Funktion der LED (Light Emitting Diode) Um verschiedene Farben zu erhalten, werden verschiedene Halbleiterkristalle ausgewählt, die durch die Stoffzusätze verschieden grosse, verbotene Zonen ausbilden. Dadurch müssen verschieden grosse Energien für die Rekombination der Ladungsträger aufgebracht werden und damit letztendlich verschiedene Licht-Wellenlängen abgegeben werden. Charakteristisch ist das Emittieren eines sehr schmalen Bandes. Folglich emittiert eine LED nur Licht in nur einem sehr engen Band einer bestimmten Farbe. Um weißes Licht als die Summe vieler Farben zu erzeugen, muss man andere Wege beschreiten. Aber ein Vorteil ist auch, dass keine anderen Strahlungen wie IR oder UV auftreten und als kompakt aufgebauter Festkörper ist die LED stoßund vibrations-unempfindlich.
