4 Approach of the Concept Study Targets of the Concept Study : (i) development of a clear concept for the establishment of a renewable energy loan facility and (ii) analysing the viability of potential renewable energy projects to be financed by that facility. Focus on small hydro power, wind and biomass. The renewable energy programme is targeted to provide financing and technical to private investors in Ukraine. Results of the Study: expected end of October

5 Elements of the Concept Study Updating of the key sector data: analysis of renewable energy potentials, existing plants, costs and risks Review of the Strategy of the Government for the promotion of RE and the privatisation of small-scale hydro power plants Overview of the finance sector (capacities of Ukrainian banks to process RE loans) Preliminary technical-economic analysis of individual renewable energy projects Analysis of GHG mitigation options and use of Flexible Mechanisms Preparation of a concept on institutionalising the facility and its administration within the German-Ukrainian-Fund 5

8 TYPICAL PROJECTS PROJECTS ON UTILISATION OF BIOMASS Private investor/ operator, industrial company with large own energy demand Technical: use of industrial biomass waste (wood, husks, etc.), combustion for steam production, used in industrial processes on site, small steam turbine for power generation, power capacity MW, heat and steam generation according to process demand Economic: investment demand 1-4 M, payback 4-8 years 8
