10 Explanation of Symbols There are several symbols used throughout this text and in labels attached to various parts of the Atomscan Advantage ICP Spectrometer. These labels caution against known hazards or require you to read and familiarize yourself with standard operating procedures for given circumstances. In cases where these circumstances are well documented but beyond the scope of this manual, detailed references are provided. This section of the Safety Guide documents the labeling used on the Atomscan Advantage Spectrometer and in this manual. The "matchbox" transfers the RF signal from the generator to the work coil within which the plasma is created. The internal workings of this device are potentially lethal. Unauthorized entry may result in death. This label will be found on the rear panel of the matchbox. There are no user serviceable parts inside. On no account should the user remove any panels bearing this label. 11 This symbol is found in this manual to warn of UV radiation that is harmful to the eyes. This radiation is produced by the plasma and, during normal operation is screened by both the outer door to the sample compartment and by an inner, interlocked door which provides access to the torch and work coil. Removal of this inner door will immediately cause the plasma to be extinguished. Under no circumstances should any attempt be made to defeat the interlocks. 14 Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy Warning THE PLASMA EMITS INTENSE ULTRA-VIOLET RADIATION WHICH CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO VISION. NEVER LOOK AT THE PLASMA WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION. THE OPERATOR IS PROTECTED BY AN OUTER DOOR AS WELL AS AN INNER DOOR WHICH IS INTERLOCKED. IF THE INNER DOOR IS OPENED, THE PLASMA WILL EXTINGUISH. NEVER ATTEMPT TO DEFEAT ANY INTERLOCKS. Introduction Inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy is a technique for the determination of metallic, semi-metallic and some non-metallic elements by atomic emission spectroscopy. An inductively coupled plasma is an electrical discharge formed in a stream of argon gas flowing through a series of concentric quartz tubes surrounded by a coil. This coil is attached to a relatively powerful radio frequency generator. During plasma ignition, the gas stream is seeded with electrons from an external source, such as a small spark. These electrons are accelerated in a toroidal path by the RF electromagnetic field, and collide with argon atoms to form more electrons and argon ions, which are in turn accelerated. This process continues until the gas becomes highly ionized (a plasma), at which point the discharge is stable and self-sustaining as long as the RF field is applied. The temperature within this toroidal plasma is as high as 10,000 degrees K. 15 Concentric Quartz Tubes Figure 7: Schematic of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Liquid samples are introduced into the plasma discharge as an aerosol suspended in argon gas. This sample aerosol is carried through the center tube of the three quartz tubes comprising the torch assembly. The sample aerosol stream passes through the center of the toroidal plasma discharge, where it is desolvated, atomized, and the resultant element atoms and ions are excited. After excitation, the atoms comprising the sample emit light at their characteristic wavelengths. This light is transmitted by the optical system to the detector. Atomscan Advantage Emission Source The Atomscan Advantage spectrometer's emission source is an Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma (ICAP). The ICAP source is powered by a fully solid state 2kW crystal-controlled radio frequency (RF) generator operating at MHz. The output from the RF generator is coupled to a water-cooled copper induction coil that wraps around the outside of the quartz torch assembly. Argon gas flows through the torch assembly as shown in the next figure. The largest flow of argon (the coolant flow), typically 15 L/minute, passes between the outer and intermediate tubes of the torch. Smaller gas flows pass between the intermediate and center tube (auxiliary flow), typically 0 to 2 L/minute and through the center tube (sample flow), typically 0.6 to 1 L/minute. 