Er ist auf den Bereich internationale Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit (Handels- und Investitionsschutzschiedsgerichtsbarkeit) spezialisiert und war in über sechzig Schiedsverfahren als Parteivertreter und Schiedsrichter tätig, sowohl in ad hoc (z.b. UNCITRAL) als auch in institutionellen Verfahren (ICC, ICSID, Swiss Rules, LCIA, AAA/ICDR) und unter Anwendung verschiedenster Rechtsordnungen, darunter diejenigen der Schweiz, Frankreichs, Deutschlands, Englands, des Staates New York und der Türkei. Joachim Knoll verfügt über umfangreiche Erfahrung in Wirtschaftsstreitigkeiten, insbesondere des internationalen Warenkaufes und -vertriebs, ferner in den Bereichen Anlagenbau, Energiewirtschaft, Mining, Telekommunikation und Luftfahrt. Joachim Knoll berät darüber hinaus im Zusammenhang mit schiedsrechtsrelevanten Fragestellungen wie dem Verfassen von Schiedsklauseln und der Anfechtung und Vollstreckung von Schiedssprüchen. Insbesondere berät er auch Regierungen bezüglich der Abfassung und Verhandlung von Investitionsschutzabkommen, sowie Investoren bezüglich der Strukturierung von Investitionen mit dem Ziel eines effektiven Rechtsschutzes auf der Ebene des internationalen Rechts. Joachim Knoll ist in The International Who's Who of Commercial Arbitration aufgeführt. Er war Mitglied des Schiedsgerichtshofes der Swiss Chambers' Arbitration Institution, welcher Schiedsverfahren gemäss der Internationalen Schweizerischen Schiedsordnung (Swiss Rules) verwaltet. Von 2010 bis 2012 war er Co-chair von ASA below 40, der Gruppe junger Juristen der Schweizerischen Vereinigung für Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit. Ferner ist er Mitglied der Fakultät und des Academic Council der Swiss Arbitration Academy und spricht regelmässig auf Konferenzen und veröffentlicht zu Themen der Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit. Seit 1999 war Joachim Knoll im Bereich internationale Schiedsgerichtsbarkeit in Frankreich in den Kanzleien Shearman & Sterling in Paris (1999-2006) und in der Schweiz bei LALIVE (2006-2008) und Brown&Page (2008-2012) in Genf tätig.
