Forceps CLASSIC LINE One of the greatest obstacles at the inception of microsurgery was finding the instruments that were delicate enough to facilitate the job. Macro instruments were obviously too crude for the tasks in question. And so the quest started for more appropriate instruments, and ended with s development of a CLASSIC LINE a line that is used routinely to this day. The CLASSIC LINE forceps were originally developed out of jeweler s forceps, as they were the finest forceps available. This is still evident in the number that defines a specific version, or in the abbreviation use of "JF", which stands for Jeweler Forceps. Even the very best forceps were, in the case of microsurgery, not good enough. With the help of renowned microsurgeons, modified and adapted these tools to meet the needs of today s microsurgeons. Forceps Looking at the details of the gripping grooves it will be noticed that at the top, where groove meets "median" surface, the angle is only slightly beveled to enhance gripping power while ensuring that surgical gloves will not be damaged. However, the bottom of the grooves have a radius, as dirt will have less chance of accumulating and sticking to a radius as opposed to an inside angle. The gradation and depth of the grooves was designed to ensure that the glove material would form "into" the grooves, again maximizing feel on the instrument. The form of the striage has also been chosen because it does not tire the tactile nerves of the hand. Forceps Forceps by Banis This handy instrument, with its delicate curved tip, is designed for end-to-side anastomosis. It is specifically intended to make the work of the surgeon s left hand easier. In passing the needle it provides internal counter-pressure or external edge-eversion, even at those angles where a forceps would be of little help. It is also an excellent suture tying instrument. These forceps are available in 13.5 and 18 cm flat handle as well as 15 and 18 cm round handle versions. These forceps are widely known as "hockey sticks", due to their easily distinguishable form. Instrument Length It s important to consider the length of the instrument, giving careful consideration to the depth of the surgical field within which you will be working. For example, instruments 11 centimeters in length can only be used comfortably on, or very near the surface. Each additional centimeter of the instrument enables you to work that much deeper. Our longest instruments are designed for procedures that involve deep surgical fields, or in areas where it s not practical to use shorter instruments. Personal preference may also be a consideration as surgeons with larger hands may feel more comfortable using longer instruments. In general, instruments that are 15 cm or shorter are commonly used for hand surgery, while instruments 18 cm or longer are typically used in procedures involving free tissue transfer (free flaps).
