GRAMMAR The Accusative Case This affects your definite and indefinite articles DEFINITE articles are your words for "the" They are: der, die, das, den INDEFINITE articles are your words for "a" or "an" They are: ein, eine, einen We already know how to make the SUBJECT of a sentence. The accusative case makes DIRECT OBJECTS. A D.O. receives the action in the sentence. The girl wears the dress. In the accusative case, der changes to den and ein (when masculine) changes to einen. Some phrases to know when commenting on what someone is wearing: Wie findest du das Hemd? - What do you think of the shirt? Positive Response: Ich finde es fesch. - I think it is stylish. Es sieht schick aus! - It looks chic! Es paßt prima. - It fits great. Es gefällt mir. - I like it. Negative Response: Ich finde es furchtbar. - I think it's terrible. Es sieht blöd aus. - It looks stupid. Es paßt nicht. - It doesn't fit. Es gefällt mir nicht. - I don't like it. Not sure: Ich weiß nicht. - I don't know. Ich bin nicht sicher. - I am not sure. gefallen - to be pleasing to (to like) only will use 2 forms: er/sie/es gefällt mir - I like it. (It is pleasing to me.) sie (pl) gefallen mir - I like them. Direct Object Pronouns (him, her, it) -er, sie, es, sie can mean "he", "she", "it", "they" or just "it" when referring to a noun. (Der Rock ist...; Er ist...) -You also do the same thing when the noun is a direct object, but the pronoun "er" changes to "ihn" Examples: Der Pulli ist sehr preiswert. - The sweater is a real good deal. Ja, er ist nicht teuer. - Yes, it is not expensive. Ich finde den Pulli toll. - I think the sweater is great. Ich finde ihn auch toll. - I also think it is great. -All other pronouns stay the same. Die Bluse ist hübsch. -The blouse is pretty. Ich finde sie scheußlich. - I think it is hideous. Das Hemd kostet 20. - The shirt costs 20 Euro. Ich finde es teuer. - I think it is expensive.