16 Sample Flow Auxiliary Coolant Flow Main Coolant Flow (Plasma Gas) Figure 8: ICAP Torch The next figure shows the induction coil wrapped around the radial torch. The piezoelectric igniter which supplies the spark to seed the argon gas with electrons during ignition is embedded in the auxiliary gas delivery tube. This is the black tube leading from the bulkhead fitting to the lower connection on the torch assembly. The metal parts of the these connectors are protected with insulating covers. A fiber optic light pipe which monitors the plasma is located inside the torch compartment. Its function is to shut down the RF supply and provide an error message if the plasma is extinguished. The argon gas lines connected to the nebulizer, outer torch coolant flow, and inner auxiliary flow are also shown. These gas lines are connected to the torch and to the base of the torch compartment with quick-disconnect fittings. The figure also shows the faceplate, complete with protective dark glass window that covers the plasma discharge box and shields the operator from UV light and RF radiation. Four thumbscrews hold this faceplate in place. This faceplate is interlocked by the two diagonally opposite screws. If one of these two faceplate screws is loosened, the RF generator shuts off, and the plasma stops running. Plasma Igniter A wire which runs through the auxiliary gas supply tubing provides the high voltage (30,000 V) spark required for plasma ignition. This tubing is fitted with an insulating sleeve, which must be used to cover the metal gas connector on the body of the torch. When removing the torch, carefully remove the sleeve by gently twisting it while pulling it off the connector. Always be sure to replace the insulating sleeve when reattaching the auxiliary tubing to the torch. The position of the insulating sleeve is shown in the next two figures. The next figure shows the radial torch compartment with the front cover removed. The fiber optic that views the plasma will be seen in the middle of the plate that secures the coil to the rear wall of the matchbox. Except for the axially positioned torch, it is identical to the radial instrument. Mercury Lamp Figure 11: Axial Plasma Torch Compartment The mercury lamp is used for wavelength calibration of the instrument. It moves into place automatically when required, allowing light to pass from the lamp into the entrance slit. The lamp is only on when in use, so that it is unlikely to require replacement in normal use. The Hg lamp is not user serviceable. Light from the mercury lamp is not normally visible through the enclosure. If there are any problems, or if any blue mercury light can be seen in the area where the optical transfer tube, contact your authorized TJA service representative. \ Atom scan Advantage Plasma Emission Spectrometer Safety Guide Page 17 \

IF SERVICE IS REQUIRED, CONTACT AN AUTHORIZED TJA SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE. Electrical Requirements *** CAUTION *** DO NOT PLUG IN YOUR ATOMSCAN ADVANTAGE. WAIT FOR YOUR TJA SERVICE ENGINEER TO CHECK ALL ELECTRICAL SUPPLIES. IN ORDER TO PREVENT INJURY OR DEATH FROM ACCIDENTAL CONTACT WITH HIGH VOLTAGES, DO NOT REMOVE ANY OF THE COVERS FROM YOUR ATOMSCAN ADVANTAGE SPECTROMETER. The power supply unit, located in the lower section of the cabinet is equipped with an 8 foot (2.4 meter) power cord, so the electrical outlet that you supply must be within 8 feet (2.4 m) of the rear of the power unit. 20 The voltages available for the Atomscan Advantage ICAP Spectrometer are 200, 208,220, and 240V at 50/60 Hz and single phase. A dedicated line of 30 amp is required from the main transformer. This line must maintain the required voltage under loaded conditions and must accommodate the current surge during power-up. Satisfactory analytical performance is obtained over ±10 % line voltage fluctuations if analyzing aqueous solutions, and over +10 to -5 % line voltage fluctuations if analyzing organic solutions. *** CAUTION *** THE ATOMSCAN ADVANTAGE IS CONSIDERED A HIGH LEAKAGE CURRENT DEVICE (4.3 MILLIAMPS). MAKE SURE THAT THE NON-CURRENT CARRYING SAFETY GROUND MEETS ALL ELECTRICAL CODE REQUIREMENTS, THUS MINIMIZING GROUND IMPEDANCE. The main spectrometer power cable is shown in the next figure. This must be hard wired directly to the power supply or, alternatively, a plug meeting local codes may be used. Outside the USA, no plug is provided on this cord. The safety ground (green wire with yellow stripe) connected to the power unit is an acceptable ground provided it meets the following National Electrical Code requirements: 1. The ground (green/yellow) wire should be a non-current carrying equipment ground. 