1 , M.A. hamburg.de Outline of the Ph. D. Thesis Prosody in Spanish Portuguese Contact This Ph. D. thesis deals with prosody in Spanish Portuguese contact. Its main goal is to investigate the intonation and the speech rhythm of the varieties of Spanish and Portuguese spoken in the small town Olivenza (Extremadura, Spain), located close to the Portuguese border. Due to the long lasting period of Spanish Portuguese bilingualism in this frontier area, it is hypothesized that Olivenza Spanish and Olivenza Portuguese are influenced by one another. In order to detect the traces of the long standing contact in both intonation and speech rhythm, Olivenza Spanish and Olivenza Portuguese are compared to Standard European Portuguese and Castilian Spanish. In a first step, I establish the inventory of pitch accents and boundary tones of Olivenza Spanish and Olivenza Portuguese, using the ToBI labeling system, a labeling convention elaborated on the basis of the Autosegmental Metrical (AM) model of intonational phonology. In addition, I analyze the two varieties with respect to their rhythmic properties, taking into account the variability of vocalic and consonantal intervals as well as the proportion of vocalic material in the speech signal. In a second step, I contrast the tonal and durational properties of Olivenza Spanish and Olivenza Portuguese with those of Standard European Portuguese and Castilian Spanish in order to detect possible Portuguese and Spanish influence, respectively. The comparison between the two contact varieties, Olivenza Spanish and Olivenza Portuguese, aims to make a contribution to the research field Prosody in language contact and to provide answers to questions such as: Which kinds of prosodic features are transferred in situations of language contact? Is speech rhythm or intonation more sensitive to language contact and thus more likely to be transferred? Which theoretical frameworks can account for the results obtained from the analyses performed on the data?
