing towards apex, cm long and cm wide; side-lobes incurved. Staminode lunate, 10 mm long and 7 mm wide, 2 apical lateral and short teeth slightly incurved and obtuse. By its flower and its deflexed petals this new species apparently resembles P. callosum (Rchb.f.) Stein which is in Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. Among the species of Sumatra P. rohmanii has a resemblance to P. barbatum and P. tonsum. P. barbatum is found on the Malay Peninsula and to the North and the center of Sumatra. These two species are therefore geographically close to P. rohmanii. However, the flower of P. barbatum is very different. P. barbatum has petals slightly deflexed and not spotted, a brown-purple lip much darker than that of P. rohmanii. The staminode of P. barbatum is lunate and less reticulated in the middle. P. tonsum has slightly drooping petals in horizontal position. The spots on the petals are less numerous. The staminode is subreniform and not green reticulated whereas that of P. rohmanii is lunate and green reticulated in the middle. These differences show that P. rohmanii is indeed a distinct species of P. barbatum and P. tonsum.

En mars 2017, avec N. Bougourd, nous avons décrit P. agusii, une nouvelle espèce originaire du centre de Java (Cavestro, 2017). Dans la province d Aceh à Sumatra, quatre nouvelles espèces viennent d être décrites. L une, nommée P. dodyanum, appartient à la section Cochlopetalum (Cavestro, 2017). Les trois autres espèces, P. lunatum, P. bungebelangi et P. zulhermanianum Cavestro font partie de la section Barbata V.A. Albert & Börge Pett. Elles ont été décrites par Metusala (2017) et Cavestro (2017). Dans cette publication, nous présentons un nouveau Paphiopedilum nommé Paphiopedilum rohmanii. Il appartient aussi à la section Barbata mais selon nos infomations, il est originaire du nord de Sumatra dans la province de Aceh Tengah. Ce Paphiopedilum a un sépale dorsal blanc ombré de pourpre clair et strié de marronpourpre, des pétales défléchis striés de vert et tachetés de marron clair, un labelle brun clair veiné de brun, un staminode en demi-lune blanc rosé et 8 réticulé de vert au centre. Ces caractéristiques sont différentes des espèces de la section Barbata (Kraenzlin) V.A. Albert & Börge Pett. A Sumatra cette section comprend P. barbatum (Lindl.) Pfitzer, P. bullenianum (Rchb.f.) Pfitzer, P. javanicum (Reinw. ex Lindley) Pfitzer, P. superbiens (Rchb.f.) Stein, P. tonsum (Rchb.f.) Stein et aussi les nouveaux Paphiopedilum décrits récemment: P. bungebelangi Metusala, P. lunatum Metusala et P. zulhermanianum Cavestro. P. bungebelangi et P. lunatum sont originaire de la province d Aceh, P. zulhermanianum de l ouest de Sumatra. Aucune de ces espèces nouvellement décrites ne ressemble à P. rohmanii. A l examen de la fleur, l espèce la plus proche est P. tonsum. Cependant, on notera aussi une ressemblance moins importante avec P. barbatum. Discussion Cette nouvelle espèce ressemble en apparence, par sa fleur et ses pétales défléchis, à P. callosum (Rchb.f.) Stein qui se trouve au Cambodge, en Thaïlande et au Laos. Parmi les espèces de Sumatra P. rohmanii a une ressemblance avec P. barbatum et P. tonsum. P. barbatum se trouve sur la péninsule malaise et au nord et au centre de Sumatra. Ces deux espèces sont donc proches géographiquement de P. rohmanii. Cependant, la fleur de P. barbatum est très différente. P. barbatum a des pétales faiblement défléchis, sans aucune tache, un labelle marron-pourpre beaucoup plus foncé que celui de P. rohmanii. Le staminode de P. barbatum est lunate et moins réticulé au centre. P. tonsum a des pétales légèrement retombants. Les taches sur les pétales sont moins nombreuses. Le staminode est subréniforme et non réticulé alors que celui de P. rohmanii est lunate et réticulé. Ces différences montrent que P. rohmanii est bien une espèce distincte de P. barbatum et P. tonsum. Mabanta & Jim Cootes Abstract: A new species, Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae Naive, Mabanta, & Cootes (Orchidaceae) is described and illustrated from the Philippines. This new species is comparable to C. datuguinai but distinct in the shape of the labellum and colour of the floral bracts. Information on the habitat and ecology as well as its relationship to other similar species of the genus are provided. With this discovery, there are now nine species of Cylindrolobus known from the Philippines. Keywords: Bukidnon, Philippines, CEDAR, Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae, Orchidaceae, new species. Introduction One never ceases to be amazed at the continuous parade of previously undescribed species being found in northern Mindanao, specifically in Bukidnon province. Bukidnon, landlocked by mountain ranges and forest reserves, is a haven for botanists and plant enthusiasts. It harbors a diverse flora and fauna amongst its numerous mountains and forest reserves that provide a habitat for wildlife and supports diverse vegetation types which are rich in plant genetic resources, including orchids (Naive, 2017). During the second