2. The wire is connected to an earth ground stake (located at the service entrance of building) or a dedicated ground grid. 3. It is not terminated anywhere into the main power line or into questionable grounded media such as water pipes, conduit pipes, or building "I" beams. 4. Do not connect this equipment wire to the neutral conductor except at the service panel box or isolation transformer. Atomscan Advantage Plasma Emission Spectrometer Safety Guide Page 19

21 The computer and printer as supplied with the instrument are set to operate at local line voltage and receive their power from a wall outlet. No printer is supplied with 220,230 or 240 V systems. Mains Circuit Breaker The mains circuit breaker is located on the right side of the instrument, as viewed from the front. The next figure shows the right side panel of the Atomscan Advantage. Figure 14: Atomscan Advantage side panel showing the main power circuit breaker The red circuit breaker near the rear of the panel is the main power control. It is ON when in the UP position (T) and OFF when in the DOWN position (0). To the left of the main circuit breaker is a small additional circuit breaker. This protects the 115 V feed from the main transformer secondary to the low voltage power supplies. Page 20 Atomscan Advantage Plasma Emission Spectrometer Safety Guide

22 RF Generator *** Warning *** THE RF GENERATOR SHOULD NEVER BE OPENED OR UNCOVERED BY UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL. IT CONTAINS POTENTIALLY FATAL VOLTAGES THAT CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURY OR DEATH. The RF generator is located in the center of the lower portion of the Atomscan Advantage cabinet. It is regulated to accommodate a ± 10% variation in the nominal input voltage. This module generates the RF energy that sustains the plasma. The next figure shows a rear view of the Atomscan Advantage, with the RF generator visible in the center of the lower chassis. RF Generator Circuit Breaker Figure 15: Atomscan Advantage rear view showing RF Generator The RF generator is equipped with its own circuit breaker, which you should never use in normal operation. If this breaker should ever trip, call your authorized TJA service representative immediately. Do not reset it yourself. Tripping of this breaker indicates a serious problem within the generator. RF Generator Air Filter Under normal circumstances, the air filter for the RF generator should be cleaned every 6 months. In dusty environments, this may require more frequent attention. Proceed as follows. SHUT OFF THE INSTRUMENT. Turn off the main circuit breaker on the right side of the instrument. Open the plasma compartment door and locate the screw that holds the cover of the monochromator compartment closed. This is shown in the next figure. 23 Figure 16: Locating the monochromator cover locking screw. Remove the screw and raise the monochromator cover. Use the prop rod to keep it in the raised position as shown in the next figure. Be sure to insert the end of the prop rod into the hole to ensure that the cover remains stable. Figure 17: Holding the monochromator cover in the raised position. Locate the filter. It is mounted in a metal carrier which can be identified by the two holes. Insert a thumb and finger into these holes and pull the filter out as shown in the next figure. 