2 Probability of a protein being synthesized by chance typical protein has 100 amino acids there are 20 different amino acids there are different amino acid sequences of this length this is: 1.3 * the probability that this protein evolved by chance is: 0.7 * so, this (and all other) proteins can't have evolved by trying out all possibilities 2

3 Gedankenexperiment let's take a protein solution at 1 mmol this is 6 * molecules per liter times the volume of the ocean: 0.7 * 4 * π (6000 km) 2 * 1500 m = 5 * ltr this is 3 * molecules on earth synthesize them newly every second (by mutation or whatever) and multiply it by the age of the universe: 10 * 10 9 years = 3 * seconds gives a total of 9 * molecules synthesized 3
