"The EPIA forecast with regards to the additional (global) photovoltaic capacity in 2011 is north of 20 gigawatts," Ingmar Wilhelm said in an interview at an international photovoltaic conference in northern Italy. "We had 17 GW of additional capacity in 2010, that should increase to 20 25 GW in 2011," Wilhelm said. Five markets are expected to add more than 1 GW of photovoltaic capacity, which turns sunlight into power, in 2011. These include Germany and Italy, the world's two largest markets, China, the United States and Japan, he said. "I expect we will have for the first time ever in 2011 five markets with the capacity

addition of over 1 GW a year. That shows a broad momentum behind the industry," he said, adding the number of such markets will rise to 10 in the next few years. Italy is expected to add 5 6 GW of new installed photovoltaic capacity this year, but it will depend on a new incentive scheme the government is yet to unveil, Wilhelm said. Italy's solar market has boomed since 2007 when the government boosted production incentives, attracting the world's biggest photovoltaic module makers. The government wants to cut the generous support to ease the burden on consumers, who pay for the incentives in power bills. Rome was due to approve a new incentive decree by the end of April but the government is still ironing out its details. [ID:nLDE73R0WV] [ID:nN29138394] Wilhelm said major solar markets will start reaching so called grid parity when solar energy production becomes competitive with traditional power generation and would no longer need incentives at around 2015 2016. "We see China's demand at 3 4 GW next year," LDK Solar Chief Executive and Chairman Xiaofeng Peng told an international photovoltaic conference in northern Italy on Monday. Peng then told Reuters that Chinese solar power demand is estimated at least at 1 GW this year, while global solar power demand is seen by his company at 19 GW "under a conservative view" this year and this number could rise. The European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) expects China to be among five markets to add more than 1 GW of new photovoltaic capacity in 2011, the association's chairman told Reuters on Monday. [ID:nLDE7411BW] Last week, LDK Solar Co, a vertically integrated solar company listed in the United States, cut its first quarter revenue forecast due to lower than expected module shipments, sending the shares 2 percent lower. [ID:nN26293732] Peng told Reuters on Monday there had been delays in shipments of modules to Italy due to regulatory uncertainty about the government's new incentive plan, but lower first quarter revenues would be compensated for in the second quarter. "There is no effect on the full year revenues, our full year revenue forecast is the same. Revenues from the first quarter will move to the second quarter," Peng said. LDK last week stuck to its full year revenue target of $3.5 billion to $3.7 billion. LDK products such as wafers and cells are used to build photovoltaic solar modules

that turn sunlight into electricity. The company has benefited from expanding into making the industry's key raw material, polysilicon, as well as selling its own modules. "I think it has more effect on the second quarter than on the first," Chief Executive Ole Enger told Reuters when asked if such delays would reduce first quarter sales. Italy is major market for the group, he said on the sidelines of a solar energy conference in northern Italy. Enger declined to comment further on REC's financial performance or its outlook ahead of its first quarter results which are due after 0500 GMT on Wednesday. Enger praised French energy major Total's <TOTF.PA> landmark $1.37 billion offer for a majority stake in U.S. solar group SunPower <SPWRA.O> that he said would spur consolidation in the fragmented solar power sector. "I am very happy about this move," he said of Total's bid. "This is very good for the industry. I hope to see more of it in the future... Everybody sees the industry needs some kind of consolidation," Enger said. Shares in REC were down 0.7 percent at 18.39 crowns at 1436 GMT, lagging a steady Oslo bourse <.OSEBX>. (Reporting by Svetlana Kovalyova) (Milan Newsroom +390266129507) Keywords: REC ITALY/ 19:10 02May11 UPDATE 1 Italy solar capacity seen 7,000 MW at end June * Italy added about 2,300 MW solar capacity in 2010 GSE * Uncertainty about new support stalls growth GIFI (Adds details) VERONA, Italy, May 2 (Reuters) Italy's total installed photovoltaic capacity may reach 7,000 megawatts by the end of June due to a rush to sign up for expiring incentives, a senior official at Italy's state energy services agency GSE said. "I think we can arrive at 7,000 megawatts at the end of June," Gerardo Montanino, director of GSE's operating division told Reuters on the sidelines of a photovoltaic conference in northern Italy on Monday.