24 Figure 18: Removing the RF generator filter Remove the two screws holding the filter element in place, and remove the element. Blow out the dust with compressed air. Alternatively, wash the filter element, then dry it thoroughly before replacing it in the holder. Replace the filter in the instrument. Ensure that the holder is correctly placed in the guide slots, then push it firmly down until it is fully seated. Service Connections Service connections for inert gas and power are on the rear of the instrument, as shown in the next figure: Plasma gas Purge gas Heat Exchanger for Water Recirculator Figure 19: Service Connections to Rear of Instrument Connect argon for the plasma to the LEFT fitting (as viewed from the rear) and nitrogen for the purge gas to the RIGHT fitting. If you wish to use argon for both purge and plasma gas, you may use a "T" to connect both inlets to the same gas supply line (as is shown in the illustration). 25 Computer Connection The Atomscan Advantage is connected to the host computer by a serial cable, which is plugged into the 9 pin Sub-D socket on the left side of the instrument (as seen from the front). This is shown in the next figure. Host computer connection Cooling the Plasma Coil Figure 20: Computer connection cable Cooling water for the induction coil is provided by a built-in recirculation system. A reservoir is located on the rear panel, just to the left of the exhaust duct (as viewed from the rear of the instrument). It is readily accessed from the right side. The reservoir is shown in the next figure. Figure 21: Coolant reservoir on rear panel Check this reservoir every day to ensure that the water level is near the Max mark. To refill the reservoir, lift the metal carrier to disengage it from the slots. Remove the bottle and, holding the cap, unscrew the bottle by turning it counterclockwise. Alternatively, disconnect the lines by pressing the locking tab on each one in turn and removing the coolant line. Then, with the bottle still in place, unscrew the cap. Fill the bottle with distilled water. Note that the two fittings are different, so that you cannot confuse the inlet and outlet when replacing them. A third way to fill the bottle is to use a wash bottle with a fine nozzle to squirt water through the vent hole, which is found between the two fittings. 26 Waste Removal Waste is removed from the Atomscan Advantage using one channel of the 4 channel peristaltic pump. The drain line exits from the side of the instrument to the 9-liter bottle that is supplied with the instrument It should be placed on the floor to the right side of the instrument. A small hole, just large enough for the capillary tube to pass through should be bored through the bottle cap. The cap should remain on the waste bottle at all times except when it is being emptied. Pumping the drain is a convenient way of removing waste without the operator having to be concerned with smooth operation of a gravity drain. Figure 22: Recommended Dram Configuration Place marble chips in the drain bottle to neutralize most of the acids deposited into the container. Venting Requirements- Radial Plasma During operation, the torch exhaust gases must be vented in order to prevent the introduction of potentially poisonous or corrosive materials into the laboratory air. The vent must also be on at all times to ensure adequate heat removal from the torch compartment. The torch exhaust is immediately above the plasma discharge, from where it is directed to the rear panel of the instrument. The vent is interlocked by both a flow sensor in the duct and by a thermal sensor in the torch compartment. These interlocks are in addition to the two faceplate interlock switches. If any of these interlocks are interrupted, an error message will appear in the Plasma status panel and the plasma, if it is on, will extinguish. The venting system must be capable of drawing 150 cubic feet/min. (4.2 m 3 /min), at the instrument and the ducting material should be stainless steel. A satisfactory blower and vent assembly is available from TJA as part number xxxxxxxx for 115V/60 Hz, as xxxxxxxx for 220V/60 Hz, and as number xxxxxxxx for 220V/50 Hz. To install your venting system, use sheet metal screws, or silver solder to connect the vent components. DO NOT USE SOFT, LEAD-TIN SOLDER. If your vent system is connected into a chemical hood duct, take special care to prevent acid fumes from back flowing into the spectrometer. The RF generator is vented from the lower rear center of the cabinet, as shown in the next figure. The all solid state generator does not generate sufficient heat to warrant a separate vent. Check with your local building inspector regarding ordinance requirements for vent systems. The torch vent assembly can be seen inside the sample compartment. Note that there are accessible surfaces that can become very hot. These are identified by the warning symbol, as shown in the next figure. *** WARNING *** THE UPPER PORTION OF THE TORCH BOX VENT ASSEMBLY IS ACCESSIBLE INSIDE THE SAMPLE COMPARTMENT. 