Welcome to Humboldt Graduate School Willkommen an der Humboldt Graduate School The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide young researchers with an excellent framework for their work by offering a broad and comprehensive education. Our offers are primarily designed for doctoral candidates of our member programs. Doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin who are not a member of Humboldt Graduate School, are also welcome to participate last minute if places were available. With our offers we intend to support young researchers in managing their dissertation project, enhancing key competencies and defining career goals. The Excellence Initiative enabled us to enlarge our program of workshops that are open to all doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and free of charge. Those cover topics that mainly support the doctoral process. We also have special offers for postdoctoral researchers but they should feel free to participate in workshops that are announced to doctoral candidates in their third year of PhD studies. In our rubric on demand we present a number of workshop that can be scheduled if requested. You are welcome to approach us with any further topics you might be interested in. In the knowledge that providing good care is required for a successful doctorate, the Humboldt Graduate School also provides supervisors the opportunity to professionalize for this demanding task. Let yourself be inspired by our brochure to join the appropriate workshop. Should you have special wishes or suggestions, we will be happy to respond. We would be delighted to support you and wish you every success with your projects. 4 TRAINING COACHING MENTORING WELCOME WILLKOMMEN 5

Do you sometimes wonder why you run around the whole day and still feel like you got nothing done? Do some of your to dos just wander from list to list? This program is for those of us who tend to leave things for later, to not get started until the deadline looms threateningly over our heads. In this program you actually get things done. We won t only talk about the whys and design strategies : you are actually going to work on your to dos and get them off the list. The core of the program is the get it done session, a special kind of co-working designed to improve your focus and motivation. An introductory 1-day time-management workshop includes the first practical get it done session and lets you experience the method and understand why it works. Besides, you learn techniques to improve your performance between the sessions. During two more virtual get it done sessions (you participate from your office or home) you keep working on your projects while practicing the techniques until they feel like second nature. In the final follow-up we discuss what went well and what still needs to be improved. We work through all topics and wishes of the participants with group coaching. You leave the program with a new motivation and concrete, tailored solutions. Trainer: Dr. Adam Wilkins Date: 13. 14.06.2016 (Dahlem Research School) or 07. 08.12.2016 (Humboldt Graduate School) Target Group: Candidates in all years of PhD studies When does the deletion of a band on a blot constitute misconduct, or even fraud? What about selecting and reporting a very unusual result as being representative of the data? How should I react if I have the suspicion that scientists in my laboratory environment are behaving badly? In our seminar we will discuss the topics listed below. My ultimate goal for this seminar is to sensitize you to the issue of good scientific practice, and explore what it means for your own work. Responsibilities of Research Supervisors and Trainees Data Management (including image manipulation) Publication Practices Authorship Peer Review and Privileged Information Collaborations Human Subjects Research Financial Conflicts of Interest How to react in case of suspected misconduct ( whistleblowing ) Trainer: Dr. Matteo Garavoglia Date: 18. 19.01.2016 or 17. 18.10.2016 Target Group: Candidates in the 3 rd year of PhD studies The seminar aims at preparing you for the thesis defense by honing your presentation skills so you can argue your points convincingly and think on your feet during the question and answers session. Responding to typical questions which may come up during the defense will also be practiced in simulated scenarios. Furthermore the workshop will provide necessary information about the formal procedure, the requirements and social setting of a PhD examination. Selecting a committee: what should I take into account? The Do s and Don ts in oral PhD examinations How do I argue and convince people of my academic achievements? How do I deal with stage fright? How do I structure the preparation phase most effectively? How do I stay motivated in the final stretch? 24 TRAINING COACHING MENTORING NATURAL AND LIFE SCIENCES NATUR UND LEBENSWISSENSCHAFTEN 25

PUBLISHING IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES Trainer: Barbara Handke Date: 29. 30.09.2016 Target Group: Candidates in the 3 rd year of PhD studies and Postdocs This seminar covers the requirements of writing specific English, from structuring the paper according to standards in the humanities and social sciences; including essential elements in the introduction and conclusion; writing coherent paragraphs; and incorporating key words and concepts into the text. We also analyze abstracts and titles, and discuss publishing strategies such as journal analysis, writing submission letters to editors and responding to requests for revisions. Finally, we implement the theory of sentence revision by correcting writing samples of the participants. Write an introduction that captures their readership s attention by stating the central thematic concepts of the paper, and a conclusion that restates the claim and solution; Revise their paper s structure, sections, paragraphs and sentences according to English language norms; Analyze journals in their field to find the best fit for their paper; Build in transitional elements to aid their reader s comprehension; Craft an attention-getting yet appropriate abstract and title; Write successful submission and revision letters to editors; Revise their sentences using practical and easy-to-understand revision strategies (such as making subjects short and concrete characters in a story, putting actions into verbs, avoiding excessive nominalizations, putting old before new information etc.); Use important English grammatical principles (such as using articles properly, avoiding dangling modifiers, pruning unnecessary verbiage, and creating parallel structure).
