How to use the large-capacity computer Lilli? IMPORTANT: Access only on JKU Campus!! Using Windows: In order to connect to Lilli you need to install the program PUTTY. The program enables you to create a tunnel from your PC to Lilli. Download the.exe-file using the link below and save it on your desktop. http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe Open the file putty.exe and insert the following information: Insert the Hostname: lilli.edvz.uni-linz.ac.at Insert the Port: 22 Insert a name for the settings: Lilli Click the Save button 1
An error alert may occur: Click on Yes A new window will pop up: Type your login-username: empwanxx (replace XX with last 2 numbers of your account) Type your initial password: XXXXXX (the letters you type in are not displayed in the window) After pressing Enter, you can change your initial password. 2
Type vncpasswd and press Enter Type your new password (and do not forget it) and press Enter Enter again the new password Press n and apply with Enter You need to create a new VNC desktop: Type: vncserver -geometry 1500x750 (geometry defines the size of the window, so choose size according to desktop size of your PC) Your new port should then be displayed similar to the circled area on the picture below. In this case, the new port is 18. (your port number could be anything else) Now that you have a functioning VNC-desktop, you need a program to visualise Lilli s desktop. Therefore you need to download the VNC Viewer using the Link below: https://linux.jku.at/vnc/tightvnc-1.2.9-vanilla/vncviewer_tight-1.2.9_mingw32.exe 3
Download VNC Viewer Open file: vncviewer_tight-1.2.9_mingw32.exe A small window will pop up: Enter the IP-adress of Lilli: lilli.edvz.uni-linz.ac.at: The final number after : represents your port. Again, in this case it is 18, but this number depends on what you see in PUTTY using the myvncservers command. Enter your port-number Click OK A new window will pop up: This is your screen using Lilli. You will find the STATA program on the desktop. 4
Double-click the STATA icon Congratulations, you can now start working with STATA. After your work session, close the VNC Viewer and close your port in PUTTY. Type: vncserver kill :18 (instead of 18 use your own port number) 5
Type: vncserver kill :18 (instead of 18 use your own port number) 7