29 Venting Requirements- Axial Plasma During operation, the torch exhaust gases must be vented in order to prevent the introduction of potentially poisonous or corrosive materials into the laboratory air. The vent must also be on at all times to ensure adequate heat removal from the torch compartment. The torch exhaust is immediately above the plasma discharge, from where it is directed to the rear panel of the instrument. The vent is interlocked by both a flow sensor in the duct and by a thermal sensor in the torch compartment. These interlocks are in addition to the two faceplate interlock switches. If any of these interlocks are interrupted, an error message will appear in the Plasma status panel and the plasma, if it is on, will extinguish. The venting system must be capable of drawing 170 cubic feet/min (4.7 m 3 /min) at the instrument. The ducting material should be stainless steel. To install your venting system, use sheet metal screws or silver solder to connect the vent components. DO NOT USE SOFT, LEAD-TIN SOLDER. If your vent system is connected into a chemical hood duct, take special to prevent acid fumes from flowing back into the spectrometer. The RF generator is vented from the lower rear center of the cabinet, as shown in the next figure. The all solid state generator does not generate sufficient heat to warrant a separate vent. We recommend that you check with your local building inspector regarding ordinance requirements for vent systems. The torch vent assembly can be seen inside the sample compartment. Note that there are accessible surfaces that can become very hot. These are identified by the warning symbol, as shown in the next figure. Waste Handling Requirements The Atomscan Advantage features a pumped drain, so that there is no drain trap and no need to partially fill the waste bottle to form a liquid trap. Waste is pumped through a capillary tube attached to the outlet of the spray chamber. Collect the waste sample in the bottle supplied with the spectrometer. Place this waste bottle at the right of the instrument below the sample shelf. It is recommended that you bore a very small hole in the lid of the bottle, just large enough for the capillary to fit through. Neutralize any acidic waste by placing marble chips into the waste bottle; this procedure prevents acid fumes from escaping into the laboratory atmosphere. 41 Verklaring van de symbolen Er worden verschillende symbolen gebruikt in deze tekst en op labels op verscheidene onderdelen van de Atomscan Advantage ICP spectrometer. Deze labels waarschuwen voor bekende gevaren of eisen van u dat u de standaard bedienings voorschriften leest en u zich daarmee bekend maakt voor bepaalde omstandigheden. In de gevallen waar deze omstandigheden goed zijn omschreven maar buiten de doelstelling van deze handleiding vallen, worden gedetailleerde referenties gegeven. Dit hoofdstuk van de veiligheids handleiding beschrijft de labels zoals die gebruikt worden op de Atomscan Advantage Spectrometer en in deze handleiding. De 'matchbox' zend het RF signaal naar de spoel waarin het plasma gecreeerd wordt. De interne werking van deze eenheid zijn mogelijkerwijs levensgevaarlijk. 42 Dit symbool wordt in deze handleiding gevonden om te waarschuwen tegen UV straling die schadelijk is voor de ogen. Deze straling wordt door het plasma geproduceerd en wordt gedurende normaal gebruik afgeschermd door zowel de buitenste toegangs deur tot het monster compartiment als door een binnenste, die beveiligd is en toegang geeft tot de spoel en toorts. Verwijdering van de binnenste deur heeft het onmiddellijk doven van het plasma tot gevolg. In geen enkel geval zou geprobeerd moeten worden om de beveiligingen buiten werking te stellen. 