7 Materiality and integrated management - As Mervyn King pointed out at the IIRC pilot program conference in Madrid: integrated reporting does influence behavior within a company - Preparation of a materiality analysis is one way of accessing the most important financial and extra-financial/ non-financial issues - The IIRC methodology of relevance, importance, prioritization and disclosure is a useful one, but has to be learned, different departments have to get used to it! - It is important to link a company s strategy with its functional strategies! 7

8 Some ideas/ hypotheses - (I) Materiality the better a methodology of a materiality analysis suits the special characteristics of a company, the more accepted are the results of the materiality analysis (depending on size, the stage of the development cycle a company is in, listed/ not listed company, etc.) - (II) Stakeholder Focus the more attention is paid to particular stakeholder groups, the more fruitful a materiality analysis will be for a company - (III) Conciseness the more concise the information that is shown as a result of a materiality assessment, the more this information is used by internal and external stakeholders (independent whether it is a materiality matrix, or not?) 8

12 Fazit und Ausblick Der Wandel der gesellschaftlichen Erwartungen an Unternehmen sowie die zunehmende Komplexität der Unternehmensberichte erfordern eine Neuausrichtung der Unternehmensberichterstattung. Das Konzept einer Integrierten Berichterstattung stellt eine logische Weiterentwicklung der Unternehmensberichterstattung dar und kann die Qualität und Aussagefähigkeit der Unternehmensberichte getreu den Motto Weniger ist Mehr deutlich verbessern. Die verstärkte Aufnahme von nicht-finanziellen Aspekten in die Unternehmenssteuerung erfordert eine Erweiterung der Zielsysteme und die Übernahme in das Performance-Management System. Integrierte Berichterstattung ist eine Innovative Idee und unternehmerische Notwendigkeit. Sie erfordert eine Anpassung der Berichterstattung an externe Rahmenbedingungen und eine ganzheitliche Performance- Orientierung des Unternehmens. 12
