3 K A Abstract Let S G/K be = a Riemannian symmetric space of non-compact type with base point xo- A flat in S is a maximal, totally geodesic submanifold with sectional curvature zero. A Weyl chamber in S is an (open) cone in a flat of 5. The set CS of all Weyl Chambers of S is defined and is shown to be a trivial bündle over S. The Weyl chamber flow is a certain action of an abelian subgroup A of G on CS. The corresponding orbit space can be identified with the set of all (directed) flats and carries a natural symplectic structure. For a marked, regulär geodesic triangle in 5 there exists a congruent one, ABC, with vertex A = x0 and AB in a chosen Weyl chamber c0 with apex x0. There is an a _ such that B = ax0. The regulär geodesic AC lies in a chamber c kco for k = 6 K. A marked triangle is a congruence class of marked, regulär geodesic triangles. For a marked triangle appropriate notions of side and angle are defined using a A, k _ and the group M* of all isometries that fix c0. To every marked triangle are associated six geometrie quantities, namely three sides ai, a2, 83 and three angles ki, k2, k3. It turns out, that two marked, regulär geodesic triangles are congruent if and only if two sides and the enclosed angle of one triangle coincide with the corresponding elements of the other. This is the exact generalization of the classical congruence theorem SAS in hyperbolic geometry. Thus, a marked triangle is determined, for example, by a^ki and a2. By trigonometry of S is meant a (minimal) set of functional relations which allows to deduce from the three defining quantities of a triangle the three remaining ones. In classical geometry these are the sine and the cosine laws. In the present dissertation this laws are generalized to all (irreducible) Riemannian symmetric spaces of non-compact type. The basic tool that is used is a fundamental relation in the Weyl chamber bündle CS of S. The generalized cosine laws are obtained by using Invariant Theory and the Cartan decomposition of G. In hyperbolic geometry the sine laws can be interpreted as an integral of the geodesic flow (the angle of parallelism of a geodesic). The corresponding

4 generalizations are integrals of the Weyl chamber flow. Such integrals are constructed (the subtended angle of a flat) and the generalized sine laws deduced from them. Finally, some examples are given illustrating the general coneepts. 11

5 A Kurzfassung Sei 5 = G/K ein symmetrischer Raum vom nichtkompakten Typ mit Basispunkt _0- Ein Flach in 5 ist eine maximale, total geodätische Unter mannigfaltigkeit mit Schnittkrummung null. Eine Weylkammer in 5 ist ein (offener) Kegel in einem Flach. Die Menge CS aller Weylkammern wird definiert und es wird gezeigt, dass sie ein triviales Bündel über S ist. Der Weylkammer-Fluss ist eine gewisse Aktion einer abelschen Untergruppe A von G auf CS. gerichteten trägt eine natürliche symplektische Struktur. Der entsprechende Orbitraum kann mit der Menge der Flachs identifiziert werden. Er Zu einem markierten, regulären geodätischen Dreieck in S gibt es stets ein kongruentes, ABC, dessen eine Ecke A mit x0 zusammenfällt und dessen Seite AB in einer fest gewählten Weylkammer cq mit Spitze x0 liegt. Es ist B = ax0 für ein a G A. Die reguläre Geodätische AC liegt Weylkammer c = kc0 mit k K. Ein markiertes Dreieck ist geodätischer Dreiecke in S. Verallgemeinerungen der Begriffe wird ausser den obigen Gruppenelementen a _ in einer eine Kongruenzklasse markierter, regulärer Für ein markiertes Dreieck werden geeignete "Seite" imd "Winkel" definiert. Dazu Gruppe M* aller Isometrien, welche c0 festlassen, benutzt. und k K noch die Jedem markierten Dreieck werden sechs Grossen zugeordnet, nämlich drei Seiten a1? a2, a3 und drei Winkel kl5 k2, k3. Es zeigt sich, dass zwei markierte, reguläre geodätische Dreiecke genau dann kongruent sind, wenn zwei Seiten und der dazwischen liegende Winkel des einen Dreiecks mit den entsprechenden stimmen. Dieser Satz ist die exakte Verallgemeinerung Kongruenzsatzes SWS der hyperbolischen Geometrie. Elementen des andern überein des klassischen Ein markiertes (reguläres) Dreieck ist also zum Beispiel durch ai,ki und a2 bestimmt. Unter Trigonometrie von S wird ein (minimales) System von Funktionalrelationen verstanden, durch welches die übrigen Winkel aus den Bestimmungsstücken berechnet werden können. Seiten und In der klassischen Geometrie sind dies die Sinus- und Cosinus-Sätze. Diese Sätze werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit auf alle (irreduziblen) symmetrischen Räume vom nichtkompakten Typ verallgemeinert. m

6 Als grundlegendes Hilfmittel dient dabei eine zu jedem regulären Dreieck assozierte Fundamentalrelation im Weylkammer-Bündel CS. Die verallgemeinerten Cosinus-Sätze werden mittels Invariantentheorie und der Cartan-Zerlegung von G hergeleitet. Die Sinus-Sätze der hyperbolischen Geometrie können als Integral des geodätischen Flusses interpretiert werden (Parallelwinkel von Geodätischen). Die entsprechenden Verallgemeinerungen sind Integrale des Weylkammerflusses. Solche Integrale werden konstruiert (Blickwinkel von Flachs) und die verallgemeinerten Sinus-Sätze daraus abgeleitet. Einige Beispiele illustrieren schliesslich die allgemeinen Konzepte. iv