45 Inductief Gekoppeld Plasma Emissie Spectrometrie *** WAARSCHUWING *** Het plasma emitteert een intense ultraviolette straling die blijvende schade aan het gezichtsvermogen kan veroorzaken. Kijk nooit rechtstreeks in het plasma zonder enige bescherming van de ogen. De gebruiker wordt beschermd door een buiten en een binnen deur die beveiligd is. AIs de binnen deur geopend wordt, dooft het plasma. Probeer nooit beveiligingen onklaar te ma ken. Introductie Inductief gekoppeld plasma spectrometrie is een techniek voor de bepaling van metallische, semimetallische en enkele niet metallische elementen door middel van atomaire emissie spectrometrie. Een inductief gekoppeld plasma is een elektrische ontlading die gevormd wordt in stroom van argon gas door een aantal concentrische kwarts buizen, omringd door een spoel. Deze spoel is verbonden aan een relatief krachtige Radio Frequence generator. Gedurende het opstarten van het plasma, wordt de argon stroom geladen met elektronen van een externe bron, bijvoorbeeld een kleine vonk. Deze elektronen worden versneld in een toroidale weg door het RF elektromagnetische veld en die botsen met argon atomen om zodoende meer vrije elektronen en argon ionen te vormen, die op him beurt weer versneld worden. Dit proces gaat door totdat het gas in hoge mate geioniseerd is (een plasma) waarbij de ontlading stabiel en zelf onderhoudend wordt zolang het RF veld aanwezig blijft. De temperatuur in dit toroidale plasma kan tot K oplopen. 46 Concentrische Kwarts Buizen Figtwr 6: Schema van een inductiefgekoppeld plasma Vloeistof monsters worden in het plasma gebracht als een in argon gas gesuspendeerd aerosol. Dit aerosol monster wordt door de binnenste van de drie kwarts buizen, die gezamenlijk de toorts vormen, geleid. De aerosol monsterstroom wordt door het centrum van het totridale plasma gevoerd waar het wordt gedesolveerd, geatomiseerd en de daaruit resulterende atomen en ionen worden geexciteerd. Na ecxitatie zenden de atomen van het monster licht uit op voor hen karakteristieke golflengten. Dit licht wordt door het optische systeem naar de detector geleid. Atomscan Advantage Emissie Bron De emissie bron van de Atomscan Advantage spectrometer is een Inductief Gekoppeld Argon Plasma (Inductively Coupled Argon Plasma - ICAP). De ICAP bron krijgt zijn vermogen van een 2 kw kristal gecontroleerde radio frequentie (RF) generator die bij of MHz functioneert. Het uitgaande vermogen van de RF generator is gekoppeld aan een water gekoelde koperen spoel die de buitenste kwarts buis van de toorts omringt. Argon gas stroomt door de toorts zoals aangegeven in het figuur 7. De grootste stroom argon (het 'koelgas') met typisch 15 L/min, gaat tussen de buitenste en daar binnen liggende buizen. Kleinere gasstromen gaan tussen de middelste buis en de binnenste buis (auxiliary stroom), typische 0 to 2 L/min en door de binnenste buis (monster stroom) met typisch 0,6 tot 1 L/min. De pie'zo-electrische ontsteker welke de vonk opwekt om het argon te ontsteken is ingebouwd in de hulp gas afvoer slang. Dit is de zwarte slang welke van doorvoer connector naar de onderste aansluiting in de toorts kamer gaat. De metalen onderdelen van deze aansluitingen zijn geisoleerd. De fiber licht pijp welke het plasma bewaakt om de hoog spanning uit te schakelen en een fout signaal te generen wanneer het plasma uitgaat; en de argon gas leidingen welke zijn aangesloten aah de verstuiver, plasma gas stroom en de hulp koel gas stroom. Deze gas leidingen zijn aangesloten aan de toorts en de bodemplaat van het toorts compartiment met snelkoppelingen. Het figuur toont niet het donkere glas venster welke de toorts compartiment afsluit en de bediener beschermt van het UV licht en RF straling. Vier duimschroeven houden dit venster op zijn plaats en twee schroeven zijn beveiligd met een veiligheidsschakelaars. Onder geen enkele omstandigheid mag gepoogt worden om in het plasma te kijken anders dan door het speciaal behandelde glas venster op de beschermde dcur. Probcer nooit de veilighcidsschakelaars te overbruggen. Het volgende figuur toont de radiale toorts kamer met de voorplaat verwijderd. De fiber welke in het plasma kijkt is te zien in het midden van de plaat welke de spoel op de achterkant van de 'matchbox' bevestigd. Behalve voor de axiaal gepositioneerde toorts, is deze identiek aan het radiale instrument. Kwik Lamp Figure 10: Axiale Plasma Toorts Kamer De kwik lamp wordt gebruikt om het instrument te profieleren. Het beweegt desgewenst automatisch naar zijn juiste plaats, zodat het licht van de lamp door de entree spleet valt. Deze lamp is alleen aan als deze moet wordt gebruikt, zodat het onwaarschijnlijk is om deze te vervangen tijdens normaal gebruik. De kwik lamp kan niet door de gebruiker vervangen worden. Het licht van de kwik lamp is normaal niet te zien door de omhuising. Als er problemen zijn of het blauwe kwik licht is zichtbaar, contacteer dan uw TJA service vertegenwoordiging. 