Was ist Bioinformatik? Was erwarten Sie von dieser Veranstaltung? Dr. Uwe Scholz Folie # 11
Was ist Bioinformatik? Quelle: R. Hofestädt. Yearbook Bioinformatics 2004. deutsche, globale Definition: Einsatz von Informatikmethoden in der Biologie Beeinflussung der Informatik durch die Biologie (genetische Algorithmen, Neuronale Netze, ) The common definition of bioinformatics addresses the application of methods and concepts of computer science in the field of biology. Bioinformatics itself currently stresses three main topics. The first major topic is sequence analysis or genome informatics. Its basic tasks are: assembling, sequence fragments, automatic annotation, and implementation of database systems (EMBL, TRANSFAC, PIR, etc.). The sequence alignment problem still represents the core problem of sequence analysis. However, sequence analysis is not a new topic. It was, and still is, a topic of theoretical biology. Protein design is the second major topic of bioinformatics. There is a strong demand for powerful information systems. Today many different systems, like PIR, PDB or UNIPROT, are available. Major goal of protein design still is to implement a model that will enable the automatic calculation of the 3-D structure, including the prediction of the molecular behaviour, of this protein. Protein design also is not a new research topic. Its roots stem from biophysics and theoretical biology. The third major topic of bioinformatics is metabolic engineering. Its goal is to analyse and synthesise metabolic processes. The basic molecular information of metabolic processes is stored in database systems, like KEGG, Metabolic engineering might evolve as far as to construct a Virtual Cell. Dr. Uwe Scholz Folie # 12
