December 2014 Combining a pitch-perfect sound concept with high-end hardware, the sound system in the Tesla Model S offers drivers and passengers alike a unique sound experience. Premium electric car manufacturer Tesla developed the system in collaboration with S1nn GmbH & Co. KG from Stuttgart, which used its very own S1nn Tuning Technology. With the help of CAE (computer-aided engineering) software, the sound specialists from Stuttgart created a sound concept for the Model S in which every seat in the vehicle benefits from acoustics that are perfectly coordinated in line with strictly scientific standards and adapted to human hearing. Around 80 percent of the tuning is based on scientific/mathematical aspects of acoustics, while about 20 percent comes from technical optimizations by experienced audio specialists based on human hearing. Fine tuning of the speakers sound reproduction ensures a natural, clear and dynamic result. What s more, S1nn Volume Management gives the sound system speed-dependent volume and bass control. This is geared to the premium electric car s driving characteristics and takes the fan stage setting into account as well as input variables such as speed and rpm. Impressive hardware The sound system hardware in the Model S will impress even the most discerning music lover. The basic version of the sound system generates 200 watts, with 40-watt speakers (160 mm) incorporated in all four doors and two passive tweeters (30 mm) in the A-pillar. A mid-range speaker (80 mm) located centrally on the dashboard adds a further 40 watts. In the premium version which around 70 percent of Tesla customers opt for after listening to demo systems the sound system has an output of 560 watts. Two tweeters (30 mm) in the A-pillar each deliver up to 20 watts and two mid-range speakers (80 mm) each add a further 40 watts. Two 80-watt woofers (200 mm) are fitted in the front doors and two 40-watt speakers (160 mm) in the rear doors. Three 40-watt mid-range speakers (80 mm) complete the surround sound system. One special feature is the 80-watt bass box. Comparable models have boxes with a volume of eight to twelve liters, but the Tesla Model S has a 25-liter bass box for a particularly impressive depth of sound. The sound aspect is extremely important to Tesla. This is demonstrat-
ed by the fact that the premium automaker strengthened the sheet metal and cladding around the speakers especially for the sound system. This reinforcement gives the system an exceptionally dynamic and distortion-free high-definition sound. AudioWeaver TM used as audio framework The AudioWeaver TM audio framework used by S1nn was particularly beneficial for Tesla. This software made it possible to extend and optimize the audio signal flow until just before the start of production. AudioWeaver TM was also used for real-time tuning and validation by means of regression testing within the system. Last but not least, using AudioWeaver TM made it far easier to update the software during the development process. * * * This press release, complete with images, is available online at www.s1nn.com/news Premium electric car manufacturer Tesla developed the sound system in their Model S sedan in collaboration with S1nn GmbH & Co.