50 *** WAARSCHUWING *** Direct in de kwik lamp kijken veroorzaakt permanente oog beschadiging. Probeer onder geen enkele omstandigheid de kwik lamp behuizing te openen. Als service noodzakelijk is, contacteer een geauthoriseerde TJA service vertegemvoordiging. Electnsche Aansluitingen *** GEVAAR *** Schakel uw ATOMSCAN ADVANTAGE nict in. Wacht op uw TJA service engineer om alle electrische voedingen te controleren. Om letsel of dood te voorkomen door per ongeluk de hoog spanningen aan te raken, verwijder geen van de panelen van uw ATOMSCAN ADVANTAGE spectrometer. De voedings eenheid, aan de onderkant van het cabinet, is uitgerust met een 2.5 meter netsnoer, zodat het stopcontact welke aanwezig moet zijn, zich ook binnen 2.5 meter van de achterkant van de voedings eenheid bevind. 51 De spanning voor de Atomscan Advantage ICAP spectrometer kunnen 200, 208, 220 en 240V bij 50/60 Hz en enkel fase zijn. Een speciale leiding van 30 amp is noodzakelijk direct van de meterkast. Deze leiding moet de vereiste spanning vasthouden onder voile belasting en tijdens het inschakelen. Bevredigende analytische resultaten worden nog gehaald bij een ±10% lijn spannings fluctuatie wanneer waterige oplossingen worden geanalyseerd, en bij een +10% en -5% spannings fluctuatie wanneer organische oplossingen worden geanalyseerd. *** GEVAAR *** De IRIS ADVANTAGE wordt bcschouwd als een hoge lekstroom instrument (4.3 milliampere). Zorg dat de niet stroom dragende veiligheids aarding aan alle electnsche veiligheids normen voldoet, dus minimum aardings weerstand. Het hoofd spectrometer netsnoer wordt getoond in figuur 11. Deze moet vast op het net worden aangesloten of door middel van een goed gekeurde netstekker. Buiten de VS word geen netstekker meegeleverd voor de kabel. De veiligheids aarde (groen met gele strepen) aangesloten op de voedings eenheid is een acceptabele aarding wanneer het voldoet aan de nationale electrische normen: 1. De aard (geel/groen) draad moet een niet stroom dragende instrument aarde zijn. 2. De aard draad is aangesloten aan een aardstrip of een speciaal aardpunt. 3. De aarding mag in geen geval aangesloten worden op inferieure plaatsen als CV leidingen, water leidingen of metalen constructie balken. 52 4. De aarding mag in geen geval op de nul leiding van het electrisiteits net aangesloten worden, behalve als dit op de secundaire zijde van een net-scheidings trafo wordt gedaan. De computer en printer welke meegeleverd wordt met het instrument zijn ingesteld om te werken op de lokale spanning en ontvangen hun spanning uit het stopcontact. Geen printer wordt meegeleverd met 220,230 of 240 V systemen. Hoofdschakel De hoofdschakelaar bevind zich aan de rechterkant van het, gezien vanaf de voorkant. Het volgende figuur toont de rechter zijpaneel van de Atomscan Advantage. Het is AAN in de BOVEN positie (I) en UIT in de BENEDEN positie (0). Aan de linker kant van de hoofdschakelaar is een kliene schakelaar. 53 RF Generator *** WAARSCHUWING *** DE RF GENERATOR MAG NOOIT GEOPEND WORDEN DOOR NIET GEKWALIFICEERD PERSONEEL. DE GENERATOR BEVAT POTENTIEEL GEVAARLIJKE SPANNINGEN WELKE ERNSTIGE VERWONDINGEN OF ZELFS DE DOOD KUNNEN VEROORZAKEN. De RF generator is gelocaliseerd in het centrum van het onderste gedeelte van de Atomscan Advantage behuizing. De generator is intern gereguleerd om ± 10% van de nominale netspanning variatie te kunnen afvangen. Deze module genereerd RF energie welke het plasma in stand houdt. Het volgende figuur toont de achterkant van de Atomscan Advantage, met de RF generator zichtbaar in het midden van de onderkant van het instrument. Open de plasma compartiment deur en localiseer de schroef welke het deksel van het monochromator compartiment afsluit. Dit wordt getoond in het volgende figuur.