Under a special decree passed last year, Italy extended generous incentives, which expired at the end of 2010, to about 4,000 MW of capacity reported as installed by the end of last year if it is connected to the grid by the end of June 2011. "Some 200 MW out of these 4,000 MW became operative in December, and I believe that at least another 3,000 MW will be connected by the end of June," Montanino said. He said it was difficult to forecast capacity growth at the end of 2011 because of uncertainty over a new incentive scheme which is yet to be approved by the government. Italy's solar market has boomed since 2007, when the government boosted production incentives, attracting the world's biggest photovoltaic module makers such as China's Suntech Power Holdings Co <STP.N>, Trina <TSL.N>, Yingli Green Energy <YGE.N> and U.S. firm First Solar <FSLR.O>. The government wants to cut the generous support to ease the burden on consumers, who pay for the incentives in power bills. Rome was due to approve a new incentive decree by the end of April but the government is still ironing out its details. [ID:nLDE73R0WV] [ID:nN29138394] Montanino said he hoped Italy's Industry and Environment ministers would sign the decree on Monday or Tuesday. Delays with the much awaited new support plan have forced many sector operators and investors to review their business strategies for Italy and some have started cutting jobs, Valerio Natalizia, chairman of Italy's biggest photovoltaic energy body, GIFI, told Reuters at the conference. "Uncertainty is devastating, every day of delay (with the new decree) creates greater damage to the sector," Natalizia said. Italy was the world's second biggest solar market in terms of new installed photovoltaic capacity that turns sunlight into power in 2010. Italy added about 2,300 MW of photovoltaic capacity in 2010 to reach a total of about 3,400 MW total capacity at the end of last year, according to GSE. (Editing by Anthony Barker) ((svetlana.kovalyova@thomsonreuters.com; +39 02 661 29450; Reuters Messaging: svetlana.kovalyova.thomsonreuters.com@reuters.net)) 22:37 02May11 UPDATE 1 First Solar hopes Italy sales up in 2011 * Italy accounted for 12 13 pct of group sales in 2010 * Long term contracts help to offset uncertainty in Italy * Eyes new markets to make up for possible Italy shortfall (Rewrites first paragraph, adds share action) VERONA, Italy, May 2 (Reuters) First Solar Inc <FSLR.O>, the world's top solar power company by market value, hopes to grow sales in Italy this year despite regulatory uncertainty in that pivotal European market. The world's largest maker of thin film solar modules is among the main suppliers to Italy, which in 2010 was the world's No. 2 market in terms of new installed photovoltaic capacity that turns sunlight into power. "In 2010, we did about 200 megawatt of sales for projects in Italy and we hope to grow this number this year," Brandon Mitchener, the U.S. company's director of

corporate communications for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, told Reuters on the sidelines of a conference on Monday. Italy is the fourth biggest market for First Solar after Germany, the United States and France, with Italian sales accounting for 12 to 13 percent of the group's global sales in 2010, Mitchener said. First Solar Chief Executive Rob Gillette said in February that his company would sell 15 percent to 20 percent of its 2011 module production in Italy this year. [ID:nN24266584] Mitchener said on Monday it was "a bit difficult to make predictions about the future of the Italian market because of what is happening with new incentives." Shares in First Solar closed down 1.5 percent at $137.53 on Monday as uncertainty over the European market persisted. Italy's solar market has boomed since 2007, when the government boosted production incentives, attracting the world's biggest photovoltaic module makers, such as China's Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd <STP.N>, Trina Solar Ltd <TSL.N> and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co Ltd <YGE.N> and U.S. company SunPower Corp <SPWRA.O>. The government wants to cut the support to ease the burden on consumers, who pay for the incentives in power bills. Rome was due to approve a new incentive decree by the end of April, but the government is still ironing out details. [ID:nLDE73R0WV] [ID:nN29138394] Many investors and solar sector operators have said uncertainty about the new support regime has put their future business plans for the country on hold. Mitchener said First Solar was not immune to the Italian problems but was in a better position than many competitors because it has long term contracts with customers who commit themselves to taking large volumes of modules for big size roof top and ground mounted systems. The company has been growing in the U.S. market and is looking at other markets, such as India, Australia and China, to compensate for a possible slowdown of business in Italy and other European countries where incentives are expected to be cut, Mitchener said. "Today, solar in the fastest growing industry in the United States... Our goal for