author s expedition to one of the forest reserves of Bukidnon province, he came across an unknown epiphytic orchid species belonging to the genus Cylindrolobus. He collected it and contacted the first and third author to help him determine its identity. After a careful examination of the morphological characters of the species and a search of the relevant literature from the Philippines and neighboring countries, it turned out that the collected specimen does not match any other known species. We hereby take this opportunity to describe this orchid as Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae, a species new to science. The genus Cylindrolobus was originally proposed by Dr. Carl Blume as a section of Eria in In the year 1981, Friedrich G. Brieger raised the section to generic level in the German periodical Orchideen. The type species for this genus is Cylindrolobus compressus (Blume) Brieger. The generic name refers to the shape of the labellum (Cootes, 2011). They are characterized by their, usually, cylindrical stems, that are leafy on the upper half. The flowers appear singly, and have a number of colored bracts on the pedicel. Members of the genus Cylindrolobus are represented by approximately 35 species which are distributed in India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Philippines, throughout Indonesia and Borneo. The Philippines has at least nine species, all of which appear to be endemic (Naive et al., 2016). Taxonomic Treatment Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae Naive, Mabanta et Cootes sp.nov. Type: Philippines, Northern Mindanao, Bukidnon, Impasug-on, Impalutao, Center for Ecological Development and Recreation (CEDAR), epiphytic in deeply shaded location, elevation 780 m, coordinates N by E, 24 March 2017, M.A. Naive 018/2017 (Holotype: cmuh ). Diagnosis: Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae Naive, Mabanta, & Cootes is most similar to Cylindrolobus datuguinai Naive, M.D. De Leon & Buenavista. However, it can be recognized by having a marked difference in the number of flowers (1 vs. 2 to 4), color of the floral bracts (maroon vs. pale yellow) and ovary with pedicel (maroon vs. purple). It also differs in the shape of the labellum, a much ciliate margin of the midlobe and in the shape of the side lobes. Growth habit upright, sympodial, epiphyte on a lower tree trunk, up to 75 cm long. Stems terete, up to 72 cm long by 1 cm in diameter. Leaves triangular to narrowly lanceolate, glabrous, entire, papery, 11 to 13 cm long by 2.5 to 3.0 cm wide, attenuate. Inflorescences short, appearing opposite the leaves, up to 3 cm long by 1.5 to 1.8 cm across the petals, bearing single flower that are not opening widely, with four floral bracts; floral bracts lanceolate, fleshy, with up to 7 veins, encircling the base of pedicel, decussate, glabrous, entire, 1.2 to 1.4 cm long by 0.5 to 0.6 cm wide, acute. Flower colour sepals and petals pure white, with random maroon blotching; labellum cream with maroon blotches. Dorsal sepal narrowly ovate to oblong, with up to 7 veins, concave, entire, 1.2 to 1.4 cm long by 0.5 to 0.6 cm wide, apex slightly cucullate. Petals linear to narrowly lanceolate, slightly falcate, with up to 3 veins, 1 to 1.2 cm long by 0.20 to 0.25 cm wide. Lateral sepals broadly triangular, falcate, with up to 6 veins, margin entire and slightly involute, 1 to 1.2 cm long by 7.5 to 8 cm wide, apex cucullate. Labellum trilobed, 0.8 to 1.0 cm long; side lobes narrowly triangular, erect, pointing forward, slightly falcate, margins ciliate, enclosing the column; mid-lobe ovate, villose, with one longitudinal, villose ridge, margins ciliate, apex acute, 0.5 to 0.6 cm long by 0.3 to cm wide, recurved. Column erect, enclosed by the lateral lobes of the labellum, up to 0.7 cm long; column foot arching, up to 0.8 cm long. Pedicel and Ovary clavate, grooved, 1.5 to 1.7 cm long. Distribution: Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae is a local endemic species, only known from the type locality in the Center for Ecological Development and 9

Also, the vegetative morphology of the said two closely similar species could tell that the species are different. Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae has shorter stem unlike C. datuguinai which have a much longer stem. Leaves of C. oliviacamposiae are papery whereas C. datuguinai are leathery. Ecology: Cylindrolobus oliviacamposiae is an epiphytic herb, found growing from a fallen tree in secondary forest, with deeply shaded localities at elevation 700 to 800 meters above sea level. Etymology: Named after the second author s cousin Mrs. Olivia Mabanta Campos, who has helped and inspired the former in making Bukidnon a second home while pursuing a career in pineapple farming. 11 Internet Vol. 5 3 As the new species is currently known only from a single collection, and the orchid flora of CEDAR, Bukidnon is generally poorly known, an assessment of its conservation status can obviously not be made. The new species was only seen in this one locality where it was not abundant.
