1 The city of Jena Jena is located in the Saale river valley in the Federal State Thuringia. It is easily reached by train, but has no airport. The two train stations are: Jena Paradies for the north-south-direction (e.g. Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Nuremberg) and Jena West for the east-west-direction (e.g. Frankfurt). >> Getting to Jena by air If you come from America, Asia, Africa and Australia, we recommend flights to Frankfurt International Airport. If you come from Europe you have several flight options. Frankfurt International Airport (305 km) Take the ICE train from the airport ( Fernbahnhof ) to Weimar and change to regional train from Weimar to Jena West. The trains run about every hour. The journey from Frankfurt airport to Jena takes about 3.5 hours. Airport Leipzig (90 km) Take the S-Bahn from the airport train station to Leipzig main train station and then an ICE train to Jena Paradies. The journey from Leipzig airport to Jena takes about 2 hours. Airport Berlin Tegel (250 km) Take the airport bus TXL from the airport to the main train station and then the ICE train to Munich which stops at Jena Paradies. The journey from Berlin Tegel to Jena takes about 3 hours. Airport Berlin Schoenefeld (250 km) This airport is in the South of Berlin and served by low cost flights (Easyjet, Ryanair, Germanwings), airlines from Northern Europe and from Russia. Take S-Bahn S9 to Berlin main train station and then the ICE train to Munich which stops in Jena Paradies. The journey from Berlin Schoenefeld to Jena takes about 3.5 hours. Airport Nuremberg (225 km) Take an underground train (U-Bahn U2) to the main train station and from here the ICE train to Berlin which stops at Jena Paradies. The journey from Nuremberg airport to Jena takes about 2.5 hours. Leipzig-Altenburg Airport (75 km) This airfield is only served by Ryanair from London Stansted. There is an airport shuttle to/from the train station Altenburg and from Altenburg take a regional train to Jena via Gera. The journey from Leipzig-Altenburg to Jena takes about.5 hours. >> Arrival in Jena If you arrive from the Frankfurt/Weimar direction by train, you arrive at the train station Jena West. Exit the station on the side of the main building. Directly in front of the station is a bus stop of line 5, which can take you to the city (and hotel Schwarzer Bär, stop Universität ). The bus ticket costs,70!, tickets can be bought from a machine on the bus, and require coins. During weekdays, the bus usually runs every 20 minutes (see timetable below). Taxis are also located in front of the station. The taxi fare within the city is usually less than 0!. The distance from the train station to downtown Jena is also easily walkable (and safe) on foot.

2 To get from the Jena-West train station directly to the institute, turn left, go underneath the bridge, cross the street at the traffic light, and you will see the bus stop that takes you to the institute (see also information below). If you come by train from the Munich/Leipzig/Berlin direction, you will arrive at the Jena Paradies station. The city and the central bus stops are easily reachable on foot (about 5 minute walk, see map below). To get to the hotel Schwarzer Bär, take tram line, direction Zwätzen to stop Universität. The tram line stop Am Paradiesbahnhof is located a short distance away from the station along the tracks (do not wait at the stop for lines 4, 5, 35, which is directly in front of the station). 3 Accommodation If you stay overnight, a common hotel we use and where you likely are going to stay is the hotel Schwarzer Baer. Its location is marked in the map below. It can be reached by bus and tram (stop Universität ). The hotel has free wireless internet available in most rooms, and also has a very good restaurant within the building. The breakfast buffet is included in the room rate. >> If you stay in the IBIS hotel, the location is very close to the central bus stop. >> Restaurants and bars can be found in the Wagnergasse area or around the centrally located market square. Two shopping centers ( Neue Mitte, Goethegalerie ) can also be found in the city center, and these include supermarkets, groceries, drug stores, etc. How to get to the institute The location of the central bus stop is marked in the map of the city center above. To get to our institute take bus 0 (most frequent number), 3 or and get out at the 6th stop ( Beutenberg Campus ). You need to buy a bus ticket in the bus from the ticket machine (,70!, requires coins). The busses run about every 0 minutes on weekdays, and take about 0 minutes to the Beutenberg Campus stop. From the bus stop, follow the direction of the bus (see map below), take a right, go strait up the hill and then turn to the left at the end of the street." Here you can see our new building with the round tower (about 5-0 min walk). Next to the main entrance (big glass door) is a box where you can ring the bell to get the door opened.