solar is 10 gigawatts by 2015," said Tom Kimbis, director of policy and research at the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the U.S. industry's trade group. SEIA has set the 10 GW target for three solar technologies: photovoltaic (PV), concentrated solar power (CSP) and solar heating and cooling, with the bulk of growth seen coming from PV and CSP technologies, Kimbis told an international solar conference in northern Italy. A total of about 1 GW of solar capacity of the three technologies was installed in the United States in 2010, with electric systems, including PV which transforms sunlight into electricity, and CSP accounting for about 960 MW, according to the SEIA data. About 1.5 2.0 GW of total solar capacity is expected to be installed this year, with the growth driven by PV technology, Kimbis said. PV systems, which account for the lion's share of U.S. installed capacity, currently stand at 2.1 GW, with over 150,000 systems operating across the country, according to the SEIA. The U.S. market for solar energy rose to $6 billion in 2010 from $3.6 billion in 2009, according to the SEIA. Even while U.S. capacity grew last year, its share of worldwide PV installations slipped to 5 percent from 6.5 percent in 2009 due to booming growth in Germany and Italy, where solar players took advantage of generous government incentives, SEIA said in March. [ID:nN09267594] This year SEIA expects U.S. PV installations to double from 2010, while growth globally slows due to subsidy cuts in Europe. By 2015, the association's projections show the U.S. share of global PV capacity reaching 15 percent, Kimbis said. FUTURE DRIVERS Future growth of solar energy will largely depend on extension of federal tax incentives, improvement of access to financing for small and mid size operators and better access to grid connections, Kimbis said. "Continuous tax incentive policy, financing and grid access those are the three areas that are going to drive the market. If we can get those to work, we will hit the (10 GW) target," Kimbis told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference. Expressing his personal view, Kimbis said French energy major Total's <TOTF.PA> landmark $1.37 billion bid for a majority stake in U.S. solar group SunPower <SPWRA.O> would spur merger activity on the U.S. solar market. "The environment in the United States is getting more and more competitive, and we are going to see more mergers and acquisitions happening," he said echoing comments of many participants of the conference about an impact of Total's offer on the global solar market. "The only reason it has not happened over the past couple of years is because of the crisis on the financial markets," Kimbis said. 17:41 03May11 German solar energy growth to slow this year BSW * New installed PV capacity seen at 5 6 GW in 2011 * Total PV capacity seen rising to 52 70 GW by 2020 * More than 50 pct cut in system prices seen by 2020 VERONA, Italy, May 3 (Reuters) Growth of new photovoltaic capacity in Germany, the world's biggest solar market, is expected to slow in 2011 due to planned cuts in incentives, a senior industry official said on Tuesday. Germany added more than 7 gigawatts (GW) of photovoltaic (PV) capacity, which turns sunlight into power, in a record breaking 2010 to reach a total of about 17 GW, equal to 17 large power plants. "In 2011, approximately 6 GW are expected to be installed," Klaus Bernhard Hofmann, director of German Solar Industry Association (BSW), told an international photovoltaic conference in northern Italy. Depending on the impact of the announced cuts in German solar power subsidies in 2011, the country may install between 5 and 6 GW of new PV capacity this year, Hofmann then told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference. Earlier this year, Germany passed a law cutting solar power subsidies by up to 15 percent from this summer, with the cuts for roof installations starting from July and for ground based cell assemblies from September. [ID:nLDE71N2KG] Future capacity growth will depend on a reform of Germany's renewable energy act in 2012, Hofmann said. "Our forecast for the German market is that... its growth pace will shift to 3 GW to 5 GW (a year) in the long run to 2020," he said. Under Germany's government plan for renewable energy development to 2020, total PV capacity is expected to rise to 52 GW by that year, while BSW projects a more ambitious growth to 70 GW by 2020, Hofmann said. BSW also targets a more than 50 percent cut in PV system prices by 2020 in Germany, among its nine main targets for sector development until 2020, he said.
